Think STD may be on his way out, who would fill the position of the current available jockeys

Noel's a very good jockey, but is touching 40 and Nicholls (wisely) looks toward the future with his stable jocks.

I rate Sam, but snapping up one of the younger Irish lads would be a coup.

Nicholls reminds me of Mau Utd when Fergy retired....Skelton And Fry have left him and he has not got a real Superstar....... So he will sack the Jockey as that is the sort of guy i think he is.LaughLaugh

I mean dont even mention Sean Bowen in the same breath as young Sam ffs......At least Noel Fehily is all Class.

I agree think Fehily is class, but one who would fit the bill for me is Townend. Being edged out of
the Mullins operation with all the young Mullins coming thru and Ruby has another few years riding.
Would think the cap fits, I am not saying STD is a bad jock but would prefer Townend myself.

I don't think Nicholls will admit he is wrong over STD. STD is a good jockey but he's more suited to his dad's horses than Nicholls' horses.

Not sure how the ginger would affect his riding unless it frightens the horse
anyway this game is about opinions and would give my vote to Townend.

Victoria Pendleton has more idea than STD and she's just started riding Wink

I'm not sure there is any reason Townend would leave WM. PFN made a big mistake not taking NF but did Noel want the job. Very difficult for a young jock to make it with PFN imo.

who said std is on his way?
By:

could think of 4 ruby, DJ, De and Pw Mullins where would Townend be in that pecking order and
he knows it, thus any leading trainer who would be looking for a top jock could not go far wrong
by giving him an offer. STD in my view is still learning his trade and will improve but Nicholls
needs a top jock ASAP

townend would never leave mullins, and I,d be surprised if nicholls is looking for a new jockey anytime soon?

I must admit the thought also crossed my mind today that Sam will be on his way sooner than later. Apart from Ruby, PN doesn't mind changing jockeys fairly regularly.
By:

To be fair to Nichols he is under fierce pressure as every trainer is from owners, if I was an owner
with Nicholls I would prefer a more seasoned jock like Townend and this puts pressure on him.
Whereas TDavies has the luxury of letting STD cut his teeth so to speak and take the hit. Again STD is a decent jock
learning his trade but not top notch currently.

No need to blame jockey.
The yard is just not quite firing.
These things happen.

top Jocks make it happen whether it is presenting a horse to a fence or having a clock
in your head you need a top jock STD is currently learning his trade

Std is bad..rides horses like he's on a rocking horse...would have thought that p Townsend style would suit but Paul's friendship with std father will give std more time.

Agree with Saxon Farm there - The Nichols yard just seems to be having a quiet spell - and when the horses aint feeling it no jockey good or bad is going to bring them home

sean is better than townsend and sam both poor in a finish and sam hybitually holds horses of the pace even in better class races u cant give good horse tha much ground to make up , when their is cut as well every horse is 6 len behind leaders an nothing left at finish

Horses totally out of form all of a sudden. Ptit Zig or Al Ferof might be different today but I think Wishful Thinking is great value to beat them.

This is getting silly now, Al Ferof isnt even in the yard anymore.Whoops

Sam looked like a panic appointment before someone else got him, thought Fehily would have been the ideal choice at the time and suspect Nicholls now regrets not going for him.

When: 06 Dec 15 08:54
Some rubbish on here. Townend will be Mullins no1 in the next few years so no chance of him moving. As for Willie appointing one of his nephews ahead of Townend? No chance, he is ruthless and he has huge regard for Townend and nepotism will not be a factor there.
By:
Arklearkle
When: 06 Dec 15 19:11
Agree with Bigwill re Townend and WM will will pick whoever he believes to be the best jockey. PT has had a lot of success with the current arrangement and probably wins more grade 1s than nearly all jockeys apart from RW and BG - even more than R Johnson.

When: 06 Dec 15 19:33
The best 3 or 4 jockeys will all retire over the next few years - Walsh, Geraghty, Fehily & Johnson but not overly impressed with many others already touting their trade - one or two exceptions who are conditionals - they might gain rapid promotions

It is amazing how different opinion can be - I can't stick Nichols but I feel Sam T-D is a fine jockey and have no problem with him. Today he got Ptit Zig into the race of sorts but Al Ferof was far too good end of story.

Could probably name 5 other jockeys better than Johnson Geordie, outside of the 4 you've said...... in Ireland alone

Cooper, Townend, Russell, Burke, Carberry. He ain't among the best, even when he wins the title this year. He's completely agricultural.

Gerald the Show Pony
When: 06 Dec 15 20:04
The difference between Johnson and all those named is that rarely will he be accused of never giving his ride every chance.

Townend, Burke and to a lesser extent Carberry avoid criticism for their respective waiting tactics when it goes proverbially t**s up.

If they win a brilliant ride but when they do not then silence.
