SEDGEFIELD has been fined £5,500 by the BHA for failing to ensure screens were erected while a horse was euthanised in October.
The Arena Racing Company-owned track was ordered to pay the amount following a disciplinary inquiry into the way officials dealt with the fatal injury sustained to So Bazaar in a 2m½f novice handicap chase.
The Andrew Wilson-trained eight-year-old suffered a fracture to his right-fore leg and was euthanised by the senior veterinary officer approximately halfway between the third and fourth fences.
However, the screens were not erected as required and although the incident could not be seen from the stands part of the horse’s body was visible on the television coverage.
The panel concluded that there were insufficient personnel present to enable screens to be erected, and while accepting Arc’s admission to breaking the rules and acknowledging procedures have been put in place to avoid a repeat, they took into account it was the third rule breach by Sedgefield in the last 12 months, which they found “an aggravating factor justifying a significant increase above the entry point”.
Last year, many in the racing industry expressed outrage after the Daily Mirror ran front page images, taken behind the screens and supplied by Animal Aid, showing the moment Wigmore Hall was put down after sustaining untreatable injuries at Doncaster.
