31 rides without a winner is fairly staggering when considering the average SP of the horses he wold be riding.

Brought a thread up a few years ago about his lack of acumen and apparent overall intelligence and if ever a ride highlighted the fact again except this time 24months later...it's that.  He's a nice lad which I said at the time but he just lacks what the top jockeys have.

No Pace in the race...seven within 10 lengths round the bend and on a horse which is a brother to one of the stoutest stayers in the country which he rides in the Hennessey no less...he sits miles off them and them and get's after it way too late.

It's Hennessey day, Nicholls has only had Modus go in at 1/2 over the three day festival and the jock has cost him a winner there on an important day....surely he cannot be pleased with.

This in addition to most of his top novice chasers jumping poorly FTO this year with this jock on top of them, no coincidence for me.

I could't fancy Saphir De Rheu any stronger but the lad is a liability in a big race unfortunately and have to adjust stakes accordingly. 

Such a shame as punting good Nicholls horses on big days a key part of my NH season as I suspect it is for many other punters but can no longer do it now for serious sums with him on top of them.

i backed iris also , seemed to come there to win but just   didn't  finish quite as strongly as it looked it would do i think.

Sam is the best Jockey riding over Jumps.....Just watch him in The Hennessy then come back and apologise.

There is only one 1.01 in the Hennessy acey.....If Saphir wins it which he might very well do, it will be in spite of the jockey not because of him.

Sam is a top Jockey , but he was painful to watch there .

didnt give the horse any room to get some momentum going at the crucial time , and hence had just too much to do and lost the race because of it

hes an ok rider i think , like  all jockeys he has his good and bad days, that said I'm surprised  he's riding for nichols.

Plus, i said Ryan Moore was The best Jockey Riding about 5 years ago.

Studious_1 summed him up perfectly. Nice lad but has not got that bit of magic that wins races.Paul will have to look elsewhere or it will cost him many pounds.

On two occasions he put the horse in on totally the wrong stride. It is simply not good enough. Before anyone asks if I could do better, the answer is no. Then again, I doubt STD would be much use as a forensic psychologist.

Young Sam was as cool as a cucumber shame the horse was not quite up to it.

He is just too hit and miss. It appears he has adopted the Ruby Walsh style of letting a horse jump out his hands with minimal assistance. It didn't work there and you really can't afford mistakes like that in competitive races. In the end the horse found very little off the bridle in the straight and possibly didn't get home on that ground. Even on good ground I doubt he is a Gold Cup horse.

Wouldn't blame jockey, 2 mistakes and I don't think it was even the weight that cost him, just don't think he stayed properly.

Does anyone seriously thiunk that Smad Place would have been beaten who ever rode which horse? Saphir was beaten by the trip and the weight but ran really well.

Very nice performance by the winner. Circumstances slightly went against SDR. I understand why they went wide with him but I'm not sure it helped the horses chances of winning on a day when fresh ground was saved for those going up the inside. Even so today was Smad's day and I don't think he'd have been denied except by an exceptional performance.

Horse didn't get home under such a big weight. Sam did well to sit on the horse who made a shocking mistake and remember this is a horse with history regarding jumping.
