Race 4 - 1:55pm THE MASSARELLAS 'MISTER SOFTEE' NOVICES' HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4) (DIV I) The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of SPIFER (IRE), ridden by John Kington and trained by Julia Brooke, which appeared to be tenderly ridden throughout to finish fifth, beaten 22¼ lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer, who confirmed that a post-race examination of SPIFER (IRE) failed to reveal any abnormalities. The rider stated that his instructions were to hold the gelding up and take his time as connections were not sure whether he would stay the trip. He added that the main aim was to try to get SPIFER (IRE) home and jumping well as they didn’t want him to have a bad experience first time over hurdles. The trainer confirmed that these were the instructions, adding that the gelding was an older horse going hurdling for the first time and he had had difficulty learning to jump. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (B)59.2 and the trainer in breach of Rule (C)45.4, in that they were guilty of schooling the horse on the racecourse. They suspended the rider for 14 days as follows: Friday 11 to Tuesday 22; Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 December 2015. They fined the trainer £3,000 and suspended the horse from running in any race for 40 days from Wednesday 2 December 2015 to Sunday 10 January 2016 inclusive.
