Down to the frequency of play Dunc.

If they taking (on average) 3% of every stake of every spin.   If someone is backing £10 a spin and can do 60 spins a minute.

That is 30p per spin = £18  per hour

So if they can get people playing 8 hours a day, not a bad (no risk) return per day.... multipled by 7 days a week x 365 days a year.

This is why they are now open at 8.00am and shut at 10.00pm

roulette 36 numbers and the 0 = 37 you stake a £1 = £37 odds are 36-1 so return will be £36 so 36 divide by 37 = 97.29729% thats the house edge so your loss is 100-97.29729 =2.70271

Difficult to get a straight answer sometimes dunc. It is "real" roulette as opposed to slots type payout.

When you see the machine spinning, it is a pre recorded video you are watching, the machine already knows what number it is going to be before the ball lands.

If the OP thinks it's option A and his mate thinks it's B and so he asks for clarification and it turns out he was right with option A, then how exactly does that make him daft?

I've seen those machines when broken and needing fixing and you see a screen displaying the Windows logo so that would suggest it's computer programmed and not random. Something else to consider is that it has to know what you have bet on in order to also know whether to pay you out or not.

Probably not best to bet on something that can make it's mind up after it has first seen what you have done.

nope. cannot be random if the algorithm has to factor in a house advantage :)

If you have seen this you'll know what I'm talking about, and if you haven't you probably will think I'm typing a lot of rubbish, but there used to be a way of winning on roulette because the programmers left open a "back door" where one number would indicate a narrow range of possible numbers on the next spin, if you hit repeat immediately. This was 6/7 years ago. But the proponent I know said that the machines defeated him in the end, so they must have closed that loophole, at least to him. Google "trigger numbers" for the general idea but don't expect the working model to be available on the internet.

Never played 'em myself - but played real roulette in my younger days.
As dukeofpuke quite rightly says the house edge on "real roulette" is 2.70271 ...and I beleive the FOBT roulette machines are supposed to mimic this house advantage via a programmed algorithm.
As a long time "trader" ...I saw an interesting post on FOBT roulette ...
Bet equal stakes on both Red and Black ...obviously you don't win ...you don't lose - the machine doesn't register the loss only the win ...it thinks you're winning - so it will start to throw up zeros more often.
So you start backing zero ...
Poster says after a couple of wins ...trouser the cash move on to the next shop.
Never tried it ...and if it worked the bookies have probably altered the algorithm ..but thought it worth a mention...

what?  The "house advantage" is in the structure of the game, it doesn't require any deviation from randomness.  (btw I don't know or care how fobts work just stating a fact about roulette)

I agree with dave, no point in fixing owt as the long term profit is built in just like the real game. I suppose some kind of algorithm is required to replace men actually spinning the wheel.

a good point was made earlier, in real roulette the ball can land on any number, in fobt roulette the number is predetermined by a random number generator, not quite the same imo

Machines should have a warning to this effect on them.

"Playing this machine could damage your wealth" should suffice

would love to see that, its a fair 1.01 it wont though
