if you want a holiday/plane read I read BORN TO PUNT STEVE PALMER,A YEAR IN GAMBLING AND GARY WILTSHIRE AUTOBIOGRAPHY on the way to/back usa.
Report wondersobright October 22, 2015 4:23 PM BST
a lot of the books about methods/systems etc are outdated imo but I would strongly recommend reading about randomness in gambling and also the mentality of a gambler
Report paganin October 22, 2015 4:26 PM BST
The sure thing is an interesting read on the life and gambles of Barney Curley.

The Coup by Ken Payne is the best. Barry Brogan story is a great read too but you`ll never bet another horse if you read it.

Books to avoid: Public Enemy and Bird`s biography which are nothing more than bragging journals. The former started out well but after the first couple of chapters it was like reading a book of betting slips.

Always Back Winners by Stewart Simpson is a very good book. Some useful ideas about betting  in handicap sprint races.

Facts?? Sprint races?? Going round bends more like carrying topweights with a finnishing kick?? But yep a good read

A new one just out is Strictly Classified by Marten Julian. Subtitled: insights into the trainer's mind.

I'm a couple of chapters in and so far it is interesting rather than useful; observations on horses from a good many trainers and jockeys on raacehorses' character and behaviour. A good stocking filler imo, especially for someone who likes racing but has not spent all his life around horses. On the downside, so far the book lacks organisation and surely an editor would have picked up some duplications.

"The Man Behind The Shades"

a great book about a remarkable gambler.

If you can ignore the rather sycophantic writing style, then Horsetrader is the finest racing book of all. A sensational read.

"Days Like These: The Education of a Racing Lover" by Jamie Reid is superb. Mixes gambling tales, genuine love of the sport and a poignant reflection on the sacrifices his parents made only realised in adulthood.

Sorry Dickie, my mistake. You're absolutely correct he shunned  5 and 6f - and focussed on races between 7f and 12f.
Top weights ,winning form last time out and ability to quicken at end of a race - at turning ( ie. non galloping ) tracks .

It's me that likes the sprint handicaps !
