E.W. bet(s) Westwood Hoe 14.35 20-1(lads & BF )& Express Himself 15.45 12-1 (lads & Joe), both Haydock.
+ E.W. double with the magic sign 20-1 & 12-1.
Having gone through Haydock's card very early I was drawn to both of the big field handicap's, where I'm prepared to have a small investment in each, with both of their respective place claims Imo better than their current odds (5-1 & 3-1 if your backing E.W.).
In the first of those big handicaps Westwood Hoe has been in my notebook for quite some time, having followed the form of his York win in the early part of the season during May, which at the time threw up plenty of winning form, with the 2nd 3rd 5th & 6th all winning on their next start. Westwood Hoe has subsequently ran twice since that victory, both of which were over the straight mile at Redcar. On the first occasion back in June he was sent off at very prohibitive odds to follow up, but having set a decent enough gallop over a mile he could only take the field to the furlong pole prior to backing out of proceedings, Imo not looking to see things out. He was quickly given a break after that race, and having qualified to run in the final of that series took his chance in the Pinacle Cup, and the different tactics deployed that day not enhancing his chances an awful lot more, keeping on at one pace when going past some beaten horses in those closing stages.
That run will have at least sharpened him up, with connections today dropping him to 6F for the very first time in his career. Looking back at that York run he was drawn widest of all in stall (15), showing some excellent early speed to lie a handy 3rd with less than a furlong gone, and in such a short space of time there was probably 15 lengths first to last, indicating to me he'd done plenty early on to keep tabs on the pacy Dr Red Eye and Celtic Sixpence. On the approach to the 2 pole Westwood Hoe traveled powerfully to the front when sent for home, never ever looking likely to be pegged back by any of his pursuers thereafter. The yard are in no more than average form, but Tony Coyle has booked Ben Curtis for the ride, a jockey who Imo doesn't always come in for the plaudits he deserves, and has a decent strike rate and profit for the yard in the last 12 months or so, 20-1 for Westwood Hoe looks too big given the circumstance.
Just over an hour later It looks for all the world that it's Mitchum Swaggers race to lose, overcoming greeness a plenty to land that handicap Lto over C/D recently, today he will an extremely tough nut to crack under just a standard 6lb penalty. Plenty of runners that take him on look largely exposed, even the likes of recent winner Berttiewhittle may not be as well in as rating suggest, with that recent apprentice race he won rather falling apart up front, with some fairly inexperienced and low key apprentices somewhat setting things up for Rowan Scott to deliver him late on. Express Himself is Imo still in the unexposed category, having looked a steady improver all this season, with his form looking extremely consistent. He was given a small break ahead of his run in the Cambridgeshire, finishing just above halfway in that ultra competitive 0-110 event. Today he is back down to class 3 0-95 company over a mile, with his last 5 contest over this trip producing a form line of 1-3-3-1-2, marks ranging from 80-88. Despite his career high mark today of 93, I'm of the opinion he is still progressing, and Imo should not be a double figured price in this contest despite the claims of the favourite. Ed McMahon looks to have his string in fair form, with plenty of horses running well and winning recently, let's hope Express himself can do just that and continue his excellent Haydock record which stands at 2 from 2, on the latest occasion beating Birdman during that horses rise through the handicapping ranks.

Just in from work and was unable access the replay for 14.35, but did manage to watch the 15.45 in it's entirety...not surprised it was that price in running given the start daveyworcs, but did think to my untrained eye they were going a decent enough gallop for those that needed it, contrary to what Stuart Machin(think it's him) was saying as he commentary.. hope he was not trying to put the in-running boys away.
