Zipper, I certainly remember Ballinska Band, Derby winner, unbeaten in the heats and equalled the record time in the final. White City was almost a local track for me (and the best ever). I loved it there and saw many Derby finals in the 70's and 80's, the only 'true' Derby roar, fantastic atmosphere. The year before BB I was on Mutts Silver ante-post and again in the final at 7/1 (won at 6/1), what a night and my biggest win ever on the dogs. Maybe some of you remember Yellow Printer, a very fast dog.

I remember Yellow Printer very well. Below is an account of his racing days.
Yellow Printer
Considered by many to be the fastest greyhound never to win the English Derby, Yellow Printer was a fawn March 1966 dog by Printer’s Prince out of Yellow Streak. Owned by Sir Robert Adeane and Miss Pauline Wallis, Yellow Printer was a warm favourite for the 1968 Derby by virtue of the brilliant speed he had shown when twice breaking the 525 yard record at White City. However he disappointed his supporters in the first round of the Derby, only just managing to qualify for the second round. There were rumours about his fitness – denied by trainer Johnny Bassett – and that an attempt had been made to stop him by criminal elements. In any event, a police guard was placed on his kennel prior to the second round of the Derby. All to no avail – Yellow Printer was knocked over at the third bend and failed to finish. The Derby was won by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Camira Flash.
Yellow Printer was back to his best in the heats for the 1968 Irish Derby, becoming the first greyhound to smash the 29 second barrier for Shelbourne Park’s 525 yard course. In the final Yellow Printer beat the previous year’s winner, Russian Gun, as well as the great bitch Itsamint, winner of Shelbourne Park’s Easter Cup.
Yellow Printer always showed his best form at White City, and in 1969 he won the Sir Billy Butlin Stakes and the Wood Lane Stakes there, and also Wembley’s Summer Cup. But his luck in the 1969 English Derby was no better than it had been in 1968, as he again failed to get past the second round. The final was won by Sand Star, an Irish raider kenneled with Barbara Tomkins during the course of the Derby competition.
Elected Greyhound of the Year for 1969, Yellow Printer was retired to stud in Ireland, but soon joined his owner, now Mrs Pauline O’Donnell, in America. He proved an influential sire there, and his son, Sandy Printer, was America’s leading sire in 1980.
Johnny Basset described Yellow Printer as ‘the perfect gentleman at all times – an aristocrat of the canine world’.

I remember the name Shamrock Point but that's about all I'm afraid.Yellow Printer's trainer Bassett trained at Clapton which was my regular track in the 60s and 4 derby winners were trained there in 6 years during that period. One of those winners in 1963 was Lucky Boy Boy who was also trained by Bassett.

I looked up Shamrock Point and realised I should have remembered it. Here is a piece I found regarding the dog in the 1975 Derby won by rank outsider Tartan Khan.
Lively Band did not take part, having been disqualified controversially, in the Semi-Final, for fighting. The dog he "fought" into fourth place, Shamrock Point, an ante-post favourite for the competition went on to win the Consolation Final in a time some 56 spots faster than the Final.
So, the Final was a five dog race.
Myrtown, who had been an unplaced finalist the year before, was all the rage ( media fuelled hype ) for the final, even though he'd drawn the "coffin box" of three, until, a day or two before the race when some sustained support came for Sallys Cobbler in Trap 1. A dead railer inside a slow starter it was argued that he was the best drawn dog in the Final. Pineapple Grand, a useful wide seed would need to improve again to win as would Foreign Exchange who had proved to be the "improver" of the competition. Tartan Khan was overlooked by all. He was a stayer who had actually qualified for the final with straight third place runs, all around the 29.60 mark, a time which had been bettered by all four of the others, by some way.
As often happens the expected happened then didn't quite pan out.
Tartan Khan in 2 made light of the "Derby roar", trapped far better than any had thought possible and moved out to hinder Myrtown, who had slept a yard and met trouble going to the bend, in the shape of Foreign Exchange. The rail opened up and Sally's snatched the lead going into the bend and bombed up the back straight. Then, unbelievably this dead-railer moved off and Tartan Khan came up his inside to lead going into the last turn. Stunned race-fans could not believe it as the sure stayer, Tartan Khan, who was recognised as more of a St Leger hope, took the lead and ran on to the line to win by 1 and a quarter lengths. 33/1 had been freely available all week and 25/1 on the night - so sure were the betting public that the dog was a no-hoper.
Tartan Khan went on to win the St Leger that same year then did absolutely nothing of note at stud.

Yes Barry, Camira Flash had been eliminated but reinstated after another dog was disqualified for fighting. This was the 1968 Derby.
SEMI FINALS
Controversy was the order of the day after the semi final exit of Camira Flash. John Donald, a lifelong greyhound racing enthusiast who lived on the White City Estate at the time and felt as if the White City was his second home, rightly questions whether Camira Flash should have been allowed back into the Derby after his fourth place elimination, and whether it had anything to do with his association with Prince Philip. In the second semi final Camira Flash started slowly, along with Withche's Smoke and El Campo. However, the early leader Not Flashing caused crowding at the third bend and, in the opinion of the judges, had fought and caused sufficient mayhem to enable Withche's Smoke to power home on the outside by 2 lengths from El Campo, the 2/1 favourite and trap 6 runner, with Not Flashing in third. Immediately the buzz around the stands was that Not Flashing should be disqualified, but even when this decision had been made there was then a second decision as to whether it should become a 5 dog final or Camira Flash (9/4) be promoted into the final. In a less eventful first semi final the 11/10 unbeaten Shady Parachute was fast away to lead throughout and win by 5 lengths in an impressive 28.62.
THE FINAL
It was not surprising that the unbeaten Shady Parachute, from the 5 box, was made the 4/6 favourite. Winning Hope, previously trounced by Shady in the semi final, was second favourite at 7/2, while the ideally drawn inside runner Shady Begonia went off as third choice at 6/1. What was amazing was that the poorly drawn trap 4 runner, Camira Flash left behind his slow starts of previous rounds and led at the first bend from the well drawn El Campo on the outside. El Campo challenged throughout and was particularly threatening around the final two bends, but Camira was not to be denied and ran on strongly to win by just over a length in 28.89. It was left to Witche's Smoke to claim second spot just a neck in front of El Campo, while the disappointing Shady Parachute could do no better than fourth, a further 3 lengths away.
As a footnote to his victory, Camira Flash earned in excess of £8000 in prize money during his career, and made at least the same amount again in stud fees.

sparrow, good evening .Was John Basett a Perry Barr trainer ?...If he was, I know an owner at the time who told me he lived in a railway carriage due to massive losses' backing his own dogs !
1970 started with a blow for the track, another fire caused extensive damage but this once again failed to hinder the charge of the Perry Barr succes s . The main stand was rebuilt with a new restaurant and bar facilities and the track reopened soon after . Frank Baldwin had taken over from his father Tom who would retire to Wales and with John Bassett, Bertie Gaynor, Paddy McEvoy and Barbara Tompkins being handlers at the track you could see why the Birmingham venue was arguably the strongest provincial track in the country. The list of 1970’s winners is just too long mention so the most notable were the 1975 Scottish Derby winner Dromlara Master and of course the 1975 greyhound of the year called Pineapple Grand trained by Frank Baldwin. This fawn bitch won the Oaks, the Laurels and finished third in the Derby. John Rowe a former trainer at Knowle and Oxford and Racing Manager at Leicester switched t o the hot seat at Perry Barr joining General manager John Moore. John ’ s sons Bob was Racing Manager at rival track Hall Green. Win number twelve came the way of Westpark Mustard over 550 yards at the track on 23 rd April 1974 when she was challenging the w orld record and in 1981 the stadium hosted the trainer’s championship. Amidst all of this success the stadium was bought by Ladbrokes and renamed the Birchfield Ladbroke Stadium, the purchase had arisen after Ladbrokes missed out on securing Romford and Brighton, beaten to it by Corals. As a result they turned their attention to the Midlands and bought Perry Barr. Further investment followed with facilities being updated by the bookmaking giant , £100,000 was spent including new lighti ng . Former GRA director of Racing Arthur Aldridge, now fulfilling the same role for Ladbrokes oversaw the purchase. So all was going swimmingly, Jim Woods, formerly Charlie Boulton’s assistant at Harringay took up the position of Racing Manager in 1982. The racing pattern was Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays and the strong group of attached trainers continued to reap rewards for the stadium. Suddenly rumours surfaced regarding the d esire of Ladbrokes to sell the land to developers, an unsettled Paddy Hancox moved to Hall Green and Bertie Gaynor switched to Coventry signaling a huge problem for Perry Barr. The rumours proved to be true when a sale to developers was agreed and the site sold, the last meeting was held on 14 th April 1984, 56 years and 7 days after it had opened. The site today is the huge ‘One stop shopping centre’ and not a single sign of the old track exists

Do any of you old timers remember a dog called Hopeful Yankee running out of Belle Vue circa 1960? Apparently it held the track record for a time but whether that is urban myth or not I don't know. It was owned by a relation of mine who was supposed to have been quite a good judge when it came to picking them out.

Thanks for the reads guys, interesting and brings back so many memories of White City.
Sparrow I was there for Tartan Khans Derby, but not on the winner unfortunately, although my mate was. A fiver at 25's, winning 125, a few bob in those days. He rarely went dog racing and backed the 2 outsiders (always the case isn't it). I thought I was on the winner during the race when Sallys Cobbler took the lead, he had the race won, but for whatever reason, came off the rails which was a shock as he used to scrape the paint off them normally.
I never went to Clapton, but probably did most of the other London tracks. White City and Wembley were my 'locals'. Good days. I went over to Wimbledon for the final in 2010, not a patch on WC, horrible place.

I recall that Balliniska Band was owned by Raffaele Bacci who ownded Salford Van Hire and had lots of good dogs in Manchester.
Shamrock Point was a very distinctive white and black dog - very rare at that time when it seemed as though the majority of the dogs were brindled. I think that they were both trained by Ger McKenna.
Finals night was great fun - we used to take a picnic and sit above the first bend and get steadily pi55ed, occasionally fighting our way into the betting ring to get on.
There were six trainers at White City - Adam Jackson, Joe Pickering, Colin West, Randy Singleton, Tommy Foster, and David Kinchett. Supposedly, you weren't supposed to have dogs with more than one trainer but one owner had dogs with all six under different names. My mate's view was that he used to get six sets of lousy tips instead of just one like the rest of us.
My wife and I still talk about the old days - the huge gambles that never quite came off, the American Bar, the characters (Stan Bowles, Jimmy the One, Don Shanks and his Miss World girlfriend etc..), walking the dogs at Northaw on a Sunday - our baby son was once cuddled by 2 Miss Worlds one after the other in the bar there.
Oh yes. the tote deductions were lower too - 5% on the win pool....
