I thought he had 'found god' - or something similar - and given the game up years ago.

Last sighted wandering along a beach in Cornwall - according to several reliable reports.

Bookies arent what they used be.
long gone are the days of fearless bookies taking on the public, particularly the bookies who were being bankrolled by other people.

Barry the shops dont need horse racing  or dog racing   like in the 1970  today  most of the money comes from fobs  and football ...   you should know that
re course bookies they are ruled by the machine   ok you can have say  200 on at 9/4  only if they can lay off on the machine at 11/4....other wise the bet is knock back ...sad but true

Thou shalt not win, is betting’s implacable commandment, carried down from high mountains by representatives of the bookmaking industry. What, after all, do you intend to do about it?

MC wrote that in Odds On magazine over 20 years ago!

THE NORTH WEST HAD THE BEST TWO FLAPPING TRACKS IN THE COUNTRY,NUMBER ONE WAS CHESTER WITH BOLTON A CLOSE SECOND,EVEN IN THE LATE SEVENTIES YOU COULD GET MORE ON AT EITHER OF THESE TRACKS THAN YOU CAN AT BELLE VUE NOW,MAURICE WAS A FEARLESS LAYER,THE GUYS HE HAD WORKING THE IMI WERE TERRIFIED OF HIM(PUFFING BILLY & WILLIS,BOTH NOW DEARLY DEPARTED, RIP),AS FOR MR SHARPLES HE WAS A FEARLESS PUNTER AND A SHREWD TRAINER OF GREYHOUNDS,PAT WHEELAN STOOD NUMBER 1 AT BOLTON AS WELL AS THE IMMI AT PARK ROAD ST HELENS(ANOTHER VERY STRONG RING),GREAT DAYS WITH REAL BOOKMAKERS WHO WOULD LAY AND STAND GREYHOUNDS FOR CHUNKS,AND UNLIKE TODAYS BLUFFERS YOU DIDNT NEED A MACHINE GUN TO GET A BET!
