I would love to know if any of the people who backed the horse down to a very short price at Redcar were laying it today.
That was just ridiculous, finished well behind the ones that had shown zero ability and the horse that fell out of the stalls and was tailed off early.
This has to be investigated.
And before any smartarses accuse me of pocket talk, I had no wager in that race (or the previous one I mentioned above)

Fav and 2nd Fav - Both well-backed.

Although, that could merely be confirmation that they knew that Smooth Operator was going to be beaten 86 lengths -

- as the Fav looked a 'one-paced wonder' - if ever there was one - on previous 'efforts'.

There's no doubt the form of that race today isn't up to much. Dizoard is no good and wasn't beaten all that far. Obviously it wasn't a strong race the horse ran in Redcar either but what was so different today that he is laid at all rates instead of being heavily supported like last time.
Report sageform July 7, 2015 4:56 PM BST
Hope that Tropicana Bay wins. I have resisted favs today and ended up with 2 quite good priced winners in Nameitwhatyoulike and Talawat but can't oppose this one.
Report sageform July 7, 2015 5:00 PM BST
Cured me of backing favs. for another week or two. Outsider of the whole bunch won.
Report barstool July 7, 2015 5:02 PM BST
Add Ivors Involvement to your list, drifted in the market, put out the back early and stayed there and never in with a chance.
Report Barton Bank July 7, 2015 5:08 PM BST
Don't think that drift was of the same magnitude, but I take the point about the ride. That said it is often dropped out.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves July 7, 2015 5:14 PM BST
Ivor's Involvement is owned by a bookmaker. If they're not heavily backed, such horses often get pushed way out in the betting, as layers assume they must not be fancied.
Report Barton Bank July 7, 2015 5:25 PM BST
A horse drifting a couple of points in a handicap from 5s to 7s or so doesn't really set the alarm off for me. 5/4 to 5/2 in a listed race or 9/4 ish to over 5/1 about one of the form horses in a maiden definitely does.
Report Captain Christy July 7, 2015 5:30 PM BST
It may not be people laying it but just not backing it..
Report Barton Bank July 7, 2015 5:33 PM BST
Which one? Ivor's Invovlement? Quite likely. Smooth Operator on the other hand was clearly aggressively laid.

Race 5 - 4:10pm THE FARMER COPLEYS MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 5)

No Stewards Enquiry.

Kevin Stott, the rider of PERCHE, unplaced, reported that the colt reared as the stalls opened.

The representative of James Fanshawe the trainer of SMOOTH OPERATOR, unplaced, reported that the colt had a breathing problem.
Report Barton Bank July 7, 2015 5:48 PM BST
Maybe it did. But did the people laying the arse off it know?
Didn't have a breathing problem when it was heavily backed the time before, then?

Report bettinghelp July 7, 2015 5:52 PM BST
The unasked/unanswered* question is when did they find out it had a breathing problem?

I didn't back Temptress. I had doubts about the quick turnaround from Royal Ascot and whether the usual tactics applied would suit as well round Ponty. Wouldn't have had the balls to lay it at 3.65 mind. You would have had to know for sure they wouldn't show a bit of nouse and change the tactics to do that, wouldn't you?
Report ribero1 July 7, 2015 6:18 PM BST
Wasn't there money for Ivors Involvement this morning? It looked a very weak race to me and I was going to keep it on my side,as it turned out I didn't have an option and its fairly soul destroying when about the only horse you think can beat the front 2 in the betting and the market tells you it can't win.
I agree the drift on Temptress was alarming and duly ran accordingly.

I almost added that one myself. Heavily backed last time and the subject of a nasty late drift tonight. Different ground would be a possible reason for people wanting to oppose the horse but it would be a brave man laying it at 10-1 in a dire race like that one.
As you say, it's finished last.

Somebody (confidently - greedily) SWIPED EVERYTHING up to 17.5 - as soon as they were 'Off'.

Despite it taking up a good position in 3rd - same as it's last race.

So obvious.

BB , there are some smart people out there , that put money into the markets like bait , testing the waters and bet accordingly

it's not always connections laying .
Report Barton Bank July 7, 2015 8:28 PM BST
If the layers of the horses on this thread are formbook judges not acting on inside info then they are truly incredibly clever. Am not saying it is connections, but I would be pretty dam sure it was people acting on information outside of the public domain.

did anyone see the mcmanus horse in ireland with barry on in the 2 mile hurdle?

was 6.2    on here. but i noticed in the A v B market its was 2nd fav behind a horse that was  9.0/8.8    on here. within seconds the Drift started, was like the A v B market was indicating the score. Yes it was at back and pulled up.
Report Barton Bank July 7, 2015 8:43 PM BST
Lets see how Bella gets on here, a winner 2 starts earlier off only 3lb lower and started 5/2 last time out. Gone out to 32 from about a third of that price having been foreceast 5/1 2nd fav.

Report Barton Bank July 7, 2015 8:52 PM BST
Or it would have been if it had finished anyway.
Fair play to the very shrewd judges who worked out that a performance of that calibre was in the offing from a represntative of a top yard in a £3k mares race. Round of applause.
Report Barton Bank July 8, 2015 3:10 PM BST
Secret Palace a prime example 3.10 Lingfield here. Heavily backed only previous start, no price too big for the layers today.
Report onlooker July 8, 2015 3:21 PM BST
To be realistic - Barton

Secret Palace is not a horse that OTHER Punters would have been piling into -
- given that it finished last of 7 on it's debut, that being it's only previous race -
- and the (stable) money last time must have been an anticipatory guess - probably based on a bit of 3 furlong home work.
Report Barton Bank July 8, 2015 3:24 PM BST
Perhaps it was a bad example. You would have had to be very brave to lay it at 40-1 but in fairness it has run a race there. Unlike all the ones we highlighted yesterday.
It is possibly more helpful just to look at horses with form in the book on reflection.
Report Sergeant Cecil July 8, 2015 4:26 PM BST
Sirheed looks one for the list.  Ran well last time at 11/4, good time figure, top yard, good claimer on, well drawn.  13/2 forecast, 25/1 on here and never going.
