The interview with Lydia is very worrying. He's so out of touch with reality. He thinks everyone can still get a bet with the off course bookies. It's only going to get worse for punters with him in charge.

come across pretty well in general, i'd say...truth is prob 90% of betting shop customers can get on ok (cos they are not regular winners)..he was being honest in saying bookies are running a business and it's always going to be hard for professional backers to get on (rightly or wrongly)
Report adamski June 17, 2015 12:52 PM BST
Spot on asparagus, Lydia's good at those sort of interviews but very unimpressed with Rust.

Anyone who thinks the current situation with betting is satisfactory and it's only pros or proven winners who can't get on is living in cloud cuckoo land.

Why is it also totally unacceptable to wait a further 12 months for an AW track in the north rather than rip up Newcastle's turf track?

He's a bookies man and likes ARC Sad

Duncan, it's not just about professional backers. Most of my friends are severely restricted with most bookies. They are recreational punters who probably in the long term make a small profit at best. Certainly not enough to make a living. Bookies do not really want to take bets on racing from anyone apart from losers but the people in charge of racing continue to bow down to these bookmakers.
Rust is going to be no different. His comments about the A/W track at Newcastle and the future of racing were also extremely concerning
Report Dr Gonzo June 17, 2015 1:12 PM BST
Rust will turn out to be everything that any sensible racing fan already knew he would when he was appointed.

It is, sadly, so predictable.

Rust was spot on when he said "if people want to get on they should stop backing 7/2 shots e/w"

It's all 'bunkum' from Nick Rust, of course he is aware of punter restrictions.  Just like his predecessors, he is towing the line...

The bookmaking industry have their man exactly where they want him - just as they do in Greyhound Racing, where former bookmaker henchmen now run an industry that has been all but annexed by the Big Three.

And while worthless, side salaried media flunkies, and moderates like Duncan, hope against hope that long standing bookmaker executives do actually turn from Poachers into Game Keepers, the bookmaking industry will continue to erode this industry's autonomy, until they control its every aspect, from top to bottom.

They don't play by the same rules that the we do - greed, and above all control, are the ONLY things that matter to the bookmaking industry - certainly not the long term health of British Racing.
Report Magic__Daps June 17, 2015 1:53 PM BST
Millhouse - spot on as usual imo.

So he is saying that anyone can have a chunk at 7/2 if they want win only?? No, thought not...

Rust will no doubt be enjoying some ARC hospitality in a box at Ascot as we speak....................

When I see bookies' reps being interviewed they remind me of bankers. Smug, greedy wonkers that know that they will

eventually control racing. A curse on them.

Agree with Duncan, thought he came across well. Good questions well answered imo.

Your talking rubbish
Ive never bet a 7/2 shot E/W in my life
I rarely bet  anything under 12/1 E/W
I don't follow tipsters, but am restricted with
all supposed big firms
Report duncan idaho June 17, 2015 2:20 PM BST
asparagus, i didnt say it was only professional backers who are restricted...i said 90% probably arent...the other 10% would obviously include (but not be limited to) prof backers.

Who gave him the mandate that we want more racing, more owners and more horses?

Duncan, for someone as smart as you clearly are, that's either totally deluded or unbelievably naïve.

Where did you hear that, in a bookmaker hospitality box..?

The bookmaking industry and ARC.

what are you disagreeing with, millhouse?
Report cricket June 17, 2015 4:58 PM BST
More low standard racing, more unpredictable, more bookies like it. Guess whatever you like the big bookies run racing not the BHA.
Report nerium June 17, 2015 9:07 PM BST
Don't listen to what they say, look at what they do. When the Tote is sold to a
bookmaker, and a bookmaker is put in charge of the BHA you know all you need to know.
Report Barton Bank June 17, 2015 10:05 PM BST
If he thinks we are going to get more owners he is deluded.
The only way we will have more racing is to continue down the route of putting on as much low grade rubbish (that punters/racegoers) don't want as possible and hope that people continue to keep rank bad horses in training. The alternative is smaller and smaller field sizes.
Report millhouse June 17, 2015 10:05 PM BST

Duncan - '90% probably aren't'.

This is total nonsense, but it's exactly the sort of thing the bookmaker PR frauds are telling their media helper monkeys over a Moet or two in their hospitality boxes this week, probably with the use of the word 'arbers' a couple of times, for a bit of punctuation...
Report duncan idaho June 18, 2015 10:34 AM BST
dont think it's nonsense at all...for every one serious punter who studies form or whatever and comes on here, there are at least 10 who hang around bookies all day doing their rent money or roll in from work of a night and have a bet in front of the footy purely for 'an interest'...you telling me all the betting shop tramps and the armchait guessers are all getting knocked back aswell, even though they're serial losers?

ps i've never been in a bookies hospitality tent in my life but you carry on with your paranoia
Report barry dennis June 18, 2015 11:55 AM BST
Think on balance Duncan is right, the £5,£10,£20 punters have no problem early prices, bot the prof/arber screamers are soon knocked back
