Capitalism is in large part based on turning resources into $$$$ and as such is eating the Planet alive...and people keep voting for it cos they want to be 'aspirational'. Good old human nature.

Whichever system we choose, we must leave our footprint on the planet. I don't think that socialism (in comparison to capitalism) sets out to conserve resources.

Are you assuming that they would have immediately banned the import of all  oil and petroleum products, except for diesel for buses and trains - and abolished the private car, and made everybody travel everywhere by public transport.

They could, or would, have banned the import of coal - and closed down several Power Stations - thus going back to us all having to live by candlelight.

Although I was never an admirer of Mrs T - She did, at least, fulfill your dream by closing down the coal mines.
