then complain business is bad.

just seem to think they can turn up, win money go home.

surely they must do their homework, if they want to win.

just take a bet, lay off on here I guess.

Did seem strange, to not put any work or effort into his business then to complain that profits were not as good as they used to be.

I'm afraid what you say is correct in a lot of instances.Turn up,not a clue about the horses & are quite happy to get a few quid.I often wonder if they do their accounts properly.Fair enough I'm very selective as to where I work & consequently my expenses/meetings are quite high. However I've found that if I do not clear about £10,000 a year after raceday expenses I've made nothing so I've got to try & find value on a card.
Today for example it was a very late decision due to the weather forecast that I sent the young uns to Hexham.Probably turned out to be the worst weather of the four they could have gone to.So when the son came in with the paper I only had a few minutes to have a quick look at them.Following my quick look I picked three out,one a lay & two to side with. The lay was Master Of The Hall which was backed in from 7/2 into 5/2 co fav.so that was no good. However the two to side with Gin Cobbler & Cool Star both won so just that five mins showed a profit. It isn't rocket science, someday you get it right someday you get it wrong but it's having the balls to go with your decisions that counts.Stand them for nowt you'll get nowt & if you don't get out you'll go skint in the long run.

Back in the 1970s it dawned on me that not all bookies were interested in racing.
I put a bet on Sir Wimborne.  The bookie "corrected" me and called the bet to his assistant as Sir Wishbone.

Sorry,I don't know who the bookie was.
Probably no help, but he was probably in his mid sixties and had driven down from Birmingham.

I put 4 hrs into the card at sandown y'day my nap was basem 8/1 into 9/2 which won; leaned up with it and backed it' sadly it was my only winning race y'day.the difference y'day was ryan moore [again]grand inquisitor and master of speed I don't think piggot would have got either over the line in front he just seems to smash them home. another train crash for me y'day . may been a v bad month and barring Epsom has continued into june .

Don't even know the name of a horse running when I start, rely solely on faces. Thing that amuses(annoys) me yesterday sandown, most punters had a very good day lots of well backed winners, queues of punters waiting to draw last race all chatting to each other explaining how clever they were , it's these occasions they all ask, "you had a good barry" they never ask when 6 outsiders have won, my normal reply"yes I won on every race "

barry, agree totally will use that line in future.[won on every race when 6 out of 7 have hit the back of the net]. I don't know geof banks like you do barry but would suggest he is a bit marmite .however never understand when the guy comes on here and gives his opinion[and he isnot faceless]and certain dicks tear him to shreads he clearly states he does not hedge and hedging is for gardeners which I admire.in 2014 I hedged 0.34% of my turnover which I suppose makes me a part time gardener.i never had a back bet y'day all day [sadly] I bet at the dogs for 26yrs and can never remember betting one back. for instance betting on 50 plus greyhound races a wk I wud b put in the river at least 15 times a week with no possible of getting out of it so why should I bother now.ps the reason I am posting on here so early is I have been up all night giving myself a right talking to after y'day.

Flash, good luck to you, you seem to be a very fair bookie as is Mr Dennis. I was accosted recently by a rails layer of some standing who described me taking on the SP system and the SP sample system as being a 'turncoat'

Of course that same trader forgets he bets win only at any time the favourite is odds on and 1/5th the odds wherever he can ie 16-21 runner handicaps - is always 'in' the sample- and his policies mirrored by so many of his colleagues it's impossible to build an accurate SP. You simply CANNOT have a system based on 1/5 the odds or win only, transmitted via the mechanism to an industry offering 1/4 the odds and each way (check betfair each way prices- often worse than track bookies)

So yes, as an off and on course layer - i am highlighting what I see as clearly wrong about the system and I make no bones about it. If you ask why I bother, it's because- right or wrong, I want to see fair and even play and I abhor trading

Of course I recognise many of my colleagues who trade are very fair and likeable businessmen who are only doing what they have to to survive. But that doesn't change the fact such policies cannot be mirrored by the off track market- nor are they customer facing

Electronic boards - for example are not 'customer facing' - we've become the tote

as for responding to the odd OIK on here? Well I mind little of what they say and doesn;t bother me to call those who post anonymously what they would never say face to face - they lack any appreciable back bone

think theres some romantic storys going on here theres no way any bookie worth a light [ unless he owns the horse, or has inside info] is going to stand a horse thats been hammered on the machine all morning or hide from a horse thats drifted like a barge just because you,ve formed an opinion with a 30 min look at the papers ,absolute shoite

Well said poster ..... just go to any course in the country and watch them run for cover - I go racing regularly and never see a book go against the machine - it rules the roost and makes walking along the line a waste of time really - gone are the days when they had to use a tissue and go on their own opinions - I don't blame them as the machine has the best opinion of all, unless, as you say, some inside knowledge is at hand ....

PERSONALLY I THINK GEOFF MAKES A FEW GOOD POINTS,THE TROUBLE IS THEY ARE FEW INDEED.AS FOR THE MORNING LINE I THINK WITHOUT HIM THE PROGRAMME WOULD BE UN WATCHABLE NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS THE GUY HAS AN OPINION,AGREE WITH HIM OR NOT(I MOSTLY DISAGREE) YOU HAVE TO RESPECT SOMEONE WHO ISNT A FENCE SITTER LIKE THE REST,ALTHOUGH GEOFFS EMPLOYMENT WITH CHANNEL 4 PROBABLY HAS A CLAUSE RELATING TO THE FACT THAT HE CANT STATE THE GLARINGLY OBVIOUS REGARDING THE BLUFFERS THAT COME ON THE SHOW SAYING THEY HAVE LAID THIS AND LAID THAT WHEN IN REALITY THEY WOULDNT LAY TWO BANANAS TO ONE.AS FOR MY ELECTRONIC BOARD I CAN ASSURE GEOFF THAT IT ALWAYS FACES TO THE CUSTOMERS AND ALWAYS DISPLAYS TRADITIONAL PLACE TERMS EVERY RACELove

I've read some tall stories on this forum and never said a word......but on this occasion MR T you've run into one.
My ledger book is littered with the letters ED in the ticket number box Yarmouth dogs Dec 07- March 08 when you had the good sense to depart for the penultimate time to date (apart from the derby meetings and Mr Hoy doin his nuts one night in July i wish i'd joined you then) Regards and hoping you and family in good health

markyacard long time no see no hear from u glad you are keeping well.pretty certain the bets I had with you wouldhave been personal that I fancied or either when I thought you had made a rick .and as for mr hoy I would never hedge any of his bets for the sole reason when he backed something it would then be halved in price and  he was the undoubtest biggest punter there at the time and if he won or lost it was just a night out to him so basically it was a case of just putting both thumbs up me arris and hope.i did have a punt for myself many many times name me bookie that doesn't.rightly or wrongly if u have done your tissue and make something 6/4 and its 7/2 what are u going to to do regards edt

You're a true gent ed, glad to hear u keeping well. And yes many times I'd have made the Rick that forces you into having a bet.
Those days long since gone never to return even if the old man had one in the Derby final itself I doubt I'd bother to put another penny into Franklin's coffers by paying admission

markyourcard sadly the franklins are a one way street and by all reports they always were even going back to the 50's.the biggest problem at y'mouth for 20 yrs is mr greedy greenhill would never b happy until he got it all and ultimately that is what he achieved.and miller has no spine nor greenhill and wudn't make a stand against the management so I was a lone voice sadly.however as u and I both know what is left there aint worth worrying bout so let them grovel in their own p***.lastly I was always passionate about the greyhounds and they gave me great times and great memories and also owned several plus retired ones' but greyhound racing in the true sense with the real characters and punters sadly petered out I believe nationaly from maybe the mid 90's .only in my humble opinion.
