In what looks a wide open staying handicap, if there's one horse with the potential to show marked improvement, then it's the Mark Prescott 4 yr old DEAUVILLE DANCER.
Brought along in typical steady fashion by his shrewd trainer, he completed a hatrick at Thirsk last season off a mark of 80, with the promise of more to come this time around. At first glance, his 2 runs so far this season would appear disappointing, but excuses can be made for both. At Bath, he wouldn't have been suited by the small field and steady pace, and was simply done for toe close home. At Newcastle last time it was a similar story: although there were 11 runners, it was run at a steady pace, and although travelling well on the inside tracking the leaders turning for home, Luke Morris found himself boxed in when they quickened, took a pull hoping to switch out wide, but had to wait for a gap, by which time the leaders had gone. When eventually seeing daylight he wasn't given a hard time and was allowed to coast home in a never nearer 7th.
It should be a different story today, with a few who like to race prominenty ( Chilberta, Fitzwilly, Albert Bridge, Laughing Jack ), and hopefully this will be run at a decent pace.
I'd have been happy to back Deauville Dancer at 4/1, and so the 6/1 on offer looks more than generous to me, and I've helped myself to plenty of it.
If getting the race run to suit he can take this comfortably en-route to a crack at the Northumberland Pate in 3 weeks time.
