I'm at the furlong marker wearing a white shirt. I had all my pocket money on at evens, 40 quid. The teachers all knew I would be at Epsom so didn't need an absence note the next day

crikey! 40 quid was a lot of pocket money back then! (and still is now!)

The bloob, I ran the book at school for everything, worked for my Dad as a carpenter in the school holidays and was the runner for him and his mates who owned horse and dogs when I was at Dulwich College from aged 10 onwards. I was walking greyhounds when I was 5!

it was my 2nd derby but still the one I remember most unusual for a flat horse but shergar was applauded during the parade and on the way down to the start.

If you were caught fighting at school.......U could settle it in the Gym (overseen by teacher) lunch time................Id run a book on that

I was standing in the head on stand which made him look even further clear than he was - only downside on the day was the bet I placed on Shergar winning the arc with some of my winnings.

I was sitting my French O level but the bloke behind me was listening on a transistor radio. "Shergar by 10 lengths" was very audible even to the teachers at the front of the exam.

I remember doing the equivalent of A level economics and one of my mates leaving early to have a bet on the Royal Hunt Cup-naturally it lost.
About 2 years later same guy had a factory job while I was a struggling student -every Saturday he would appear at the bookies where we congregated and do a fiver Union Jack and a pound Yankee on 4 complete outsiders on the grounds that it would come up eventually....

Wasn't at the Derby but was at Ascot for Shergar winning the King George and saw HM The Queen close up too. Can't remember any other race on the card which is unusual for me. Still have my programme from the day though.

Got up with my Dad at some ridiculous hour and drove up from S.Wales and straight back after the race.

You must have different eyesight to everybody else.

Looking at something Head On - most especially a horse race -  surely shortens  the perspective of distance.

Quite right onlooker my mistake - fact was he was so far clear it was hard to believe

"2nd fav,"  - was Shotgun - at 7/1 - ridden by Lester Piggott - finished 4th

"Harwood's horse," - was Kalaglow - 3rd fav, at 11/1 - hampered coming down the hill - finished out of first ten.

Mange I never had fights at school, nobody would take me on but I wasn't like that anyway, after rugby matches I was too battered and bruised to even tie up mt shoelaces the next day My 2 older brothers were both top amateur boxers but I was far too heavy as a teenager to box and didn't have the correct mindset for that game, I liked being a hooker and loved my rugby.

Western Dancer was the horse trained by Con Horgan, the dinosaurs on here will remember him. He also was a joint owner of Northern Sky trained by Pat Hughes and ridden bu Frank Berry. Second in the Galway Plate, got done by Pinch Hitter ridden by Jonjo after the last.

Western Dancer won the Ebor I had read in the Weekender that he was fancied and it was one of those were you tell people about it and keep meaning to back it, then on the day my mum had £1 on it and I never put a penny on, it was 20-1

I remember the gym above the Half Moon, can't remember the name of it but it had an Italian name. Was it Mancini's? I used to play guitar most weeks in the Half Moon, lot of the lads would pop in from upstairs.
