Took a couple big losses today in terms of daily profit but in reality are tiny blips in the big picture which got me thinking about how i clearly expected too much too soon from bf back in the day

i had some bad p&l's in the first 2-3 years when couldnt control emotions and stake sizes, chased losses etc and went from around +£10k into £1k overdraft before before picking up any real steam, learned the hard way how to have a correct mindset and approach to sports trading. looking back it could've ended badly!

Post a few words about your darkest days here

also do you think recreational punters chase losses? i remember going into a b3tFr£d with a couple mates and the clowns were shocked at me laying down £50 on an EVS single, whilst they placed their £5 mug accas on some YES/NO selections on the footy, i couldnt imagine them ever staking enough to do any damage to their banks, they both had FT jobs

no shame in being down as a recreational punter if you can admit it

Discipline is all
Bank covering at least potential 50 consec losers essential.
Level stake single bets only
Have a system that reduces bets to a certain type of race.
Keep records of all bets religiously

In my very early days doing this (01/02) I set myself making £75 per day.
Often it would be alot more and in the first couple of months was doing really well, working hard long hours but going well.
It was around this time of the year and the night racing was starting I had had a bad day the first one I remember and had lost about £300, i chased that night and my losses ended up being about a grand.

I sat there in shock and I actually cried for about 2 mins.
I have had losing days since then............many but I have never chased like that again and although my discipline is not 100% 100% of the time its one of my strengths i think now.........so yep a grand for me thats my worst day

interesting, i remember staring at the screen in shock once i realised i lost a months £ in like 3 races.
went outside, was the first time i ever took a walk without any direction or purpose, funnily enough its turned into something i do every now and then to stay stress free

99% of gamblers lose...
99% of gamblers chase...
the 1% have a clear edge or have found a niche...

thats about it.

Anyone mention any fun in their punting?

Fook me, its a hobby for me and i love it. I win and i lose. All this "keep records of bets religiously" bowlarks can be fooked right off.....what a load of nonsense.

If i nick a few bob then great, if i lose so be it but feckin hell try to enjoy the game lads, who the fook wants a room full of binders proving a £100 bet you lost in 1996, while it was 19:30pm and you had had a crab linguine for dinner!

I couldn't give 2 sheets personally....you punt and sometimes you get it right.

Half of the blokes on here give it all the "i keep records" yet they'll play in fivers....POINTLESS imo.

Rant over .......BE LUCKY Wink

I was thinking exactly the same Ban but I couldn't be bothered to type it all.

I've never had a betting bank, it comes out of my regular account whenever I need it.

And before the forum "pro's" pipe up, yes I am a losing punter, the difference being though is if I never win another bet it won't make that much difference to my life. I bet for fun and not for ruin.
Report roida May 9, 2015 7:17 PM BST

gamble what you can afford to lose..nee big deal issit.
Report s.kenbo May 9, 2015 7:20 PM BST
I get as much enjoyment out of a £5 winning bet as I do a £100 winning bet.

It's no fun gambling when you're betting more than you're comfortable to lose.

Have never seen the point of telling porkies on here.....would anyone care less if i had a fiver on a 6/1 poke or £400 on a 6/1 poke.....it doesn't affect others in the slightest so the giving of the Billy big balls gets lost on me.

I very rarely post a bet for that exact reason....you win, you lose.

That's the game...imo.

I am what you may  call a recreational punter more for entertainment ,of course I would love to say I win most of the time but as with most others I lose much more but I don't bet big  and as its for fun no harm done !
Report Swardean May 9, 2015 7:41 PM BST
Anyone who has gambled has had their dark days, its all relative.  If your on the dole and do £200 on a saturday, you are in a worse situation than a footballer blowing £100k.   Who has the biggest balls the guy betting his only £100 or the guy backing £1000, with thousands more in the bank.

go into any bookies and ask the punters inside if they are winning or losing ..............most will say they are breaking even ,which we all know means they are doing there bollax !

Over the years have not had many real highs on here because winning days tend to to be just a steady build a bit like
going to work. The highs and lows have been when ive lost disipline and chased or when ive just been bloody minded and really took one on. Think i have had about half a dozen nightmares over the years, jack the giant winning at Ascot, dettori
in the last on fujiami crest, norton collonge falling in Ireland, osric winning a novice hurdle and A P when he won the national.

Lost 2500 one day and won 14000 one day. Biggest winning and losing days for me. About 10 years ago when I bet up to a grand on a horse though.
Keep records of every single bet, spend about an hour a day recording my results and an hour a day backing about 15 horses a day.
Roi of approx 7% last year. Average bet approx £125. Mostly level stakes. Discipline is about 75% of what I would like it to be.
Serious bets are horses only, fun bets are on the golf and a double or treble on the footy at the weekends.

Hard work, stressful trying to get the bets on but pays more than my full time job so well worth it.
Beats losing 5-10 k a year that's for certain.
Report Eeternaloptimist May 9, 2015 10:35 PM BST
Was mentally collecting my winnings on that King George horse Barton Bank about 20 years ago after I'd stuck a grand on at about 3-1 and it was coming to the last 10 clear. That hurt even more than Garrison Savannah getting chinned in the national having previously won the gold cup because I couldn't see Barton being beat. Then there's the time I ran around with my credit and debit cards borrowing as much money as I could after I saw Alderbrook win the Kingwell and told my mates it couldn't get beat in the champion hurdle. Boy did we dine like kings that night.

But in the grand scheme of things what does it matter?

We're betting men and we live or die with our boots on and telling the tales good and bad is all part of the fun long after we'd have spent the winnings.

I also remember being in a chinese in Cheltenham absolutely pi55ed up the night before the Stayers one year having the craic with some Irish lads. They were all telling me Le Coudray was going to cocck his leg after the last and leave em for dead. My mates who always used to follow me in if I really fancied one waited with bated breath as I laughed in their faces and told them that if there was any juice in the ground that Anzum would beat him. We all met in the same chinese the night after English and Irish and drank the place dry. Laugh

Thinking about it from a personal viewpoint irrespective of the money which comes and goes my two saddest days racing were Valiramix for obvious reasons which I backed like a hero and Well Chief which for the Triumph I simply couldn't have it beaten. I've never cried after a race in my life but after Well Chief for an hour I just stood there and couldn't speak after he got done on the line. Many people walked up to me in that time took one look and just walked away. Laugh

The Valiramix fall was a jaw dropping moment with a tragic ending. About to firmly cement himself into the history books. I wrote a piece on it. Will have to dig it out at some point.

A friend was berated by his mothe in law cause he rarely gives his son meat as both him and his wife are vegetarian. She seemed to think meat in a diet was healthier.

I've lost more bets than I've won. Worst recently was Annie power crashing the lucky 15.
