Ever since the abandonment of the old time-served apprenticeships, the skill levels of UK tradesmen has nose dived. Nowadays you are considered a 'qualified' craftsman/woman after a couple of years on day release at your local College, and time spent fetching and carrying and making brews for an employer.
Why do you think there are so many craftsmen in huge demand who should really now be enjoying a hard earned retirement (sadly they were never allowed to award themselves 'bankers bonuses' whilst working 7 days a week in all sorts of weather conditions just to make ends meet).
... and of course employers prefer to ignore any social obligation to train a British workforce, instead relying upon an influx of Eastern Europeans, leaving massive youth unemployment and the social problems that entails as they start their adult lives without hope.
It might have helped had we had a political party prepared to take on Big Business, and also actually for once listen to the demands of the working class and also young people in shaping the country in which we live. Instead we have multiple instances of the same political classes making decisions that best serve the interests of themselves and their buddies.
That isn't about to change, which is why the UK becomes a far worse place to remain as each year goes by, and why many of those who can afford to leave.
