In May 2014 Arena Racing Company ("ARC") announced plans to improve the racing surface at Great Yarmouth by levelling the home straight.

This work has been successfully carried out over the winter and it is currently proposed that racing will recommence on Thursday 23 July. This is a month later than initially proposed due to the new turf cover needing some additional growing time in order to be safe for racing. The additional month will allow the sward to thicken providing a suitable cushion for racing, while the roots develop further for sustained growth and post racing recovery. Local trainers will be invited to bring horses to work on the track ahead of the first race meeting in order to establish that the track is fair and safe.

Jim Allen, ARC Racing Director, said: "We are committed to ensuring each of our racecourses provides the best possible conditions for horses to race on, be that a synthetic racing surface or turf. We are excited about recommencing racing at Great Yarmouth, however we can only do so when we are confident that the racing surface is absolutely safe for horses and jockeys. We appreciate horsemen's and racegoers' patience in this situation and will keep everyone updated as necessary."

Glenn Tubby, Great Yarmouth Executive Director, said: "The team at Great Yarmouth will be in contact with those people who had already booked to attend one of the four fixtures now being transferred, as well as our much valued sponsors and Annual Members.

"We are very much open for business, continuing to host a number of non-racing events every week, and look forward to racing returning to the track in July. Our popular Ladies' Night will now be on Thursday 13 August and our Ladies' Day remains on Thursday 17 September as part of the three-day Eastern Festival race meeting."

Visited the track this morning and I was very encouraged as to the rate of grass growth since I last visited on April 23rd 2015!

Did the Germans bomb Yarmouth in the war?

If not, why not?
Report TheNorfolkMafia May 9, 2015 11:05 AM BST
Great Yarmouth was heavily bombed during the war. It was bombed more than any
other coastal town in the country.

Great Yarmouth was an obvious target for attack by German bombers. It was an
important port with a large fishing fleet and major industries. It was also open to
attack. Great Yarmouth lay on the east coast within easy reach of enemy
aeroplanes. It was hard to detect raiders as they came across the sea.

217 townspeople were killed in air raids between 1940 and 1944.

The bombing destroyed a total of 237 properties. 1598 other properties
were so badly damaged that they had to be demolished.

Much of the damage occurred in a large area of narrow alleyways called the Rows.
Great Yarmouth people had lived in the Rows for hundreds of years and most of the
town’s population still lived in the tightly-packed lanes. The Rows were extremely
vulnerable to attack by incendiary bombs because fire could spread so easily.

My Grandad (who died before I was born) was one of the 217 townspeople who were killed in air raids between 1940 and 1944.

So, thanks for your post and always remember, be careful what you wish for!
