Did the Germans bomb Yarmouth in the war?
If not, why not? |

Great Yarmouth was heavily bombed during the war. It was bombed more than any
other coastal town in the country. Great Yarmouth was an obvious target for attack by German bombers. It was an important port with a large fishing fleet and major industries. It was also open to attack. Great Yarmouth lay on the east coast within easy reach of enemy aeroplanes. It was hard to detect raiders as they came across the sea. 217 townspeople were killed in air raids between 1940 and 1944. The bombing destroyed a total of 237 properties. 1598 other properties were so badly damaged that they had to be demolished. Much of the damage occurred in a large area of narrow alleyways called the Rows. Great Yarmouth people had lived in the Rows for hundreds of years and most of the town’s population still lived in the tightly-packed lanes. The Rows were extremely vulnerable to attack by incendiary bombs because fire could spread so easily. My Grandad (who died before I was born) was one of the 217 townspeople who were killed in air raids between 1940 and 1944. So, thanks for your post and always remember, be careful what you wish for! |
