Would appear to be an above average crop this year.
American Pharoh was explosive in the Arkansas, Dortmund is a pure monster who should be joint fav for me, Firing Line oozed class last time at Sunland, Carpe Diem is an out and out Giants Causeway...then you got the likes of International Star and the Florida Derby winner Materialiality.
Splendid line up.
settled on Frosted for Godolphin, Keiran McLaughlin and Joel Rosario.
A lot was expected him this year but first run in the Fountain of Youth went from stunning to total disaster in a matter of strides...was absolutely cantering all over the likes of Upstart, kick clear turning for home but just stopped...
McLaughlin took him away, had him checked out, gave him the Paul Nicholls special (wind op) and boom....back on the Derby trail.
Ever since that he's been brilliant in his work outs and scored a fine win in the Wood Memorial last time out...picking up nicely from behind off a slow pace to score easily.
Been great since....think he ticks a lot of boxes.
breeding - check distance - check Class - check Speed - check...his figures are up ther with Dortmund and AP Jockey - check won the KD on Orb versatility - check will be able to adapt quickly to whatever happens tonight.
Like this fella vs the hot pots....16/1 eachway 4places will do for me.
The Kentucky humorist, Irvin S. Cobb, from Paducah, said it best, “Until you go to Kentucky and with your eyes behold the Derby, you ain’t never been nowhere and you ain’t never seen nothin’.”

I put a score on the Pharoah a week or two back at 9/2. Not getting excited though. I know virtually nothing about US racing and it does look a very competitive race.

hard to oppose ap after following his build up, carpe diem i also like but stick with dortmund and a couple of bigger prices to box up in fc & tris

american pharaoh has been hyped, but the hype could well be right
the horse is always forwardly placed in his races, and as he is drawn wide he has to go forward, if the speed is not too harsh then he could get a could trip

jonjon, mike de kock deserves a big race international winner, feels like nobody apart from south africa and dubai really knows about him, he is top quality in my opinion

Agree Dortmund looked the part last time i seen him but would worry he might have peaked and what he has really beat , not sure about Frosted ,interesting and could have the scope but may need well need further ,i have backed Mubtaahij and think the race will be run to suit but he could easily be destroyed by American Pharoah ,who looks a typical big flat track bully who should be too good for the other ftb,s ,Carp Diem and Dortmund ,maybe Mubtaahij will get a tow into the race by then and go on and stuff the Pharoah late on , but American Pharoah looks a worthy fav and the one to beat imo .
but i have been wrong before ....once ......or thrice or so
no kentucky derby thread is complete without this . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv8x9x5A49s .

One of the most competitive Derbys in a long time. I looked at replays of the latest starts of Carpe,
Frosted,Pharoah,Dortmund and International. They all raced at 10 furlongs and all ran fast times.
The odd thing is that I felt I was watching the same horse in each race, although Dortmund is a monster
of a horse.
Then there's the unbeaten Pletcher runner Materiality and the unknown quantity of Mubtaahij.
I've settled on Carpe,Dort.and Material.
Yes ,pharoah can win but I see no value in his price given the wide draw and the fact that there's a lot
of genuine speed inside of him.Frosted comes from mid pack which could also see him wide but he's a much
better price and versatile,so I wouldn't put anyone off betting him.
Trip is going to be crucial.

I fancy Frosted too. Did well to win from his position LTO. Will get a much stronger pace to aim at here - will be moving up steadily from the back and could easily get there.
American Pharoah could be a monster though.

i have looked at a lot of you tube etc and i have a feeling Mr.Z will run into a place at huge odds or even cause a huge upset, beaten by a fair few of these but i think the peak is tonight. International Star a NR, as is Stanford, Tale of Verse and El Kabeir
had a saver on OP Godolphin beast

Made an abolutely mockery of the field in the G2 UAE Derby. The problem with this horse is that he has never even come close to chasing Derby-like early fractions. He'll be 15 lengths behind after two furlongs if he goes the pace he's been used to. He's taking a step into the unknown here.

Frosting closing too late, had they gone a second quicker at halfway, he'd have gone extremely close. Pace was average to slow.

The first time I went racing in America to the Preakness in 1981 I was totally shocked by the whip use in every race. The Aussies were at one time as bad.

Quote from an America racing friend. I was a bit more concerned with Gary Stevens sending Firing Line too early. He started the move right at the turn into the top of the stretch. He should have started deep to mid-stretch. I don't see a Triple Crown here. The winner had all he could do get the lead, lose it and regain it for the win at 1 1/4 miles. The Preakness is 1 3/16 and could set up nicely for Firing Line. Materiality will probably not blow the start there as he did here and having to pass 11 horses in the final quarter.

I firmly believe American pharoah will win the Preakness, Espinoza had him far too wide and made a stupid run around the final bend, the horse has too much speed and will likely not get home in the Belmont
The one thing America needs to do is reduce the maximum field to like 15, them gates are not even lined up straight at the beginning, low draws have so much advantage it I untrue, Dortmund and firing line were drawn 8 and 10, late finishing frosted drawn 15
