The opposite to another ongoing thread on this forum I am pleased to confirm that honesty is alive within the oncourse betting ring. On the 1st race at southwell today my colleague incorrectly paid a customer the full win & place part of a £10ew bet on robero, placed 3rd. Instead of paying £50 the cust was incorrectly given £260. A couple of minutes later the cust returned to the joint advising us of the overpayment & returning the £210. Neither me or my colleague were aware of our error & would have been none the wiser had the cust not been honest. Id like to think the southwell punter is a decent example of most oncourse punters.
I have to say I find the vast majority of punters on course to be honest. If we make a mistake and start to pay a punter too much they usually say at the time. The only time this wouldn't be true is after amended results. After betting on track for 46 years only once has a punter brought the money back after an amended result. We told him to keep it for his goodwill and honesty and thanked him very much.

it doesn't happen much nowadays but bookmakers used to often get caught out by late objections or stewards enquiries. I remember one in particular at towcester about 15 years ago when an objection was announced by the clerk of the scales, after all were paid out after the obvious disqualification five of the six punters who had been paid came back and returned the money. the one that didn't was insignificant as only a little over a fiver. there always has been and always should be an air of honesty between punter and racecourse bookmakers who are mostly honourable people I'm pleased to hear it still exists today

An on course bookie overpaid me some years back and I returned the money to him. He was flabbergasted. I suppose he was surprised that he had made a mistake in the first instance.

Are you sure that was not Huntingdon adge ? I think a horse called Hogmanay was involved though I am not sure. I know of one book that ended up paying out twice which leads me to ask how many books pay out without waiting for the 'weighed in' announcement ?

on the other hand ....and this one must be 25 years ago or more at Pontefract a bookmaker had laid a winner 550 to 200 which in those day was a very big bet . the bookmaker got the money carefully counted and ready in the bottom corner of the hod. the bookmaker sent the clerk to get the coffees while he took a deep breath and the tic tac took the book for the payout. up walked a punter with a ticket and the tic tac said seven fifty and the lucky chap was paid out ..a couple of minutes later another punter came with his ticket and the tictac said seven hundred and fifty. the bookmaker went white. the first winning bet was 7.50p needless to say the tic tac was never allowed near the book again...and the lucky punter was probably out of the car park by then

I wasn't there that day demo. However I bet on the 1991 Whitbread whilst at Market Rasen and had just finished paying out on Cahervillahow when punters started arriving to draw off Docklands Express. Reversed the placings as the first had intimidated the second

I've been paid out on dogs that the race has subsequently been declared void and it always went back to the books. Not for big amounts, a couple of hundred that type of thing. You have to have honour in the gambling world, my good name is worth a lot more than a bottle!

Best system I could ever remember was to go to Huntingdon and have a hunt around for Mrs Miles Valentine. If she was there her horses won. If she wasn't, they didn't.

Can relate to Slippy and rest of thread in roundabout way re this subjest - always remember being at Sedgefield on Champion Hurdle day 1997 when Make A Stand p1ssed the race - anyway just before /in between races a guy in front of me in queue placed a £400 bet on a dog at Brough Park-as it was called then (massive bet back then for dogs but lass behind counter never flinched)- in a hcp race only for dog to fall out of the traps -beaten straight away he chucked the ticket away and walked off to watch champion hurdle on the big screen whilst i scratted about to pick his ticket up - why? cos i had a gut feeling the dogs trap had opened late -sure enough it had and race was called void . Anyway to cut a long story short i hunted him down and told him what had happened (he was oblivious at time) and was rewarded wiv half the returns -namely £200 Jobsagudun and served me well eva since

democrat • March 25, 2015 10:53 PM GMT Ok - wonder if anybody can remember the Hogmanay race at Huntingdon - at least twenty years ago ?
29th November 1988!

Richard Rowe weighed in a stone (6.35 kg) light!
I was clerking for A.J.H (God rest his soul) in the Silver Ring at Huntingdon!
A geezer had a 150/50 and Andrew had paid him out literally seconds before the announcement that, "An objection has been lodged by The Clerk of the Scales"!
With this, the geezer took off across the field towards the car park with A.J.H (I was going to say, 'in hot pursuit')!
Anyhow, the geezer was getting further and further away and A.J.H gave up the chase!
He came trudging back and I said, "Come on Andrew, there's people here waiting to have a bet"!
I think I got sacked shortly after!

Anyone remember Turner and Kendrick? I returned a £20 overpayment at Worcester many moons ago.
Gus (I think was his name) was delighted; always gave me a price that was disappearing thereafter.

We have to stay for 15 mins after the last race we took bets on has finished. If a punter comes to collect after that there is a procedure in place with the betting ring manager for the punter to get their money.

Many years ago I had £20 on an 11/2 winner in the last race at Newcastle. When I went to collect my money the bookmaker had left. Another bookmaker told me to send the winning ticket to the NBPA in Leeds which I did. A cheque was received within two weeks.
I kept a photocopy of the ticket, I'll have a look see if I can find it.

Going back a few (many!) years me and a pal were at Wimbledon Dogs. Our pin stuck in Trap 2 and we both toddled off with our crisp £20 notes in hand to have a bet. Both had £20 on the said Trap 2 with two different books standing next to each other.
Trap 2 obliged and we went to pick up. I got paid but my mates bet had been written down as trap 1. He had a discussion with the chap and said that we had had the same bet. The guy confirmed the bet with my guy and paid him out......
Obviously had us down as mug punters and we ended up giving it all back but would have to praise his integrity

you would be surprised how many lose their ticket between placing a bet and collecting after a race. if the punter handles himself correctly we pay smaller amounts [ up to £50 ] immediately with no ticket. larger bets go through a claim procedure and have to wait 28 days before getting a cheque.

We had a punter come to us at Southwell on Tuesday and we had overstaked his winning bet by accident - he kindly told us and we paid him the correct amount plus a bonus - there are honest punters about.

I've only lost a 'winning' ticket once. It was on Harry Wragg's Nationwide in the Chester Cup in the 70's. Sea Pigeon won it, and Nationwide came 3rd. I had a tenner E/W. I went to the bookie (centre of the track), and he told me to come back after the following race, and if it hadn't been claimed, he'd pay me. I went back, as told, and he showed me the ledger to show that the bet had been claimed. I was convinced he was a liar, but just swallowed it because I was so annoyed with myself for losing the ticket. At another Chester meeting not long after, I got overpaid a tenner (different bookie), and kept it - I felt at the time it was natural justice - it wasn't really, as it was a different guy - I've felt guilty ever since!
Another time I went through 3 days of the Ebor meeting and didn't have winner until race 6 of day 3 - I felt so relieved, I took a few minutes to sit in the stands and enjoy the sunshine before going to collect my winnings. When I went down, the bookie had effed off to the dogs (there was a race 7 to come), I got my money by post though, as advised. I was p1ssed off for a few minutes though. I did win on race 7 too though, and ended the meeting all square. Willie Carson had the last 2 at 9s and 10s - Ulterior Motive and one for Jimmy Fitz.

ged,Regarding your 11.07 post.Any reputable bookie would,nt have paid out on that bet without resolving the dispute with yourself first, and showing you the ledger without retaining the ticket to prove it suggests you were cheated.

yes , mmm must agree with you there [ now that's rare in itself ] . the clerk should have shown you the two halves of the ticket and the ledger entry. actually , I was a bookmaker working in the centre of the course at chester that day . I hope it wasn't me !!

Dave Richardson weighed me in £250 too much at Catford one night, I said to him, are you mad? He thought I was after more, he was very happy, and always gave me best price after, one night at Wimbledon, Derby final night many years ago a drunk Irishman had an even monkey a winner, I put my bet on and went, about an hour later I saw him slumped in a chair, I said well done mate, lovely punt, he was clueless as to what had happened, I managed to get him out to Tony Morris, where he found the ticked screwed up in his pocket, I sat him down again and about 15 minutes after his son found us, worried he had got lost, I told him what happened, he insisted on giving me a ton, I was not interested, he wouldn't take no for an answer, said I could have taken the ticket and got the lot, Royal Ascot, Mr Dinos Gold Cup, I had £300 at 10/3, walked away, 5 mins later, looked at my ticket, it said £30 at 10-3, went back though thought I had no chance, bookie said, yep, I remember and changed the ticket, fair play

One story that I've just remembered from many years ago, on the cheapside at Wimbledon I had £100/20 with Sid Hooper, after he paid me out the race was declared void as the judge decided the hare was too short, Wally Harrison was calling evens in running the hare! So the race duly declared void and I gave Sid back the £120. After about 5 minutes I went back and said, "Oi Sid, I've given you my stake back as well." Him and his clerk started laughing and said "we were wondering when the penny would drop." They would have given it back anyway, they just had a chortle at my expense.

I regularly get overpaid at my local bookies for some reason, but I always tell them. I'm quick enough to point out when I'm underpaid so things work both ways imo.

Got overpaid by a couple of hundred by the late Pat Whelan at Sedgefield one afternoon. Handed it back and he loudly announced, "You sir, are a GENTLEMAN."
Walked away feeling pleased with myself and looking forward to the good day that must surely follow.
Ended up about 2 grand down and barely able to find the cab fare back to Darlington station.

on the other side of the coin i was once underpaid 140 quid one time at huntingdon a few years back, it was 2 others people money aswell as own i put on, it was over 3 grand payout, when i paid everyone out back in the bar, i realised it was short and I went back, the bookie told me he would get the ring inspector involved to check his money, and asked me to return after the last race, i went back the bookie told me the ring inspector had checked his money and it was spot on, basically leaving me to except the situation, there was never any evidence of a ring inspector being invoved to me.
