Update since June
A quiet summer for Andrew in terms of rides and chances. Only one placing (3rd) in 20 or so rides, in July, August and Sept. Utmost Zeal went close at Cartmel before fading, in July. He rides Utmost Zeal today, along with another at Newton Abbot and another couple of rides in the next two days. Pretty sure 996 is correct |

Today was the epitome of scraping the barrel. One ride at Southwell on a 400/1 poke, a 36 flat rated 4yo filly out of a sprinting mare, trying 3 miles over fixed brush hurdles. Jockey more likely to get injured than ever win a race on her.

I wish the likes of Mullins, Nicholls or Henderson would put him up on some of their horses - the ones that have stones in hand to compensate for having the wardrobe in the saddle - so that he could get the "1000 winner" monkey off his back once and for all and retire immediately afterwards. It's not pretty watching someone who makes the Duke of Albuquerque look accomplished in the saddle and who, at his current strike rate, will take another year or two to reach his target.

JOCKEY Andrew Thornton is facing a spell on the sidelines after fracturing his left collarbone in a fall at Towcester on Wednesday. Just four away from reaching the notable milestone of 1,000 career winners, the 43-year-old suffered the injury when the Lawney Hill-trained Utmost Zeal fell at the fourth fence in the 2m novice chase. "All things considered I'm not too bad," said the Gold Cup-winning rider. "I feel a bit soft really as it's only a collarbone but I got a good kicking as well so I'm a bit battered and bruised." He added: "They took me to Northampton hospital but I was out last night and stayed with my valet." Despite the injury, Thornton will be back on a racecourse on Thursday, working for At The Races as Hereford reopens for business. He said: "There's no point moping around; you don't get much sympathy in our game. Once upon a time you'd be back in ten days but it's 22 years since I last broke a collarbone and there's protocol now. "I think it's probably three weeks but all being well I'm going to go and see my collarbone expert Michael Foy and take it from there." Thornton said at this stage he is unsure if surgery will be required but vowed to be back to chase his 1,000th winner. He said: "As soon as I hit the ground I was thinking 'what am i going to be missing?' and I think that tells you everything." |

In other news, veteran rider Andrew Thornton, four short of 1,000 career winners, hopes to be back in the saddle at the end of the month after breaking his left collarbone at Towcester last week.
The Ripon rider said: “It’s the first time I’ve broken the left one and it hurts. The right one came out completely 22 years ago after several falls.” All healed and back today with a decent ride at Plumpton 4 to go |
