Seems a decent egg whenever he's on the telly but he couldnt ride my sons rocking horse.
his ride on kingscliff when the reins broke would say otherwise |
|
By:
Well its taken him 11 months of the season to ride 28 winners, so on that average he will have reached his milestone by Christmas, and enjoy his xmas dinner and bottle of bubbly to celebrate his 1,000 winners........

Andrew Thornton has been a good jockey particularly over fences where his skills at getting a horse jumping have always been excellent. He's never been very good in a finish and of course is very weak compared to many. However a race is run over at least 2 miles not just after the last so let's wish him well in all his efforts to get to 1000 and then enjoy a good retirement. Additionally, unlike some his integrity seems pretty faultless.

I have always rated and liked A Thornton and he is one of those jockeys who has done me lots of good when I needed it ie Cool Dawn

His 1000 winners will, when he gets there, be a fine achievement; in its way as admirable as McCoy's probably never to be surpassed record.
I for one hope I can be there when he gets it and that it happens at one of "my" tracks. |
|
By:
I think he would be an ideal recruit to the media. His eloquence and literacy puts the shower on ATR to shame.
|
|
By:
parispike, I hope you can be there for his 1000th winner too.
I went to Wetherby for Peter Nivens 1000th winner, you're right, it's a fine achievement. |

By:
There's rather too much summer racing at Sedgefield, close to where Andrew lives I think?
I hope it's not there! Stratford or Worcester would be ideal Andy! |
|

should have retired earlier and jumped on the atr gravy train
all aboard.......... |

I think he broke his arm on Head Spin at Fontwell on 9th June.

LONG-SERVING jump jockey Andrew Thornton has been forced to put his quest to ride 1,000 winners on hold
after breaking his left arm in a fall on Tuesday. He was seeking to move on to 985 victories, in a career which began in the early-1990s, when he suffered the injury as Head Spin came down two out in a 3m1½f handicap chase at Fontwell. “I could feel that something wasn't quite right,” Thornton, 42, said on Wednesday. “When you have had as many fractures as I have had you know when something is not as it should be. “I have fractured my left arm. The surgeon Mr Foy is going to have a look at the x-rays for me and decide if anything else needs to be done or whether it is just left to nature. “They have said I will be off for about eight weeks but that is part and parcel of our job. And it will freshen me up in my quest for another 16 winners.” |

Andrew Thornton returns at Market Rasen as he chases landmark 1,000th success
Friday 25 September 2015 Andrew Thornton Andrew Thornton returns to action after three months on the sidelines with one ride at Market Rasen on Saturday as he resumes his quest to reach 1,000 winners in his career. The veteran jump jockey partners Fleet Dawn for John Wainwright in the Racing FX Electronic Payments Handicap Hurdle over an extended two and a quarter miles. Thornton, 42, revealed his arm was slow to heal at first following his fall at Fontwell in June, but he is now raring to go. "The fractured arm just wouldn't heal for the first two months and the second X-ray was no better than the first when I originally did it," he told At The Races. "The last six weeks I've been to Jack Berry House and used the exogen machine they have there which has helped it on enormously. "I've just been getting fit and ready for the return. "Getting to 1,000 winners is a personal thing. I'd love to chalk them off. I've got another 18 to go. "I'm just looking forward to getting back. The season's getting going now. "I've got Fleet Dawn for John Wainwright. He won the time before last at Worcester and he was third last time out. I've ridden him before. He's got plenty of ability and goes very well fresh." |
