I tend to agree with this and am surprised not more on here have mentioned it! I do think he always thought he would get up. He only drew the whip with about 150 yards to go and the horse flew. A bit complacent.

His demeanour prior to races often tells you things.
Although dismounted he was happy enough to talk to stall handlers.
That means his mind wasn't about winning.
Silence means a lot with this jockey.
