Speaking With Forked Tongues by Mick McDermott is an amusing and revealing insight into the modern bookmaking industry. This A5, 92 page, paperback book is available to buy online from Amazon by clicking the link above.
This book takes a look at the relationship between the major bookmakers and their customers and suggests with ample evidence that the major layers only want to deal with those who lose money.
A prime concern is the almost universal silence maintained by the racing press and those responsible for the T.V. coverage of horse racing when the issue of bookmakers and account closure is tentatively aired by any voice in the wilderness. When those responsible for the good image of racing clamour for transparency and the elimination of all forms of malpractice which damage the image of the sport this does not appear to extend to bookmakers and their apparent desire to have only losers on their books.
The author suggests some reasons as to why this situation may exist, whilst providing evidence of account closure and other restrictions upon winning clients. In effect bookmakers want to eliminate all those who win money whilst everyone else, including the Gambling Commission looks on in either ignorance or complicity and says nothing.
This revealing book is not only informative but highly amusing. It pours scorn and contempt upon the bookmaking industry and asks the central question why no one, save the author himself, appears remotely interested in this state of affairs.
