For a moment there I warmed to him. He has suggested that benefit claimants could be made to pick up litter after six months - and he's perfectly right of course. Bloody layabouts, that will teach them not to actively seek work, although I'm pleased to say that I wouldn't have to encounter them as my part of London is immaculate.
The Guardian also reports that they have encountered a video where Farage is in full support of a privatised NHS which is completely at odds with his current manifesto claiming to be fully behind a state health service.
So in summary, he's clearly not to be trusted and sadly I'm certain there'll be plenty of bigots blindly following him - but he does have the occasional good idea in him.
I in no way support UKIP but I think there is a strong argument for some sort of work to be done for the long term unemployed.
It would call it "Community Development", it would just be 4 hours per day (5 days) a week and would involve, clearing up community areas, tidy elderly peoples gardens and properties, removing graffiti, assisting at feedbacks or charity shops, etc.
It is not the work they do, it is just to get them in the mindset of getting up each day and contributing. 4 hours still gives plenty of time for job seeking and application.
I really believe that if I had not worked for 6 months, I would be going crazy and would welcome the activities and camaraderie of working with others... but perhaps that is just me.

Farage is reiterating tory policies of the 1980s;in those days they had a YOPS scheme whereby the unemployed youth carried out community projects such as picking up litter and weeding the church graveyard. This sort of work benefits everyone and only God knows why it was ever disbanded. I'm looking forward to Farage's next announcement which i expect will bring back the 'short sharp shock' treatment for young criminals.Clearly Ukip and Scottish Nationalists will be the biggest minority parties at Westminster next May which i expect will end up with a tory/Ukip coalition.

There are thousands of long term dole merchants who have no intention to even look for a job,let alone start one. Unless there is a confirmed medical condition as to why they can't work, their benefits should be removed, after being given 3 months notice that it would be happening

Maybe after picking the litter up the long term unemployed should be made to march through the streets so people can jeer and throw things at them.
I'm sure johnny can lobby his MP friend to get the ball rolling.

There have always been people in society who don't want to work and as long as they are not living in luxury I have no problem with them receiving basic benefits to get by leaving more jobs for people who wish to work.

I don't know why they don't offer more pressing encouragement to find work. 6 months free dole money, so they can have a nice easy time watching Jezza on the box and hanging out with mates on street corners... happy times, then after the 6 months is up they will get an arbitrary free 25 lashes in the stocks by a worker picked at random through a national lottery type draw. Then they would be allowed another 3 months of free money and once again at deadline day they would be entitled to 50 free lashes. I would have no objections what so ever, some may even enjoy the free perks.

# So the people of this Country that pick up litter for a full time job are overworked..
The likes of you that describe people that want the unemployed to work are facist morons..
The worst thing that ever happened in this country was the Social Media..
I would limit access to it to those that were in work and paid the necessary NI..

Miliband should be put in Broadmoor. Balls, Cooper and the rest to. Farage talks the talk as did Clegg before the last election. That's when all the promises they knew they couldn't keep came back to haunt them. They talk bolx. Country is on the way back now. Ask the rest of Europe. Why? Reality is the Tories are streets ahead of the others. Thirteen years of an incompetent bunch of clowns headed by Blair and Brown. What makes you Labour voters think idiotic Miliband can do better? Oh yes, you have always voted Labour, your parents, grandparents............... ..... zzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Please don't bother replying if you are going to start talking about the Tories only bothering about the rich. That old chestnut has done the rounds too often and is utter bull****. Good night all. I have to get some sleep now as I have to work tomorrow. I must remember to rev my car engine when driving through the predominantly Labour voter occupied estate on my way to work. They need waking up to watch Jeremy Kyle. Then again ,they will probably still be asleep when I am doing my return journey!!!

Back to the original point.... Why is it unacceptable to expect someone on long term unemployment (who is more than capable of work), to contribute 20 hours of their time a week to their community in exchange for their benefits?
I am not sure who loses in this situation?

That's surely the point Deano, people were more self reliant fifty years ago !
The fact we bring in migrant labour to do ''menial'' jobs because we have a percentage of the population who, with government cart blanche consciously ''play the system'' is utterly ridiculous !
But, I'm also for the ''living wage'' & affordable rents, which should imvho be capped !

People on benefits think it is their right to receive. In cases where someone has worked and contributed, then that is certainly their right. Others who treat the system with contempt and constantly bleat about their plight should be made to work in one way or another. If that means cleaning up graffiti or picking up litter then so be it. Truth is, they WANT to be kept! Nobody will convince me otherwise! They even refer to their handouts as "Wages!" Vote for a Labour government and you will certainly have those lazy bstds cheering and whooping with delight. The UK has clawed its way back from the brink. Don't allow yourselves to be duped with the promise of great times for all under Miliband and his tribe of clowns. They will undoubtedly wreck any chance we have of a continued climb out of the abyss. To all prospective Labour voters I ask one thing. Convince me in any way that a Labour vote is anything other than an ante TORY vote! Tell me what Ed and his band of imbeciles will do for the UK that will benefit anyone in the long run. I might suggest you have more chance of forecasting next years Cheltenham Festival results in full!

Yes Roy, that's what we should be discussing on this forum.
You are entitled to your opinion on the political front, I'm sure there will be many agree with you and similarly many will disagree with you. When I vote in May I certainly won't be reviewing the Betfair racing forum to help me decide where to put my cross.

Yes Posy and EVILROYSLADE, whilst we are on a roll, benefits should not be paid in cash but a voucher than can be exchanged for a weekly food parcel at any supermarket.
It will only contain healthy food (no turkey twislers) and stop them spvcking their cash up the wall. If they want to eat McDonalds, etc they will need to get a job.
Another incentive to get them off benefits and also solves the obesity crisis as well

Vote Labour, in another 5 years you will get this regurgitated note
The former chief secretary to the Treasury, Liam Byrne, has reignited criticism of Labour's stewardship of the economy with a note for his successor which said "there's no money left".
Laws told reporters: "When I arrived at my desk on the very first day as chief secretary, I found a letter from the previous chief secretary to give me some advice, I assumed, on how I conduct myself over the months ahead.
"Unfortunately, when I opened it, it was a one-sentence letter which simply said: 'Dear chief secretary, I'm afraid to tell you there's no money left,' which was honest but slightly less helpful advice than I had been expecting."

The Low Wage economy is a Tory dreamland for them. Their supporters who own firms that employ these low wage earners are supported by the Tax Credit system to acquire cheap labour. If not local then bussed in from Eastern Europe to fill the gaps. Housing Benefit similarly lines the pockets of Tory landlords and encourages high rents.
The solution would be decent wages for all and rent caps, which they have in USA the home of the Free Economy.

Shirly picking up litter IS A JOB....6 months on the dole=no job=.....Then pick up litter FOR A WAGE...Full time.
(Plenty of TRASH in London).
Street sweepers are ditching their brooms for state-of-the-art ‘vacuum cleaners’.
The three-wheeled machines, which cost £13,000 each, are already being used on the streets of Worthing.
The gadgets, called Gluttons, are estimated to be four times more productive than manual sweeping.
They are petrol-powered but started by a battery meaning they are also quiet.
The manufacturer claims the Glutton is no louder than 68 decibels, about the same as a domestic vacuum cleaner.
Worthing Borough Council drafted them in as part of its bid to keep the town tidy.
They are especially useful in cleaning hard to reach areas such as behind benches and under hedges.
Waste is collected in the machine's 240-litre tank from where it can be dumped into bins or a larger collection vehicle.
Councillor Bryan (CORR) Turner, cabinet member for a clean and green environment, said: “Street sweepers have certainly come a long way from their 'turn of the last century' roots.
“They look unusual and certainly don't look like the usual sweeper on the street.
“It makes sense for us to invest £26,000 in these sweepers as we like to keep the town centre as clean as possible for our visitors and businesses alike.
“But the public must play their part too. If they didn't dump the litter, we wouldn't have to pick up after them.
“We don't like to prosecute litter droppers but instead try to prevent people from littering in the first place through our education programme.”
The Gluttons are the latest addition to the town's litter-busting tactics, which includes more than 500 bins and 300 dog mess bins across the town.

How many people making sweeping judgements have actually had any experience of claiming benefits? I suspect it isn't quite as easy as suggested to continue claiming benefits and making no effort to get a job.

Targeting the workshy would also be morally just. The lazy should not be given a free ride simply because it makes little difference. It makes a great difference! The comparison with the robbing bankers IS justified. They too should be forced to repay but in a monetary fashion plus forced work. No chance of any of it happening though.

Farage may have a boat like a horse but his utterances are akin to what is excreted at the other end. Like some others who have contributed, I am frequently amazed and horrified by how many people are taken in by this pernicious nonsense. Some claimants are taking the piss but the vast majority are not. Some immigrants are benefit spongers - they are in a minority. One or two Muslims are murderous zealots - the overwhelming majority are as disgusted as the rest of us. Wise up - tales of folk making positive contributions do not sell newspapers or promote policies.

I think people tend to forget about the poverty of body/mind/soul of most of those at the bottom of the pile born into an environment devoid of the basic criteria required to even make an attempt at getting a foot onto the first foot of the ladder,no one to open doors for them no one to look out for and be of help for them, more or less humiliated and castigated, how many of our "honourable members" would make it under the same circumstances, when they spout this s--t they should produce their,s and their family,s cv,s,not many if any from "kitchen sink estates" I,ll vouch.

meanwhile corporations (and the billionsaires that own them) pay poverty wages, subsidised by actual tax payers, which allows them to make vast profits and, thanks to the current, have at least 100 new vehicles since 2010 by which they can ship ALL the profit offshore without paying a single penny in tax on it AND manage not to have the subject form any significant part of debate in the country
