betting ring pitch allocation. Jim Cremin racing post, "Scanlon explained he was advised by consultant Steve Clare, and part of the remit was to ensure a strong market, but also to include local firms who could gaurantee being able to reach the Essex course when the weather was poor"
sadly, even though in my application I advised them I live 10 mins from the course I was not considered suitable for the top 16

One-year deal for eight layers at Chelmsford
CHELMSFORD CITY, which stages the first of 58 fixtures in 2015 on Sunday, January 11, has confirmed its betting ring line-up for the opening year of operations. Joe Scanlon of Betfred, who is chairman of the new racecourse, a joint venture between Betfred and Bet Solutions International, said: "We were keen to establish the course in the first year and allow people to work out the real value of pitches, so we have entered a one-year deal with the eight bookmakers listed. "It's probably not well known but Fred Done's father was a racecourse bookie in the ‘bad old/good old days', so he has always had an affinity with the ring. Fred wants this to work for everyone so the only initial charge will be five times the admission, less than any other track, which covers the entrance for the bookmaker and a workman. Next year we will invite tenders and pitches will go to the highest bidders." Scanlon explained he was advised by consultant Steve Clare, and part of the remit was to ensure a strong market, but also to include local firms who could guarantee being able to reach the Essex course when the weather was poor. Scanlon is also looking at a system whereby bookmakers who cannot attend give notice, so reserve layers can take up the opportunity. The former temporary grandstand at what used to be Great Leighs is being replaced by a permanent structure at a cost of £6 million. Like the old stand, it is situated on the inside of the course.
Scanlon said: "From the steppings there will be a clear view from the last turn, some two and a half furlongs from home. It will also feature a high-level restaurant, operated by local caterers Graysons, which has a panoramic view of the course." The all-weather track, the only purpose-built one in Britain, was always popular with trainers and prize-money levels are set to be good. "Arc proved good prize-money attracts good horses and huge crowds with its Good Friday showcase of finals at Lingfield," Scanlon said. Chelmsford also has a ten-year media rights deal with SIS. Done's shareholding in SIS rose to 14 per cent after he acquired the Tote. Star Sports was one of many firms disappointed at not getting an opportunity to bet there, but owner Ben Keith plans to bid for a pitch when it comes up. In his regular blog he is cynical about the appearance of Ladbrokes and Hills on the list, but added: "I take this opportunity to wish the six successful independent applicants the very best of luck. I think the big days there will be just that, and I hope you all get a nice few quid. "Fred Done is a man that is an inspiration to every independent bookmaker in the country. Self-made, he has kicked on, and also kicked The Firms [the big three] in the balls at every opportunity!"

In the business world unsuccessful applicants for a job can ask for and expect an explanation as to the reasons they were were not appointed. I suspect that particular right will not apply in this case. I suspect it would be difficult to differentiate between the various merits of the applicants outside the 'High Street set' and therefore the methodology used to determine the 16 named positions remains open to conjecture but probably some string pulling might have played a part. Genuine unsuccessful aspirants should start making plans to ensure their bids succeed in twelve months time when the sole criteria will be 'how much are you prepared to pay ?'.

Must admit there are some miserable buggers amongst that 8 . The pity is that factmachine is not on the list to liven it up a bit but some goon wailing bigger than the machine at the top of his voice is probably not seen as advantageous to the home firms business ethic .

'Eloquently worded request' - where can you get one of those adge ? I have heard one omitted party has taken his rejection as 'a personal insult' - his pride might never recover !!!

Feck me is the bald knocker appointing the judge as well......
There will be more Stewards Inquiries and amended results than ever before.
Rancid operation and to site the Grandstand in the middle of the course shows how much thought has gone into it....

Crumbs skinto has got something right at last ! Ooops that should read Norfolk. The precedent being set by the course owner having a pitch in the ring is debatable whether it is a conflict of interests is for the individual to decide.

Another course you wont want to have a bet at = Barry you had result not getting a pick , as you would not be able to shout out honest prices like those in top 6 !!!

The SPs will be 2pc a runner (or more) every race....the crowd will be minimal bar perhaps Saturday nights....and after around a year Barry Johnson will have 3 of the 8 picks and the tote will have "pitches" dotted around every drinking hole...

The off course bookmakers are rubbing their hands together at the prospect of some serious market manipulation at Fred's track, imo, Barry - it's going to be just like Crayford.
Only those happy to play the game will need to apply...

personally i think its a joke that Barry Dennis hasnt been given a pitch if he lives only 10mins away from the track , love him or hate him its characters like him that make visiting Lingfield more enjoyable..
ive found that only thing better than backing a winner at Lingfield , is backing a winner with Barry..!!
the ring there will be all the worse for his exclusion and by the look of the list i agree with previous poster who said that his brown envelope obviously wasnt big enough..

Its 5 mins from the station by taxi on the way in, and a 30 minute walk back to the station after you have been serviced by the cartel betting into 130pc a race....

ive actually bet with most of the names on that list and once i asked for £100 @ 2/1 on a horse and walked away with my ticket only for the bookmaker to come running after me telling me id backed the wrong 2/1 chance , as there were 2 in the race. So i walked back and checked my ticket and i had backed the correct horse which i explained and then stood there while the bookmaker shouted at the guy on computer that he'd hedged my £100 onto the wrong horse..
i stood there amazed and laughing at them rowing and witnessed them strike bet after bet and the guy on the computer was duplicating every bet that was struck and i later realised that every bet he was hedging immediately on an exchange , pound for pound..!!
so for me there is no fun betting with those guys , knowing i've won £200 and knowing that theyve won £1.40 as well on my bet as they pay me out , i prefer the look on Barrys face when i know hes done his bollox..!!
there are a number on that list who i think just like saying they are bookmakers at dinner parties...
God help the punters of Chelmsford , i'll be sticking to Lingfield and Sandown..

Go up to betfraud at Chelmsford City and ask for the fractions..
The reply will be that we ban anyone that even has the audacity to back a winner online and so 14/100 against you keeping an account....
Rancid operative.

Though a member of staff from the BaldFred office at Goodwood walked up to pitch during the main meeting, asked for a tenner on an 8/1 shot and was told by the guy on the pitch he could have £3 @ 8/1 and the rest @ SP.
Sadly , it was totally lost on him.

If you look at the top tier you can just about see Ed Thompson assisting with the Grandstand construction to ensure the project is finished on time

Can't remember the full list from Great Leighs but Ed certainly deserves his place in the eight.
How many others in the eight were in the ten/twelve books who paid to bet at Great Leighs?
Which ten books will win the tendering process for 2016?

It seems to be lost on Fred Done that half the fun of going racing is to watch the bookmakers plying their trade, to decline Barry Dennis the right to work at his local track is short short sighted in the extreme, as love him or loathe him he is always great value to have in the betting ring. When i first started going racing to watch John Power (Jenkins) at the London dog tracks or Barry Dennis in the popular enclosure at Romford they enriched the experience greatly, sadly those days are gone.

Apologies JW, I didn't think Ed was on the original list that had 10 bookmakers. I know that others did subsequently bet there and that obv included ED
