Clearly realised that he was too far back as the field was so stretched, so started to make move earlier than he probably intended.
Didn't lose much ground by hugging the pack and timed it to perfection.
Blooming brilliant :-)

moores ride was the best worst ride imaginable..lesser horse would have crumbled and moore would have been lynched..to be wound up 900m from home and still win is freakish...very very good colt....glad he is now staying in oz and being trained by Chris Waller in sydney

Been saying it for a few yrs now, Moore is the best on the Planet imo. But, what the hell was crock Jim going on about on atr this morn about the use of the whip? Moore used his whip 6or7 times in the race, so what the hell was he getting at, idiot . Why do some of our so-called racing people want to shot our Great sport of racing down ?? Esp when no rule was broken ? (even with our rules over here) Get a grip Jim & the rest.

> Moonee Valley is a cambered track and if you have momentum, you can > be out very wide and still win. Nothing wrong with his tactics
As long as the pace is on, I doubt Adelaide could have sustained a 1000 metre run and come 8 wide round the home bend to win if the leaders had it easy in front and did not tire in the second half of the race.
It also helped his cause that his main challengers Fawlkner and Silent Achiever (Sacred Falls did not stay) were almost as wide has he was.

Joseph O'Brien's ride on Australia in the Irish Champion Stakes would have been hailed a great ride too if he had managed to hold on and Ryan Moore would have been crucified here had he not been able to get up, that's how close the margins are.
In fairness to Moore though Adelaide wasn't drawn well and got away slowly where from a bad draw you either have to use up a lot of horse early on to get a position or you end up choosing to go wide to get a clear run or take the inside route and hope the gaps come for you, where you are then a genius or an idiot all depending on how your luck goes.
If Jamie Spence had given Adelaide that ride and been narrowly beaten then there would have been calls for him to retire now rather than wait and ironically Spencer has given Side Glance a decent ride here where he's had to use up a bit of horse early to gain a position and then mid-race lets him drop off the lead a little to get it a breather before having to be ridden again to close the gap when going for his finish, but ultimately he was beaten and so the good ride gets overlooked.

jockey error cost the 2nd horse victory on a horse that's usually up near the front on a track that was favouring on pace runners....what was you think ryan moore at the start and the pressure cooker run for home....certainty beaten

I suggest you look at the horses performances at the start, been scrubbed up to keep in contact, was never going to have speed from the gate even if it jumped from the rails. selected Adelaide to win. I stated on the aussie formum during the week the horse would drop out and storm home.
still one of the 3 worsts rides in Australian history in a group 1...but slightly better than kinanes in 1994 Melbourne cup.

over the 2 racing days at moonee valley, especially Friday, the leaders didn't come back to the field and most on pacers figured in the finish yesterdat ( Saturday )
