you didnt need to pay the tax but you got it deducted at that % from your winnings
Report doantwin2easy October 21, 2014 8:08 PM BST
who knows. i started gambling in 91 and only ever paid 10% or 9% since.

the dealer - you could choose whether to pay it before of after
Report the dealer October 21, 2014 8:12 PM BST
say it was 10%, on a tenner you obviously paid a pound if you didnt and say you won a hundred they took a tenner off your returns

EXGG3200 - Duty rates: General betting duty

General betting duty was introduced on 24 October 1966 and was charged on the gross turnover (that is, the total amount staked by the punters). From 29 March 1987, general betting duty only applied to off-course bookmakers. The historical rates of duty are as follows
Date    On-course bets    Off-course bets
24 October 1966    2½%    2½%
25 March 1968    5%    5%
27 April 1970    5%    6%
31 July 1972    4%    6%
31 March 1974    4%    7½%
12 July 1981    4%    8%
29 March 1987    No duty    8%
1 April 1992    No duty    7¾%
