didn't know alec but he did buy us a meal once.
we were staying near Gloucester for the Cheltenham festival , must be 30 years ago and met up with john brown [ burnley ] for the evening meal. we went to a pub hotel in the centre for a steak meal and were seated across from alec denby and others who were drinking in a group .
after enjoying our steaks plus a beer apiece we were presented with the bill and asked by the waitress for our room number .
john piped up with Denby , room 6....we could see his room key on the table in front of him.
the waitress was happy and brought us a receipt and thanked us for dining..we left her a £5 tip , rather large in those days.
