Ribbons (Manduro-Sister Act) has just won the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville.

Her half brother (By New Approach) is on offer in Book 1 of the Tattersalls Yearling sales this year.  Well he was until about 10 min ago anyway....Still hoping they change their mind.

Nice update for his page.

No way would you want that withdrawn - that'll fund your matings for years.  Fanshawe getting a Group 1 out of that is nothing short of miraculous.

Of course you are quite correct yer ma.  I don't pay the bills (or much of them of course).

This has become a very commercial colt now, but I'd like to see him run in our colours of course.  Especially if he is any good!

I guess they have taken the view that he has a very desirable pedigree and a very good looking colt with an excellent temperament, which makes him a very commercial colt.  And yesterday's result just adds to that.

They were bitten badly with SOVIET DREAM (OASIS DREAM-SOVIET SONG) who with a pedigree like that would have presumably been a commercially attractive yearling, and who unfortunately did not live up to his pedigree.

I see their dilemma, but I also see the commercial sense.

I do wonder, however, if Lord Derby looks at AUSTRALIA with a pang or two of regret (I believe he was progeny of Ouija Board to be sold at public auction).  500K guineas looks cheap now, of course.

RE RIBBONS, this is always a filly that they have liked-there were very long faces after she was beaten of 95 at Ascot I'm sure (I did my conkers that day) and she has improved markedly over the last few months, and has been working exceptionally well at home.  Don't underestimate her.  She will improve again.

After all, Halling got stuffed in a handicap at Windsor as did Eagle Top (beaten off 92 at Leicester this season)

you are being remarkably phlegmatic about this bbc.

presumably the breeding operation is still privately owned and the club members are at the mercy of the market? are you updated on stock in which you have no financial interest having paid for the mares?
Report Big Black Cat August 26, 2014 3:51 PM BST
I assure you I am not phlegmatic about it at all RA!  I desperately want to keep the colt because they have always loved him, he is a very good looking animal, and he has the pedigree to be a champion!

The fact he's a Book 1 Yearling says it all on that front presumably?

The breeding operation is owned and managed by the club-I certainly pay my few quid every year for the upkeep of said mares and training fees of the HIT (and even covering fees no doubt, but it doesn't really entitle me to much.  I have been with the club for a very long time, but I don't think I can claim to have paid for any of our mares..

They are also selling the Pour Moi-Sistine filly (bred on very similar lines to CAMELOT)in Ireland this time as well.  I am not desperately happy about that either.  Its selling off the Crown Jewels of the breeding programme for me, but like Yer Ma says, its going to be a massive injection of cash to the operation.

I will be expecting

Apologies-I will be expecting more investment in more quality bloodstock if these sales produce the injection of funding they expect.
Report RoyalAcademy August 26, 2014 5:33 PM BST
I just think that "ownership" is a term probably not often mentioned in connection with the breeding operation. I assume there's no guarantee the profits from a big yearling will accrue to the club and I'll be amazed if you tell me there are annual accounts, encompassing all fin aspects of the biz, circulated to members.

My guess is that you are a member as long as you pay your annual fee but ultimately Donald Trump owns the racecourse!
Report RoyalAcademy August 26, 2014 5:34 PM BST
the golf club!
Report yer ma August 27, 2014 11:12 AM BST
In fairness - selling the colts and running the fillies for any operation is hardly controversial policy.  If they are nice then those two together will make £500k plus.  You need that sort of dosh to keep covering group 1 mares 'properly', won't get it from fees or winnings.

That said, unless the T&Cs explain the re-investment rules then potentially these breeding profits don't belong to members.  I wouldnt know.

Yes RA and YM, I would be very hopeful of at least that much for both of those yearlings combined , and I hope we will be putting pretty high reserves on both.  We don't want to be giving our crown jewels away for tuppence ha'penny!

We have been using such sires in the past without having to resort to bloodstock sales of our best yearlings and that's where my consternation is.  We sold DANDINO to the Australians for about £500K-I thought that was a good price considering the horse's age and that he was below top class.  I was very surprised that he ran so very well in the Melbourne Cup as he never showed any inclination to stay 2M in our hands...Fair play, he was a great servant to us, there might be a little stallion job for him somewhere at the end of his career.

I think I kind of answered this previously, but if we were to unearth a colt who turned out to be FRANKEL mk 2, the members would pocket our share of the prize money, but his £100K a pop covering fee would go straight to the Club-and that's fair enough, as I don't see how I would be entitled to much of that for my £100+ a year.  I would expect a bit more action at the sales and a few trips to Galileo and the like (if the cross was suitable, mind you).

The New Approach-Sister Act colt sold for 300K guineas to David Redvers. Lot 51 this morning.

RIBBONS continues to improve, another very solid run in a better race at the weekend, and she stays in training.

Elite's Pour Moi-Sistine yearling filly sold for 350K guineas at Book 2 today.

The dam is 3 parts sister to the dam of Camelot, and this is the highest price paid for a yearling by the sire (so far).

An excellent result.

Don't know if the questions ever been asked, but where does the money for yearlings and foal sales actually go to?

In short, to top up the Club funds SS

Thanks for the reply BBC, good luck for the future with Elite. I used to be a member a long long time ago. Can remember getting an owners badge for a novice chaser who had travelled all the way up to Musselburgh, ridden by Norman Williamson, touched odds on and got beat.....ouch!

This colt (New Approach-Sister Act) has been named GOLDMEMBER by its new owners.

Looks like Elite have a couple of nice horses to look forward to next year.

ZEST (DUKE OF MARMALADE EX AFFINITY) is out of a SADLERS WELLS half sister to SOVIET SONG and SISTER ACT (dam of RIBBONS).  They are all from the same family of foundation mare KALINKA.

She improved to take a traditionally good Doncaster maiden yesterday, after pulling hard in a slow run race, improving on her debut short headed second.

MARSHA (ACCLIMATION EX MARLINKA)is from the same family, her Dam being a listed winning sprinter, and her granddam a BARATHEA half sister to SOVIET SONG and SISTER ACT.  She got some all important black type yesterday after being listed placed in Dundalk against older and group class sprinters.

There is also an EXCEED AND EXCEL EX SISTER ACT (half sister to RIBBONS) and a SPEIGHTSTOWN EX SOVIET SONG filly to go into training as yearlings this year (unsurprisingly both with Mr Fanshawe at Newmarket)
Report Big Black Cat November 30, 2015 10:00 PM GMT
RIBBONS is through the ring tomorrow LOT 1985 (Reserve unknown!)

The family has had one good result already this week when a colt foal by Dark Angel ex Margarita sold for 250000G to Shadwell.  Margarita was a lightly raced (and placed) full sister to SOVIET SONG and SISTER ACT (Dam of RIBBONS and ZEST)
Report Big Black Cat December 1, 2015 6:51 PM GMT
So RIBBONS bought back for 500000Gns.

Cant say I'm heartbroken, although it will be interesting to see who she's covered by and whether they try and sell her in foal. The injection of funds would have been most welcome of course.

I think this mare will breed some good animals-I think her mum (SISTER ACT)would have been a real quality broodmare given time (JRF is already comparing her Exceed and Excel filly yearling to SS and Ribbons.

Good luck to any of you who are hoping to buy/sell in the next few weeks and months.
