Well...!
Report jockeyhunter August 21, 2014 12:27 PM BST
Damn that means there will be one extra horse in each race to consider

Report geoff m August 21, 2014 12:35 PM BST
Spencer stated after 20 years riding horses he still cant judge the pace of a race and feels he is unlikely ever to .
So to be fair to owners /trainers and backers he has decided to call it a day.
He apologises to layers for all future potential loss of profits.
Report ashleigh August 21, 2014 12:36 PM BST
oisin murphy for the job?

Balding connection there...

Report trevor007 August 21, 2014 12:42 PM BST
thought he retired from race riding many seasons ago, glad to see he's retiring from the saddle, its taken sometime for him to realise he pasted his sale by date a long time ago
Report millhouse August 21, 2014 12:51 PM BST
Been phoning it in for years now, imo...
Report EastLower Gooner August 21, 2014 1:06 PM BST
Can't really blame him....seems he's landed himself a cushy management role with the qataris

he'll be able to have a decent meal and a few bottles of bubbly when he wants
Report differentdrum August 21, 2014 1:21 PM BST
Let's hope he doesn't reconsider. You wonder if they wanted to get rid of him and this was the convenient way of doing it.
Report chhh August 21, 2014 1:22 PM BST
Can he have his own betfair account now??
Report Clarky9 August 21, 2014 1:23 PM BST
Two times champion jockey

Will be sorely missed, great talent!
Report know all August 21, 2014 1:26 PM BST
saw this , his best ride was with emma ramsden.

Terrible jockey for the punter
Report lead on August 21, 2014 1:30 PM BST
Think you've got it right there, differentdrum.Mind you,he used to be OK years ago when he rode for the Ramsdens ... they even trusted him with the ride on their daughter!
Report carrot1960 August 21, 2014 1:30 PM BST
and just as qatar racing was going so well, all down hill from here for them
Report lead on August 21, 2014 1:32 PM BST
sorry,know all.slow typing
Report Marcce August 21, 2014 1:33 PM BST
Have to wonder if he's jumped or been pushed here. Strange he should say he's not necessarily ready to retire from race riding but that he's doing it anyway. There would have been a dearth of top jobs available to him if they had decided to give the number one job to someone else.

I'll be in a minority but I'll be sorry to see him go. He was very good at his best but seemed to have become far too one dimensional with the hold up rides in recent years. Shame really because I felt he was one of the better front running jockeys on the rare occasions he used that tactic.
Report johnwark August 21, 2014 1:36 PM BST
Qatari's wouldn't jock him off so promoted him. Genius
Report TRD.Racing August 21, 2014 1:38 PM BST
The most over rated jockey for many a year. How he has done as well out of the game as he has is a mystery. He has managed to get more horses beat that should have won than any other jockey I have seen ride
Report Greg_Gory August 21, 2014 1:40 PM BST
Emma
Some hate him because he holds horses up Laugh
Report ashleigh August 21, 2014 1:40 PM BST

Report Oceanfinance August 21, 2014 1:50 PM BST
Another blow to liquidity on here.
Report joe39 August 21, 2014 1:51 PM BST
Thought that was an odd thing for C4 Racing to say yesterday "There's Jamie Spencer, having a season to forget, needs a few winners for Qatar".
A sad day for some, but I'm not a fan, only knew 1 style - picking them off 1-by-1 from the back. No Plan B.
Report xmoneyx August 21, 2014 1:52 PM BST

Must be a decent bloke everyone saying good things about him.

Met him when he rode mates horse. Was very quiet

Horse was held up and lost.

It will be a Cry shame not to see him come 'off the pace' on a 'wet sail' again.

The Liberace of jockeys.
Report MJK August 21, 2014 2:10 PM BST
Never a fan of his but if he has a problem with something like depression or anything like that then I'd wish him well and hope he sorts himself out.
Report joe39 August 21, 2014 2:11 PM BST
Haggas on C4: "I'm staggered actually. I'm surprised. Jamie still has so much to offer. Not a great problem with his weight. But maybe he needs to sit back and reflect. He's had a few personal issues...I'm sure. And maybe he just needs a break from it".
Report harry callaghan August 21, 2014 2:12 PM BST
just a shame every horse wasn't arazi busvaldo... he certainly rode them like they were
Report Busvaldo August 21, 2014 2:14 PM BST
I merely jest, hope he sorts himself out.

Why did she quiz Haggas? How often does he put him up? Just got the standard response you would get from any racing insider.

Facts 21 Aug 14 14:05

"Hmm something is not being said !"

My first thought exactly, and what was said seems carefully worded.

Not his biggest fan, and when he was younger I thought too much was put on him too soon and he wasn't ready for it, and he wasn't no Walter Swinburn.  Emma said he as a jockey he was like Marmite, punters either liked him or they didn't, yes, fair comment that. But more to this than what has been said.
Report yorkie1 August 21, 2014 4:27 PM BST
good riddens to an utter joke of a jockey - he won't be missed.
Report Le-ark August 21, 2014 4:32 PM BST
I heard he was going to train greyhounds, cos they don't need jockys
Report Oldgit1 August 21, 2014 5:25 PM BST
Got himself a nice job. He doesn't need the hard life any longer. He has made his money and he comes from a moneyed family.
Report swift-tuttle August 21, 2014 5:32 PM BST
He was interviewed on ATR on Tuesday afternoon - spoke about the big races coming up at York and also a race in France that a filly had been diverted to because of Tagroodha.

Thought he spoke very intelligently, was prepared to go to greater lengths than normal to analyse races etc. I think he'll do well in his new advisor role.
Report adamski August 21, 2014 5:35 PM BST
Could make a lot more money if it works out, without the aggravation, stallion rights etc. If it doesn't he can always come back riding.
Report geordie1956 August 21, 2014 5:40 PM BST
He might just be tired with maintaining the strict dietary regime required...it does sometimes happen with jockeys even those in privileged positions....he has plenty of money in the bank & this presents a great opportunity...if he has tired of race riding or the regime required to do so then cannot blame him really
Report Wesdag August 21, 2014 5:42 PM BST
Perhaps he reads the regular BF forums in his honour and isn't so thin skinned.
Report The Pinhooker August 21, 2014 8:10 PM BST
Without wishing to be over-flattering to Mr. Spencer, he's obviously made a huge success of his life thus far. All right minded human beings will wish him ever continuing good fortune in the years ahead.
Report Ramruma August 21, 2014 8:12 PM BST
As a punter, I'll miss him because he was quite easy to read. The popular analysis of him that runs through this thread is wrong imo, or at least, it misses the most important truths about his strengths and weaknesses.
Report gemini01 August 21, 2014 8:42 PM BST
I would say he will be on this forum in between races in the future to keep his mind occupied while there is a break between races Grin
