Spencer stated after 20 years riding horses he still cant judge the pace of a race and feels he is unlikely ever to .
So to be fair to owners /trainers and backers he has decided to call it a day.

thought he retired from race riding many seasons ago, glad to see he's retiring from the saddle, its taken sometime for him to realise he pasted his sale by date a long time ago
Can't really blame him....seems he's landed himself a cushy management role with the qataris
he'll be able to have a decent meal and a few bottles of bubbly when he wants
Let's hope he doesn't reconsider. You wonder if they wanted to get rid of him and this was the convenient way of doing it.

Think you've got it right there,differentdrum.Mind you,he used to be OK years ago when he rode for the Ramsdens ... they even trusted him with the ride on their daughter!

Have to wonder if he's jumped or been pushed here. Strange he should say he's not necessarily ready to retire from race riding but that he's doing it anyway. There would have been a dearth of top jobs available to him if they had decided to give the number one job to someone else.
I'll be in a minority but I'll be sorry to see him go. He was very good at his best but seemed to have become far too one dimensional with the hold up rides in recent years. Shame really because I felt he was one of the better front running jockeys on the rare occasions he used that tactic.

Qatari's wouldn't jock him off so promoted him. Genius
The most over rated jockey for many a year. How he has done as well out of the game as he has is a mystery. He has managed to get more horses beat that should have won than any other jockey I have seen ride
Thought that was an odd thing for C4 Racing to say yesterday "There's Jamie Spencer, having a season to forget, needs a few winners for Qatar".

Never a fan of his but if he has a problem with something like depression or anything like that then I'd wish him well and hope he sorts himself out.

Why did she quiz Haggas? How often does he put him up? Just got the standard response you would get from any racing insider.

My first thought exactly, and what was said seems carefully worded.
Not his biggest fan, and when he was younger I thought too much was put on him too soon and he wasn't ready for it, and he wasn't no Walter Swinburn. Emma said he as a jockey he was like Marmite, punters either liked him or they didn't, yes, fair comment that. But more to this than what has been said.

Got himself a nice job. He doesn't need the hard life any longer. He has made his money and he comes from a moneyed family.
He was interviewed on ATR on Tuesday afternoon - spoke about the big races coming up at York and also a race in France that a filly had been diverted to because of Tagroodha.
Thought he spoke very intelligently, was prepared to go to greater lengths than normal to analyse races etc. I think he'll do well in his new advisor role.

Could make a lot more money if it works out, without the aggravation, stallion rights etc. If it doesn't he can always come back riding.
He might just be tired with maintaining the strict dietary regime required...it does sometimes happen with jockeys even those in privileged positions....he has plenty of money in the bank & this presents a great opportunity...if he has tired of race riding or the regime required to do so then cannot blame him really
Perhaps he reads the regular BF forums in his honour and isn't so thin skinned.
Without wishing to be over-flattering to Mr. Spencer, he's obviously made a huge success of his life thus far. All right minded human beings will wish him ever continuing good fortune in the years ahead.
As a punter, I'll miss him because he was quite easy to read. The popular analysis of him that runs through this thread is wrong imo, or at least, it misses the most important truths about his strengths and weaknesses.
