Just a curios question here atttheraces say the following ..
QASSER may be worth a final try off just 1lb higher than his recent second at Huntingdon as he has been in good form since he was switched to handicap company and deserves to be rewarded for his consistency. Hold The Bucks might be the biggest danger after he won for the first time for these connections over C&D a fortnight ago and only goes up 5lb. Clonusker just held on at Fontwell, but can still be competitive off 6lb higher.

To my knowledge and looking through the horses past races firstly QASSER was (10st 11lb)  last time out and he is (11st 4lb) tomorrow which would make him 5 pounds higher ..not 1 pound as stated . the same goes for HOLD THE BUCKS and Clonsuker who were (10st) each last time and tomorrow are 11-5 and 11-7 respectively but attheraces states only a 5lb increase and a 6lb increase where it seems to be both have been increased by over a stone each ???

THE RACE IS 5:00 PLUMPTON 10/03/2014
Report Ramruma March 10, 2014 2:04 AM GMT
Not looked at the race but in general when people say X is "2 pounds lower" or "5 pounds higher" they are talking about the official handicap rating the horse is running off, rather than the weight it will carry which depends mainly on the rating of the top-weight.

^^
correct qasser ran of an official rating of 90 last time and runs off 91 today

RACE CONDITIONS
20Feb14      90

28Dec13      86

16Dec13      86

As the horse has gone up in the handicap system without winning thus he or rather it races off a 1lb mark when he did not win.In truth he races 5lb higher from when he received his mark.Still did not win.But timeform have him a certain sure fire winner.Quote "Looks winner waiting to happen off this sort of mark."
Report theonlywayforward March 10, 2014 2:38 AM GMT
The weight to carry in a handicap race is determined by the allocated handicap mark.
Report callum192 March 10, 2014 2:40 AM GMT
wheres this quote on the timeform website  ??
Report theonlywayforward March 10, 2014 2:44 AM GMT
Fair on Flat in Ireland and plenty of promise over hurdles, unable to reel in stronger stayer at Huntingdon (2m) last time. Looks winner waiting to happen off this sort of mark.

oh i see thanks for your help you have explained alot !!
i got word for CLONUSKER anyways and i know hes only gone up 6 in the ratings and QASSER has only gone up 1 and looks the main danger but the weight there carrying now is alot more than their last time out .. is it not an awful difference to be carrying over a stone from one race to another ??

And have a nice day gl.

as long as it's not a very small horse it shouldn't make a lot of difference as the more weight it is carrying should mean it's going into a worse race against a worse class of horse
Report racingguru March 10, 2014 3:06 AM GMT
I'd be very very worried if I were the OP. Firstly not to know about official ratings..............well best of luck is all I can say and then 10st 11 to 11st 4 according to his calculations is 5lbs ..............again best of luck but footie, snooker, darts may be a better alternative.

Hang on scrap the snooker and darts.......scores go above 10.

callum192 you need to get the basics right before you even think about how to work out ratings.i've been at this 20 odd years and don't do my own.
if you look at the official rating and the racing post ratings they will be different.people use different formulas to work them out and it's not easy.if anyone's got a good way of working them they aint gonna give them away.
Report callum192 March 10, 2014 3:27 AM GMT
thats all i was looking for is the basics .. would you so kindly explain?
Report tambhoy5 March 10, 2014 3:34 AM GMT
what you've been told on this thread about understanding the difference between official ratings and weight carried is a start.a lot of ratings are based on course, distance ground etc previous form.
i personally start with the attheraces speed ratings and go from there.taking in to account how the horse has previously run under the conditions mentioned earlier.

They never tell us their real weights, only what they carry today.
Report metro john March 10, 2014 4:27 AM GMT
The official handicappers weights are opinions(which can be very wrong,as is life)

Callum

Look at the race, click on "AT A GLANCE"
you will see    OR    TS    RPR

OR are official ratings.

CLONUSKER runs off a rating of 94 today, if you click on Clonuskers form, you will see it ran off 88 last time, so in effect it is 6LB higher today....regardless of how much weight it is carrying .

It ran in a (Class 4) (0-115, 4yo+) (2m2f110y) 2m2½f Heavy 9 hdles last time

Today it runs in a (CLASS 5) (4yo+ 0-100).....which is a lesser race, so the closer the rating is to 100 the more weight it will carry.... you will see cranky corner is 99 so has top weight........

It just say got home off 88 last time over 2f extra so will the 6LB rise be too much today?
but it travelled well at todays trip so you could say 2m suited it better, so the extra 6LB against slightly inferior horses today might not be enough to stop it..

But As they say weight stops trains

thats all i was looking for is the basics .. would you so kindly explain?

The official ratings are called collateral ratings and the ratings represents lbs.

With handicapping, if the finishing distance between the first and the second is 1 length, and the handicapper is working on a scale of two pounds for a length then the winner is 2 lbs better than the second without taking other things into consideration like ease of win.
The handicapper works his way down the field rating them all like that.
Then when other runners race against each other he can compare their ratings and make any adjustments.
Handicap ratings are constantly being re assessed it's not an exact science. It's more like trial and error.

That basically is how ratings are worked out.
Report Dr Crippen March 10, 2014 10:45 AM GMT
Working out your own rating is a waste of time in my opinion.
It's all been done for you by experts anyway. And even they can't agree.
Many horses never run two races the same. Others are improving or going back. Some only turn up at the races race fit once or twice a year.
And how many times have we seen a horse well down in the ratings take a big race?
Report koikeeper March 10, 2014 3:09 PM GMT
Form just been boosted for CLONUSKER
