Not really for me cork as you nh boys are more onto it but am interested in the big race on tuesday as have been to most of the big festivals in the world and for sure the parade fks the inexperienced horse so a layers dream as they have ran their race before it starts.For sure you can trust me on that.Best of luck anyhow as the real value always lies in the handicaps which is always true on the flat.

(For Q13 you might have considered Solfen, who won both races in the same year).

ged, I did have Solfen as a qualifier but left it out as on the data input it showed different trainer and jockey combinations for the two victories which made me suspicious and as I was unable to check it out, felt it best to omit.
For the RSA it had Dreaper/Taaffe and for the Stayers O'Grady/Beasley.

Best of luck to everyone for a winning week and hopefully casualties will be minimal (equine and human...!).

Just for interest (apologies if none), here's a piece by Ged Walsh (not me!!) about Solfen from the RP from a few years ago, (though there's at least 1 error in it - it says the Broadway was on the opening day, but it wasn't, so the horse did not have 'a day off', and it also says Johnny Haine rode him in the Spa - the Glasgow Herald results says H Beasley). Anyway, I'm sure some of it is correct!! :-


Ged Walsh on two Festival successes for Solfen

THE anticipation of a horse going to Cheltenham, never mind winning, was no less in 1960 than it is now.

Every year, many horses in October are touted as 'Cheltenham winners'. But by the time March comes along, many have not reached their earlier promise or have 'gone wrong' through one ailment or another. Stable stars are unstable.

In a stable near Thurles, in the village of Ballynonty, WT 'Willie' O'Grady had such a potential horse in Solfen.

Willie was born and reared in Little Island, County Cork, where his father bred and trained some horses with modest success.

He rode as an amateur at an early age, then turned professional, being Irish jumps champion in 1934 and 1935, having a 40.5 per cent win-to-rides ratio in the former year.

In the 1940s he began training, and had a steady stream of winners. But Ireland in the 1950s was not the Ireland of today, and it was hard to keep a stable going. Debts had mounted but were relieved by a nice coup on Rockbottom at Roscommon in 1957.

That year, a gentleman named Barney Naughton asked Willie to find him a horse. The horse bought was by Soladalo out of Fenora, and they named him Solfen.

He won twice at Limerick in 1958 and again in 1959. He won again at Leopardstown on January 15, 1960, then it was on to Cheltenham.

Solfen won the Broadway Steeplechase (now the Royal & SunAlliance) on the opening day of the Festival, ridden by Pat Taaffe, and then had a day off.

He was brought out again the next day and won the Spa (now World) Hurdle, ridden by Johnny Haine, and came home to a hero's welcome.

Willie continued to train until his untimely death, and he and his wife Mary bred many winners too. But perhaps the one he would be most proud of is his son, who has continued to turn out the winners from the same stable.

Willie's son is, of course, Edward O'Grady.

Interesting additional info ged, by coincidence the place the O'Grady dynasty started, Little Island, is only a few miles from me, though of course it is vastly different now, being a hive of activity with numerous companies having based themselves there in all the different business parks that now have taken over Little Island.
Think it is safe to say that Dreaper on my data was the incorrect detail, and that Beasley rode it on the second occasion, have adjusted my records as I have for the Gloucestershire Hurdle Divisions, thanks for all your guidance and help.
