One of the 12 Dickinson winners on Boxing Day 1982, if memory serves.
Report geoff m February 11, 2014 3:17 PM GMT
Yes he was Prince Rupert remarkable he only had around 60 horses in the stable at the time think he ran 20 on Boxing Day and only 1 finished out the frame.

Can`t remember, perhaps someone can refresh my memory if I won that glorious day Crazy

Here`s me in the King George the following year. No horse could jump better than me Grin

Pure sacrilege naming horses after past greats. I think the current rule is that they can do it after 25 years, except winners of Classics.

Seen one running the other day named Chil The Kite Sad Terrible. I remember the original which was trained by Bruce Hobbs and owned by Lord (or maybe Eva Lady) Rosebery. My favourite colours of all time. Primrose and Rose hoops. Scotland`s national football team actually wore strips of the colours in a wartime international against England. Lord Rosebery was a leading patron of the SFA at the time. Happy No other owner has had his colours worn by an international or club football team.

Some great names from the past there geoff, thanks for that. Delius was a good one and wrote some good music too did he Crazy Brunton Park another old favourite, named after Carlisle Utd`s football ground, and I think owned by the Carlisle chairman, whose name escapes me.
Report geoff m February 11, 2014 4:51 PM GMT
Remember going to Nottingham in around 81 think Broadsword won the city trial hurdle under top weight
Marnik was previously trained by Ken Oliver and had been off the course for over a year made his debut for Michael Dickenson managed to snaffle some 11/2 first show on books and quickly backed in to around 9/4 ish won easily.
Was Carlisle chairman Cant recall his name think colours where red with black sleeves

I might be wrong but I seem to recollect the incomparable Badsworth Boy beating Rathgorman in the Castleford on the Boxing Day.
With Wayward Lad beating Silver Buck .......they only entered 19 races, winning 12.

Anybody remember Dickinson`s True Wish? Did it not fall one day, was remounted and still won? or did it finish 2nd? I remember it had a magnificent white blaze. MWD and his mother before him, trained some great jumpers. Broncho II, Dorlesa and Gay Spartan spring to mind.
Report themightymac February 11, 2014 5:10 PM GMT
geoff, I remember Jolly Good, whose colours were very smart indeed, but I can`t remember his prominent owner. Perhaps blackbarn will kindly assist.
Report geoff m February 11, 2014 5:10 PM GMT
Think Broncho and Dorlesa where in the same ownership Frank Tyldesley at least 1 of em won the mildmay of flete around 75/76 ish
Report themightymac February 11, 2014 5:19 PM GMT
geoff, Chil The Kite didn`t win the Magnet Cup but Jolly Good won it in 1975 beating Mr Bigmore and Prominent. Mrs J Bricken owned it. Her colours escape me but I think she had a prominent sash. blackbarn - HELP

Another Hobbs horse, Take A Reef won it in 1974
Report themightymac February 11, 2014 5:22 PM GMT
There were some great owners and fantastic colours about in them days. Arabs ruined the romance of the game and drove the majority of the famous gentry away, who couldn`t compete financially with them.

Frank Tyldesley, he owned some crackers with the Dickinsons

Sorry to come to this late.  Cork quite correct on the colours.  Nice to see a mention of Rosebery's Primrose and Rose hoops.  For those who don't know the noble Lords family name was Primrose hence the naming of the colours.
Report themightymac February 11, 2014 6:30 PM GMT
Thanks cork langer for the Bricken colours. Time can play tricks on the memory. Who was the prominent Hobbs owner who had light colours with a Black sash?
Report themightymac February 11, 2014 6:34 PM GMT
Hello Blackbarn, hope you are well and was delayed counting the days winnings Crazy

I have a nice photo waiting approval by moderators which I think you will appreciate. Will post later tonight, following dinner. Happy
Report themightymac February 11, 2014 6:45 PM GMT
Is it possible the light grey colours with black sash I am thinking about were Mrs Bricken`s 2nd colours or perhaps her husbands, or did they indeed belong to some other prominent owner Confused
Report blackbarn February 11, 2014 6:53 PM GMT
Hi mightymac.  No such luck, was digging parsnips!  I have no trace of Frau Bricken having second colours or a husband with colours.  You are not thinking of Hobbs own colours are you - they were very pale blue with quite dark crossbelts?  I will look them up.
Report blackbarn February 11, 2014 6:59 PM GMT
Hobbs trained for Lady Butt - White with Red sash and sleeves. Trained Jacinth to win the Coronation for her?.
Report geordie1956 February 11, 2014 7:58 PM GMT
Did the owner of W Six Times (the original) come on telly one day & say when asked why it was called as it was  - say; went well, will win, when wanted
Report themightymac February 11, 2014 8:08 PM GMT
Thanks blackbarn. I am definitely thinking of white or grey with a Black sash, maybe it wasn`t a Hobbs owner, perhaps Bill Watts? Don`t waste too much time on it mate, maybe I should start to put water in the whisky CrazyCrazy
Report blackbarn February 11, 2014 8:38 PM GMT
Too late mac, cant stop now.  Have been thru what I think are all the owners of Hobbs group winners, but could be a less successful owner. I have found one set of colours that match quite well, that of Lady Chelsea (White with Black sash and cap). She had horses with John Dunlop but I cannot find a group or other big winner for her. Will keep looking, single body colours with a contrasing sash tend to be quite long standing colours (unless the cap is something other than plain.

As a sad and happy footnote my late wife wrote to Michael Dickenson  after 1983 Gold Cup asking if it was possible for me to go on a stable visit .
He wrote back(letter I still have and signed it personally)asking me to ring him in mid summer and he would organise a date in august when the stars where back in from their summer break which I duly did.
So me and a mate where duly invited on a saturday in august 83 up to Dunkeswick around a dozen other folks there .
Superb day happy memories.
