To be fair at the majority of racecourses these days tins of beans cost the same at all the shops in the area. Then the moment someone changes their price for that tin of beans everybody else changes to the same price within seconds.

Putting a bet on with the bookies at most courses nowadays comes down to which of them looks the friendliest.

Adge we've been here before!

Let's compare your selected race with the 7 runner non-handicap at 2:40 :-

Chelt 17th Nov - 14:40

                  Win        Place
Sire De Grugy     1.97       1.42
Kid Cassidy       6          2.52
Special Tiara     9          3.55
Oiseau De Nuit    12         4.2
His Excellency    15.5       5.5
Tataniano         23         7
Mad Moose         32         9.2

All place odds better than 1/4 on Betfair for a 7 runner non-handicap.

Come Racing?    I think I'll stay at home with the machine, ta.

adge - those figures on the Greatwood don't bear out your point. Flaxen Flare is exactly 1/4 place at those odds. Several of the others are slightly better than 1/5, and that's comparing the place odds with Betafir win odds, not bookies win odds.

just so adge can give me a maths lesson, forgetting barry dennis,s nuisance customers,he,s a few questions,
at most meetings even big meetings on a saturday how many ew bets to money that makes a difference to your take,[ you,d probably make more giving the coffees, burgers, chips a miss ]do you take, how many do you pay out on and how many that you pay out might actually save you money,
ie paying out on a 50 ew winner at 5 to 1,when if you are paying the wrong terms the punter might just say stuff it and have the ton on the nose,

you,ll now give me a maths lesson about every horse in the race been in the book, every placed horse whatever the odds been backed by someone etc
Report adge November 17, 2013 2:35 PM GMT
lol , no I don't bother with such records[ maybe I shouldn't with the chips either ]
on average my books show win money 70% to place money 30% where 6/7 runner races are less than 10% place and bad each way races are often over 40% place.
all my larger each way punters don't have any problem with 1/5th 1234 in 16 runner handicaps.
we do get the rare odd moan about the terms but direct these to the betting shops warning them that they will get a smaller win price though.
turn up at thirsk one day and i'll show you. now that's a better education

Nobody should be running a charity.  Why should the on-course books be forced to bet over-broke on some races?  If you go out anywhere you will always have to pay an inflated price for things as a cost of your entertainment compared to sitting at home.  Just pop down to any basic restaurant and you will pay £15 for a bottle of wine that is £5 in Tesco.

As some have also said on here, you'll pay £4.70 for a guinness at Chelts, so having a pop if bookie prices aren't quite in line with what you get in a 100% market does seem a bit rich.

The moment you leave the door you know you are paying for travel, entrance, food, drink and bets.  If you don't fancy it, then don't go - or go less, but ultimately it's a pretty boring life if you just stay indoors all the time.  The books have plenty of expenses to match to even get level.  Why shouldn't they be allowed to have a go at making a profit as much as any other service on course?

Its the off course bookmakers that are killing the on course ones, this is the only relevant comparison as both pay out cash.

There is a difference in that the concessions given are for small stakes, historically the bigger punter went racing for that's where the big layers were, also the big layers went the lower prices because they bet in size.

The standard each way terms are traditional and standard which is why they should be sacrosanct,if the bookmakers feel they are betting over broke adjust your prices accordingly, the reduction of place terms looks like sleight of hand.

I have to agree punters never have had it so good,we see all races and I remember the dreaded days of betting tax.

Report swift-tuttle November 18, 2013 12:29 PM GMT
TheVis is correct imo

there is no point arguing about this, if you know where to get better value than on-course than just do it if you want to

some punters want to back on-course with the books because it's part of the package. I don't think books should have to continually justify the prices or terms on their boards, obviously they are trying to make a profit. No one is forcing punters to bet on-course
Report unbiased November 18, 2013 12:36 PM GMT
The retail high street shops(non betting),and out of town,as high streets are decaying, work on a far bigger mark-up on cost than they did 10,15,20 years ago,due to continually rising overheads. So now shoppers get far worse value than they did did those days of yesteryear. It is a shame, but that is how it is in many walks of life.
