Would be interested to hear how people go about recording their bets and what analysis they use to evaluate and improve their strategies? I personally list all bets in excel and can charter P&L weekly, monthly and annually in tabular form and graphically. I then also break this down further into looking at profitability of different race types, distances, courses etc... Been doing this for a few years and interesting to look at trends. I do consistently well in august-november but desperate in march and april (start of flat).

Does anyone take a similar (or different) approach, how do you go about it and what do you find?

Excel Spreadsheet as the main database then use Pivot Tables to analyse results by Age, Race Type, Days LTO, Weight,Class and any other fields you may have. Much easier to see information using these.

i use index card for each race i have a bet in and find im most profitable like everyone else probably in july and august when form has settled down. though in recent years the inclement weather has been playing hell like york this year.

I record all bets manually in a hard cover book, update each evening, and at the end of each week and month,do an analysis.

It takes time but is invaluable to me.

I just use sheets of A4,record the venue and whether flat or NH.Review it but don't make much of an effort to analyse it.

I don't go into too much detail but record every bet to a points stake in my betting book. 1 point = £10.

I keep a running total every month so I know exactly where I am every day with regard  to profit or loss.

August position to date +39 points, worst position -38 best plus 70.

Helped me to identify loss areas, don't back on Irish, summer jumps, and most all weather now.

I am retired and like a bet everyday, I have a decent income and a few quid in the bank. I think keeping a running P&L makes you more careful in your approach and stops any chasing. Works for me.

I let betfair record my P+L for me as I barely have any bets anywhere else but on this site. I don't analyse the results too much, but I am pretty good at sussing out what is working and tweaking my methodology if it needs it.

You can generate reports and customise them

You are better not keeping records for when one see`s what one has lost during the year or lifetime it will only depress you. Oh, I forgot, everybody wins on here. Whoops

I don't keep records, I like to kid myself that I break even on the whole.
Report judorick • August 31, 2013 12:00 PM BST
I did this for two years (in 2002/2003) and it proved extremely useful, finding out things like I make profits in 2yo maidens but not 3yos, handicaps for 4yos+ but not 3yo only and various other categories. Really helped my backing side of things

I bet much less these days than back then (major festivals only) and I put all the bets on Excel spreadsheet and have a good look every few months at the trends, filtering for everything I've recorded

simple answer, class 2 and higher handicaps by far my most profitable medium for punting

I use MySQL and Java to store each horse result since 2009.  I use a JSP page to filter and display the results to view them based on the various racing variables, and maintain a record of systems.

wipeout my records are very similar to yours however i don't analyse courses...i do however analyse field sizes and starting price ranges for all my backing systems.
