Good evening.
God those Vegas Slots are tempting. Much better than Top Slots and Super Slots. Any suggestion that some idiot gets £75k a year for renaming the same product occasionally is of course a gross libel on a hard-working professional. ![]() |

From what I think you've said sparrow, and apologies if I am wrong,I imagine you are old enough to remember like I do the days before the centralised handicap, when retired Colonels and the like used to do the handicapping at a few courses each. They were interesting then.
By:
You are not wrong there salmon. I do remember the individual handicappers, but I preferred the system before this narrow banding that occurs now. Far too many handicappers having to run out of the handicap now. why 46-60 rather than 0-60?
By:
I agree. I remember Trelawney carrying 10-0 to win the Ascot Stakes and there were quite a few running off 7-0. Part of it was to get supposedly more competitive racing which has worked in the sense that people like me find most flat handicaps unfathomable and boring. At some stage the dreaded health and safety rules kicked in which means that to protect jockeys from self-imposed malnutrition the minimum weights keep going up.
By:
I appreciate the minimum weight argument to some extent, although I can't why a horse could not run with 7-7 if a jockey was available. Even so if a top weight of 10-0 was running off 60 that would allow a horse off 32 to run. We have so many horses rated 45 all having to carry overweight now let alone those rated below. It deprives many lightweight jockeys of mounts as trainers use claimers to make the correct weights.
