Retaining personal data (Principle 5)

This section answers some common questions about how long personal data should be kept. It sets out briefly the duties of organisations in this regard, and gives examples of good practice in managing the retention of personal data.
In brief – what does the Data Protection Act say about keeping personal data?

The Act does not set out any specific minimum or maximum periods for retaining personal data. Instead, it says that:

Personal data processed for any purpose or purposes shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose or those purposes.

This is the fifth data protection principle. In practice, it means that you will need to:

    review the length of time you keep personal data;
    consider the purpose or purposes you hold the information for in deciding whether (and for how long) to retain it;
    securely delete information that is no longer needed for this purpose or these purposes; and
update, archive or securely delete information if it goes out of date.

I'm genuinely interested in why they would

or alternatively put some past bets up with bookies and then we can compare prices with Betfair SP

Swift Tuttle, if you want to bet at early prices, instead of where the market is mature close to the off, the value is virtually never on here, it's always with the bookmakers...

I've never seen any evidence

Report swift-tuttle August 6, 2013 1:38 PM BST
do you have to steer clear of some shops that you've used before?
Report GandalfTheGrey August 6, 2013 2:14 PM BST
Swift, here in Ireland there's no problem getting on (FOBT's non existant), if I have a run of wins from the same shop, I will use a different shop for a bit before maybe returning to the original shop, 2 reasons really, staff don't get a full picture of my betting and if or when I do return, they are glad to see you back as they tend to not realise that you've been elsewhere and think to themselves "was only a matter of time before he returns to give us back our losses" and are even more eager to take your bet.

Anyway, like I said it's not really a problem getting on anyway, Boyles are a bit ropey, to say the least, but in my local shop they're not too bad when you are known, anyway there's enough within walking distance to get on without any hassle to €100 units if you really want to bet in Boyles shops to early prices, online they are a bunch of counts, will take the bet online at SP if you are willing to let them have the arb.

Shop advantages outweigh backing on here by a country mile as outlined above by Kavvie, though I backed this years Grand National winner with Ladbrokes @ 80/1 to €50 e/w in the morning, don't know what price it was on here, probably massive, but those type of winners are few and far between, I always protect my stake and for a decent bet, shops e/w with guaranteed prices, is a no brainer.

I have worked at private bookies mainly but had stints at billys and okcorales, all punters betting over £50 singles are monitored when they start to lose the company money they are limited to SP only or refused point blank.
Remember when i worked in manchester city central one punter put £60 on every single bookies in the town centre (circa 23 of em) on some balinrobe 20-1 shot and it hosed in.
Next day his picture was up behind the counter.

Gandalf the winner was returned at 165/1 on here and if those are the bets you are having in shops you are either
a) Lying your ass off
b) A mug who has or is in the process of doing his chips

If those are your types of bets you can belt away online as no one will close your account I assure you
Report GandalfTheGrey August 6, 2013 6:04 PM BST
And Lustrumm is the first seether to reply and also apparently a bit of an idiot, he can't fathom how someone can have €50 e/w on the Grand National winner at 80/1 and be happy with that, a small interest bet for me actually, regardless of what price it was on here.

I had a grand at 3/1 on Great White Eagle yesterday, I had a pony e/w at 12/1 on Guest Book today, both in shops. Yes I'm a mug.

As to being a liar, a mug or in the process of "doing my chips" as you say, I can assure you that after nearly 40 years backing horses and with detailed records kept, I am none of those.

Now you enjoy the rest of your day and I hope you are (one day) as successful as me, a good start would be to get rid of the green eyed monster that's within you, it's not going to do you any good, seething over the success of others, will only eat you up. Be Lucky sunshine.

ONLY way to win is to obtain VALUE.

Value is often there with prices available with bookmakers the NIGHT BEFORE, albeit sometimes to restricted stakes.

Pennies available on here night before with the same horse.

When market has sorted itself out on here next morning with reasonable liquidity, most of value has gone.
Report kavvie August 8, 2013 10:28 AM BST
dunerunner you couldnt be morewrong.you wouldnt get any more than a tenner the night before.all your doing is telling the bookies whats fancied.it would be great if there were no prices til 11am evert day.then the traders would have to do their job.not be "buying" fancies for a few quid the night before.
Report swift-tuttle August 8, 2013 10:51 AM BST
I think the value may well be on here

e.g. the following scenario - Pricewise tips a horse and advises a price say 20/1

regardless of the state of the market on here, you put in a request to back the horse at say 24.0 (to take account of commission and just to be better than Pricewise) and, important this, you set the KEEP option

obviously if the horse loses, you get your desired price and you lose your money;
if the horse wins - 2 paths
a) you don't get your price but you haven't lost any money
b) you get your price and you are happy
