I cannot understand why this trainer sends out so much rubbish day in day out the horses are all over raced. The strike rate is disgusting back in the day Johnston used to be the punters friend.this time of the year he would have around a 30 percent strike rate now days he is the bookies friend not the punters. leave this trainer alone this season he wont be able to turn his strike rate around now its too late. My tip for trainers too stick too with good strike rates are as follows. C Appleby. Bin Suroor. J Gosden. J Noseda. Lady Cecil. R Charlton these trainers don't send out horses every day unlike Johnston ten a day. There strike rates are excellent and they want to win races they enter not just run them. Makes you wonder how a trainer can afford to send out 80 horses all over the country and win 4 races and be able to afford the expenses ? .

Think you are overlooking the fact that the trainer himself does not foot the bill, that is what the owner is for...!
Report trendzboys August 6, 2013 9:01 AM BST
You mean owners as he has more than one well his statistics are embarrassing and if I was looking for a new trainer for my horse I would avoid him like the plague. too many slow starts and refusals for my liking.
Report Cork Langer August 6, 2013 9:08 AM BST
Doubt he will worry himself about attracting new owners for a while, his yard(s) are full even with plenty farmed out on either the injury list or easy list.
Report trendzboys August 6, 2013 9:13 AM BST
Well if I was sheik mohammed or the owner of universal I would have my horses as far away from there as possible. he moans that if there any good he loses them as three or four year olds to godolphin. so does he deliberately not get out the best in them Galician should have gone to godolphin don't know how he kept that this year probably from carving it up last year.
Report Slim Pickens August 6, 2013 9:14 AM BST
the other thing to heed is tht a lot of these horses have only2/3 yr olds have usually been elsewhere, how many 2nds and 3rds in this is a bigger pointer than winners to the always trying claim
Report trendzboys August 6, 2013 9:21 AM BST
2nds and 3rds is a bigger pointer than winners what does that mean it just means they are not trying. a top flight trainer does not send out ten horses a day and have no winners something is wrong with the stable obviously you keep following him if you think you will make a profit backing his horses dream on that's what the bookies want. you should be laying not playing my friend.
Report Cork Langer August 6, 2013 9:27 AM BST
They have the option to move their horses, but have chosen not to, so would that not imply that they themselves are happy with his methods...?
As for strike rate, irrespective of how many runners he has had over a season, his average has stayed consistently between 14 & 18% and for 20 consecutive years he has trained a 100 or more winners a season.
Love him or loathe him, the figures speak for themselves, biggest problem for punters is knowing which of his runners to back and which to leave, again the figures don't lie and his p/l to level stake says laying his horses has been profitable in 19 of the last 20 seasons.
Report trendzboys August 6, 2013 9:35 AM BST
Thanks for the info Cork langer you certainly know your stuff. its definitely a lottery backing his horses he will probably have six winners today who knows?

If you make money out of Johnston's you are just plain lucky, rather like those who claim to make money betting in 20+ runner cavalry charges. I suspect what is won will sooner or later just be given back.

Media have really been banging on about his recent 'purple patch' but they conveniently fail to mention who has also trained the most losers during the same period.

Wee eck I think he has his 'camera face' for Channel 4 and the like but I don't think he has deviated from your original description.

It's not a case of liking or disliking him, he is a talented trainer of horses, that is not in question, but being able to make a profit from his runners is the exception rather than the rule for the vast majority, unless laying all his runners.

Not sure where you are getting your data from roadrunner.

Mark Johnston 2013 calendar year. UK flat only. both show losses equivalent to about 23% of stake (AW 24% and Turf 22%). The £ value of those losses is about £214 on stakes on £896.
All assuming the RP has his records correct.

iIf you read between the lines I am not sure the Establishment are too fond of MJ, he is certainly fairly outspoken, I think i he puts a foot wrong they would be down on him v quickly,, been innuendo for years about his vet skills with a syringe, feck all ever proved.

I dont follow his horses in general but i do watch his stable tour and keep an eye on his fancies, in general i think he targets the big money handicaps at goodwood and ascot wif the run of the mill stuff, he has always stated that his aim each season is to get as far up the trainers table as possible.

I never back or lay his favourites though cant usually get to grips with them.

Not sure about the 'establishment' not liking him. The media never challenge his opinion on anything and the BHA will no doubt be very pleased that he 'helps' punters money stay in the game.

He occasionally used to get challenged on his forum and the usual response was for him to lose his rag. It really was a case of his opinion, like it or lump it.
