Haven't you just answered your own point for the exact reason why he didn't kick on from 2 and a half out?

If Hughes was so certain she would stay then on a course where runners often find trouble when coming from behind, why didn't he bounce her out of the stalls and make all then? My guess is that he hoped and felt she would stay but still knew he had to ride her in the best possible way to try to ensure that she did.

Hughes is pathetic , he is not even man enough to accept the **** ride he gave Sky Lantern - the bloke is a jerk. If he accepted he made a bad ride I would have a bit more respect for him but he is to proud of himself to admit it. Reminds me of **** Tom Q when he nearly lost Frankel his unbeaten record by riding two finishes at Royal Ascot in 2011. He panicked when the pacemaker went clear but yet again he was not man enough to accept he balls it up. It was only Frankel's supreme brilliance that won him the race.
Report ima_mazed66 August 3, 2013 6:17 PM BST
So obviously if he's on a hold up horse trying 10f for the first time flyingbolt he's still going to ride it the best way he feels to ensure she got 10f which was my exact point.

Just because he felt she would get the trip doesn't mean she would, so my point was in response to the person saying Hughes could have sent her on 2 and a half furlongs out when that was always going to be very unlikely considering she's a hold up horse running farther than she ever has before. She wasn't even hitting the front from that far out in her mile races let alone a 10f one.

You pointed out what Hughes had said in his column and that's fair enough but he still didn't know for sure if she would stay and so rode her accordingly, which didn't include kicking for home from a long way out.

When you say you don't think anyone is suggesting he should "kicked for home a long way out" you mean you didn't say that and that's fair enough but you would be wrong in saying you don't think anyone is saying that because that's exactly what I was responding to where someone did actually say that and even mentioned 2.5 furlongs as where he could have kicked on from.

If you scroll up to my post at 17:27  I've actually quoted it being said and then responded to it but appreciate it's not always realistic to read everything in a thread.

Report ima_mazed66 August 3, 2013 7:25 PM BST
I have only seen the race once so wouldn't like to comment for sure but it looked to me on a one time watch as the only reason he wasn't able to hold his position was because of Buick knocking him back inside, unless you mean at an earlier point in the race but again I can't really comment until I see it again.

Horses do NOT beat standard on good ground. It was good/firm on Friday whatever Seamus Buckley,Richard Hughes or Uncle Tom Cobley says.

I accept it may have been even firmer at Ascot and Sandown. However at Ascot he was given an impossible task sat out the back and seemingly totally unsure which part of the track to race on.When he finally made up his mind and got some daylight the horse flew home. He didn't seem to be feeling the ground in the last furlong.Mischief

At Sandown he did the opposite, chasing the horse along to try and negate an outside draw and raced too close to the lead which did not suit the horse. On Friday he gave him the perfect ride and it was a pleasure to watch. In his other 3 runs this season he has given him absolute stinkers.Indeed there is a case that this horse should be unbeaten this season.

With respect I'd accept the judgement of the jockey, rather than a poster tbh. I backed wentworth at Sandown
even though he was badly drawn, got stuck into him early from draw, and firm the ground obviously didn't help
the horse, as for your "he won on it" they will often go on it once, against weaker opposition, but they remember
when they don't like it, I can tell you that.

As for Hughes, he is without doubt the best jock riding today, 8 wins at goodwood, all ridden with supreme confidence.
He is the first since LP, to ride em like that. He cant get them all right, with they way they are ridden. Can't win
on all of them, especially at places like Goowood.

Most of Hannon's are ridden like that, and he rides them for the most part, exquisitely, and it's a pleasure to watch
with or without a financial investment. If you want one beaten UP, well that not what he's about.

As for NinjagoSad, wasn't good enough, he's always ridden like that, again I backed it behind Moviesta at NM, he really needs
a stiff 6 off a really fast pace, Goodwood , in my opinion not his type of track.

So your latest attempt, after the laughable 8 out of 10 hoses have gaps open for them at GOODWOOD or that a horse can only be stopped from getting a run by more than 3 horses,to justify Hughes ride.Is that Hughes deliberately steered SL in behind other horse close home because he wanted cover. So he was prepared to take a major risk of losing a gr 1 race to get cover for a horse that has never shown it needs cover. Not logical is it Gabby. Some horses need cover to run their best races most don't,so its best on those horses not to go into areas where a clear run is unlikely.

Once you have finished wringing out your hank Tonto i will precede.........ready?

Sky Lantern was attempting 10f for the very first time, covering her up to attack at the furlong pole would have been the plan. Taking her wide may have lit her up too early. Of course it`s a game of chance and Buick ragging his horse about all over the shop was decisive to keep SL from having a clear run.

Your duality thought process keeps it simple but only a simpleton would ignore other situations during a horse race. Have you ever ridden a horse??
Report doantwin2easy August 4, 2013 11:25 PM BST
I think there are some fair points on both sides. In my opinion the horse had a run on the outside. Hughes took a pull and got some cover to make sure she didn't go too early over the trip - that ultimately cost her as the run she had on the outside evaporated.

I think, granted a clear run, she would have scrambled home with a burst of speed between the 2 and 1. Certainly travelling better than the winner as she tried to squeeze into the gap. The horse has speed. We all know she is not an out and out galloper, so she was never gonna get home after meeting that kind of trouble.

As for the ground, I honestly don't think it was fast enough for her, especially over the trip. She wants it rattling and a fast time won't convince me that the ground didn't have a bit of cut, or at the very least dead patches.
Report Angel Gabrial August 4, 2013 11:40 PM BST
doantwintoeasy

Well put. Horses that are produced for a burst of speed especially over an extended trip need cover, they don`t want to be seeing daylight over 3 furlongs from home. There is luck involved by keeping them covered up until between the 1&2 pole but this is the pre race thought process rather than keeping them wide away from trouble. It`s all about saving them and taking your chances, sure punters feel mugged there is always a bigger picture.

So a horse that you may have doubts about staying(none were expressed by connections, infact the opposite)the plan was to keep asking it to decelerate and quicken again. The surest way to tire a horse. The best way to keep a horse from tiring,is to allow it to run at a smooth and uninterrupted pace, then to quicken. So did this cunning plan work to steer SL in behind and then have to keep snatching up,did that help the horse stay the extra 2 furlongs.Would you advise Hughes to do the same again if the race was re run?
Report toronto44 August 4, 2013 11:53 PM BST

actually Toronto I think you have a valid point and I think the jockey made a mistake. That's why I agree with both of you.

I can see the thinking behind what RH did. I think they thought she would get the trip, but not if they had to expend too much energy too early. She was ridden for one final burst of speed. We see the risks of not doing that all the time. Horse hits the front too early and gets done by a stronger stayer. Personally I think he should have ensured the passage towards the outside. Which was what he had done to such good effect at Ascot.

I also think that if you look at the passage Hughes took on Pethers Moon, he was at pains to keep it as near the inside as possible, a tactic he seemed to think paid dividends on the round course this week (not saying he is wrong).

The surest way to tire SL  was running it into the back of other horses, when it was not necessary.AG so do you think every horse benefits from being covered up?If not why do you think it was a good idea to take this risk of being stopped with SL.

That's the main point D2E SL did not have to be covered up to win,so it was an error to do place it in a position where trouble was very likely.

I'm kinda bored criticising RH now and I have done plenty of it. He is genius and flawed in fairly equal measures, but he showed his vulnerability when interviewed on track a few weeks back, so probably deserves a break.

The frustration is watching someone that you know is incredibly good but, for whatever reason, doesn't always want it.
Report toronto44 August 5, 2013 12:39 AM BST
Agree D2E  Hughes is very good most of the time but as on SL he over complicates too many times. Not sure if its because he likes to show boat or just that he gets himself in bad positions too often.
Report pedrobob August 5, 2013 1:11 AM BST
Why do you suggest 3 horses is a wall? I have never heard of this before

to plenty of jocks, just takes one horse in front of them to create an impenetrable wall..... no, having said that, some jocks don't even need one horse......
Report ima_mazed66 August 5, 2013 3:12 AM BST
I personally think Hughes's problem stemmed from when Johnny's Murtagh's horse drifted towards the inside across the Godolphin runner which caused that one to edge out across Hughes, so was as much the Godolphin runner edging out as it was Hughes going back inside. Whilst he certainly did go inside for a stride or two, I was as a result of what the other horses did ahead of him, yet once the Godolphin runner went a length up on him he then tried to edge out again to make the run some on here are saying he should have all along. That actual run wouldn't have been possible anyway with the Godolphin runner edging out unless Hughes edged out even more, meaning he went even wider, otherwise he would have just run up the arse of the Godolphin horse and have been stopped in his tracks.

Unfortunately for him at just about the time he went inside to avoid the Godolphin runner edging out across him, as he tried to come back out again himself a few strides later, Buick came up on his outer and gave his horse a slap with the whip in his left/wrong hand and pushed Hughes back in again. Even then for a stride or two it looked as if Hughes could still have come between the Godolphin horse and Buick on the winner until they both performed a pincer move on Hughes and squeezed him up, causing him to snatch up and costing him any chance of a place let alone any chance of the win.

Ima

You read the Hughes/Sky Lantern race exactly the ame as me. Sajjhaa and SDS were edging to the outside and SL was probably slightly edging with the pack infront of her so if Hughes was to go wide at that stage he would have had to pull her wide so he nipped her in to take advantage of the cover for a few more strides but by then Buick had come up on the outside cracking his horse with the whip in his left hand resulting in Winsili being problamatic for Hughes.

I just guess was also stook in 2 minds as to wether to muscle SL to the outside or attempt a stylish move and wait for a passage between the front horses. A bad decision or victim of circumstance? Yes he could have reacted quicker but he was still odds on for a gap to appear. Tis racing i`m affraid, especially when they all start rolling about at Goodwood.

can't add much to what has been said about the ride except that I don't think she would have won anyway.

Sky Lantern looked a world beater at Royal Ascot but has subsequently had two unpleasant experiences, clouted on the head by Buick's whip at Newmarket and then squeezed out and buffeted about at Goodwood.

Deserves a break now, bring her back in the Autumn if there's some decent ground.

I hope they keep her in training as 4yo, sure there is more to come from her.

how anyone can compare fallon to him, is just laughableShocked.
Report ima_mazed66 August 11, 2013 7:43 PM BST
Compare their number of jockey title wins and classic winners and then you might understand it's not actually as laughable as you misguidedly think...........and Hughes just for good measure via a couple of family connections has had things a lot easier in the game compared to Fallon too.
Report motley01 August 11, 2013 8:10 PM BST
Fallon was and always will be on dimensional jockey, devoid of class or style in the saddle
a one trick pony type. If you wanted one getting stuck into, he's was your man, no finesse whatsoever
agricultural jock...
Report ima_mazed66 August 11, 2013 9:03 PM BST
Well as long as that one trick is to get his horse over the line before anyone else then I don't think he will get too many complaints.

Not that he was a one trick pony anyway as his rides from off the pace and getting up late with perfect timing have shown on many occasions, as much as his completely different rides when he has set out to make all and judged the pace to perfection and won have also shown.

Meanwhile with a finesse jockey like Spencer, well best of luck backing him looking stylish and and crossing the line in 5th having given the horse far too much to do but at least he looked the part eh? Oh and as far as I'm aware, you don't get paid out any extra on here if your jockey is pleasing to the eye in the saddle.

No but my family come for Galway and I grew up around horses and have worked in a number of stables in the past, although not racing ones and nor have I ever ridden in an actual race.

I've also never driven in a Grand Prix race either but when a driver crashes into the tyre wall I think I can work out something went wrong there, and I'm assuming all gynaecologists must not only be female but mothers too as who else would be qualified to make medical judgements on the female reproductive system? It wasn't that long ago Hughes used to be a laughing stock on here.Stoute did not want him near any of his Abdulla horses and he probably played a big part in getting him sacked.
Fallon is every bit as good as Hughes imo.
