Seems like a lifetime away now that he was standing on his crate calling the odds to the ring wearing his white gloves.
The dinosaurs on here will remember him no doubt.

He pushed one out at Epsom one day and we were all wondering wtf was going on. It won of course.

They did not NEED to all Win, though.

5/2 chances starting 5/1 - and being backed Each Way.

Some of the more ridiculous ones would be 9/4 out to 13/2 - and the like.

That slide went 11/4 to 5/1 in about a minute before the off! I'll be darned if I can remember the name of the horse though.

There used to be about 10 tic tacs working at Catford when I was a regular there.

Charlton a bit before my time Pete. My old trainer was at New Cross in the 60's.
Brixton had a dog track as did Wandsworth. The game is in a right state now. When Walthamstow closed I was done with it and will probably never own a dog again.Sad

I always thought that Pegley was a Bookie, too.

He ended up working on his own didn't he?

Think they worked in tandem - stewarts.

Well - logically, there would HAVE to be more than one, anyway - a few in fact - to get the SP Returned so high.

What i meant was that he ended up running his pitch on his own, no clerk, no footman, no tic-tac, but having said that it could have been Steven Little!Grin

Some of my best sporting memories involve greyhounds. My username is a bit if a clue!
I'd love to have a dog again but it's just not there for me anymore. I hate what Wimbledon has become Cry

Here's my namesake doing the business in 1990. I've watched this a thousand times!

Indeed we do, part of growing up. The main layer John Humphries used to ask me to mark his card. I refused on principle..

Pegley used to bet on the rails, my other half sometimes got involved

in 'putting on' for him, some of the 'knockouts' were so blatant it was

laughable, 2/1 out to 5/1 e/w at S/P Grin

When John Pegley was plying his trade it was a real struggle/virtually impossible to make it pay on the rails so they had to try something but don't forget plenty of those "knock outs" were never sighted, nice bloke though,he sold out as soon as buying and selling came in.

I was at Brighton many years ago for an evening meeting and Pegley had a runner - someone asked him if he thought it would win & he said the only way it would win is if he chased it round the course with a shotgun ! Well he didn't need to as it bolted up !  - happy days Happy

John once tried syndicating a few horses to be trained in France.

The last time I spoke to him he was doing silver plating; re-plating ESPN stuff. Mind you, that was over 15 years ago. Always think of him when I drive to Petworth and see the sign for Kirdford.

The knock out was instigated by Maxie Parker ande the 1st horse they got money out of was at Yarmouth.

Maxie Parker then became the owner of Ladbrokes and when he retired his nephew Cyril Stein became the boss.

The knockout was in operation also at the dogs mainly at Hendon and Hackney Wick where the main operator

was Taxi driver **** Bookmaker named Eddy Selby.  The knockout was costing betting shops so much money

that people who betting shop managers were at it could only back dogs 1st show.  Happy memories.

I just knew you would have known John Pegley Mr.E. I hope you and the family are ok mate. My bro has bought a cracking pub near Box Hill, I'll get Christian to come as well and we'll meet up for a beer one day this Summer. I'd like that.

You could always hear John Pegley shouting the odds in the days when the betting ring was exciting.
I found him quite polite unlike some on the rails and I think he put together his multiple ew offcourse bets with some skill, which he did augmented with the help of a few "knockouts."

ribero, was Pegley the one man band?

When: 22 Jul 13 14:13
John was very easily heard at the races, when shouting his prices he sounded a bit like a headmaster, likeable chap but didnt really fancy embracing the new wave style game as it now.

Cant blame him for that tbh, i liked and got on well with him.

Yes wee eck,a lot of the time, bet down near the bottom of the rail at York.

When: 22 Jul 13 15:47
Pegley was a one man band for some time, shouting the odds more vocally than most and doing his own clerking.

John would actually admit he was trying to ease the price of a horse when I approached him for a wedge. "Leave it a minute, John", he would say "and we'll all get on!"

In his later years on course he would complain that the game was gone and that he wanted out.

wee eck, interesting you mention Maxie Parker, he had a shop in Poland street in the West End where I worked as a trainee settler in the 60s.
I trust you are keeping well.
