not the first time i've seen that sight on an irish racecourse. and the amount of shattered horses you see that fall at the end of races on their desperate heavy going during the winter is shocking

I'm not saying I understand what it costs at any level to run a horse, but it does strike me that on days that UK meetings have one or two races that can scrape the dead-eight, Irish meetings have bum races with 15- 30 odd runners through the card. What happens to these horses ? The vast majority must turn out to be no good.
All this in a country which is effectively skint.

I have just seen the replay of this race and I have to say it was a disgrace and Tipperary racecourse should be utterly ashamed of there selves. they had plenty of time to stop the race and their actions border on barbaric imo. RIP to the poor horse

Prize money in Ireland is vastly superior to that in the UK with the lowest winners purse today ( a maiden hurdle) the equivalent of £4,200. Only 8 out of the 36 races in the UK TODAY WERE WORTH MORE THAN THE LEAST VALUABLE IRISH RACE. . Only one NH race a handicap chase in Worcester was more valuable . Unfortunately for your argument the terrible incident which happened today occurred in the most valuable race held in either IRELAND or the UK that day with a value equivalent to £ 8,134 How can you say that Irish prize money is "crap" when 15 of the 36 UK races today raced for prize money less than £2,000
And by the way the next time you see a 30+ maiden in Ireland I will personally fly you over.

It looks absolutely disgraceful but we dont know the facts however the guy running on the track with the flag was lucky.
It seems obvious to say the race should have been stopped.
It is possible that they didnt have enough time to get someone on the bend which would have been necessary to stop the race. I think if that was the case they should have raced round the horse and taken that hurdle. It's easy to be critical but we don't know the facts, are the hurdle crews in contact with officials, did they have time after the horse went down etc.
Had a day off yesterday so just watched this.It looks absolutely disgraceful but we dont know the facts however the guy running on the track with the flag was lucky. It seems obvious to say the race should have been stopped. It is possible that they d
The poor horse collapsed with a heart attack but did not die immediately.
The flag man was brave and someone you would like on your side
Well said Biscar. The poor horse collapsed with a heart attack but did not die immediately. The flag man was brave and someone you would like on your side
I only caught a glimpse of it last night as I was following the leaders, just watched it again absolutely amazing there wasn't a major pile up and possibly a very badly injured flag man, just imagine the headlines, "major pile up over a stricken horse".
The Tipp management can count themselves very lucky indeed that they got away with it.

Statement from Tipperary re the horse , Let Yourself Go, Tipperary Races Thursday 6th June
Friday, 7 June 2013
In the 8:20pm race at Tipperary Racecourse on Thursday 6th of June, the horse Let Yourself Go was pulled up by his Jockey after two furlongs as he felt that something was not right with the horse.
As the field had another circuit of the track to go, the jockey attempted to guide the horse out of the line of running. Despite this, the horse collapsed on the track while the runners and riders were only three furlongs away, jumping the fourth last hurdle.
Track staff at the second last hurdle followed correct procedure to bypass the hurdle. It was not possible to erect screens in the very short space of time available as it would have compromised the safety of the oncoming runners, riders and members of staff required to hold the screens.
The veterinary staff and connections did everything they could to assist the horse in situ and when it was clear that the horse had died he was quickly and humanely moved off the track.
Tipperary regrets the loss of Let Yourself Go and extends our sincere condolences to all connections. We also deeply regret any distress caused to racegoers and viewers. Please be assured the welfare of all horses and jockeys is of paramount importance at Tipperary Racecourse. This incident will be reviewed in detail to ensure the risks from incidents of this sort are minimised in future.

"the horse collapsed on the track while the runners and riders were only three furlongs away.Track staff at the second last hurdle followed correct procedure to bypass the hurdle"
Not sure it was the correct move to bypass the hurdle as they have in effect forced the field to go nearer the stricken horse imho.
A difficult situation though.

If thats what happened as they say then they really were caught on the hop, trying to stop the race might have caused all sorts of confusion among jockeys?.

So the nonsense on this thread has proven to be just that. They had absolutely no choice because they only had 20 seconds to react. Learn the facts before making judgement .

The horse collapsed and died when they were leading the horse away when the field were jumping the fourth last less than 3 furlong away (i.e. between 20-30 seconds). As I said learn the facts before making judgement.

You have turned "only three furlongs away" (Tipperary statement) into "less than 3 furlong away" and you have backtracked from 20 seconds to 20-30 seconds.... either of which would have been impossible.
The race took 3 mins 52.7 seconds or roughly 14.5 secs per furlong.
Having a different opinion is part of life but telling people to learn the facts when you clearly haven't is out of order.
