Seem to remember Best giving an interview a while back saying he was looking for more 'Saturday' horses and wouldn't be playing the system, lining one up for a touch etc anymore. Seems old habits die hard.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of PLANETOID (IRE), ridden by Mattie Batchelor and trained by Jim Best, which raced in rear throughout, finishing seventh, beaten 111 lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer’s representative. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer, and observations from the Handicapper. The rider stated that his instructions were to try to get his mount to jump well, as PLANETOID (IRE) had so far failed to translate his Flat-race ability to jumping and had fallen on his previous start. He further stated that PLANETOID (IRE) had generally jumped better today but was outpaced, being unsuited by the heavy going. He had considered pulling up in the back straight, but had felt that he might possibly manage to catch up the back-markers who appeared to be slowing. The trainer’s representative confirmed these instructions. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.

The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, PLANETOID (IRE), ridden by A.P. McCoy, and trained by Jim Best, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer who stated that the gelding had problems with his jumping last year and has been given a break in order to re-school him over hurdles. He further added that PLANETOID (IRE) was suited by this quicker ground and running for the first time in a handicap. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of PLANETOID (IRE) could be reviewed. The Stewards ordered the gelding to be routine tested.

After looking at today's racing cards last night and seeing the utter dross that was racing today I decided not to even bother looking at the prices or anything today as I am not having a bet. Can anybody tell me what price Planetoid opened up at generally this morning before it got down to the SP of 5/6??
Is every race below class 3 bent in both flat and jumps racing?? Seems like it!!

From that graph, it looks like an early gamble 4s to evens which stopped as punters realised Mattie was no longer riding.
The only other explanation is they were AP followers who knew about the jockey change in advance but I don't see how that can be the case.

Thanks for that Kenny, very informative. 11/4 in to 11/10 in 40mmins. Between 9am-9:40am. For that kind of gamble to happen in 40 mins is very informative.
Mattie Batchelor's car/dentist was obviously known about long before 2:30pm!!
Suspicious betting pattern indeed, You just don't see them types of betting collapses over such a short period of time. It stinks and as usual the genuine day to day punter is being put away again.
Horse racing a corrupt business or a sport? Don't see how these type of races can be described as a 'Sport'.

Bookmakers have very low limits for punters to get on early in the morning to try and protect themselves some more against stuff like this happening. You don't know how many people in how many different locations at how many different shops they had putting their bets on for them...
Perhaps A LOT of people were in on this and they knew the price was going to collapse regardless so they had to get on early? The only people who know this are Best and his cronies.
Agree with you that it's not very smart though with how obvious they have made it look and the adding of McCoy on top just added the cherry on top. Imagine the outrage that this has caused and times it by 10 if AP was wearing green and gold on top of the horse today

Same betting patterns with Alan Jones, Noel Quinlan & John Butler. The "plot horses" are hammered from first thing. Michael Wigham varies his betting operation, his now drift and are then hammered 3 mins before the off, a much better ploy all round. David Rees & Sophie Leech also use the late switch of jockey (usually to Paul Moloney), then the price collapses, but their bets are already on. What was more significant in today's race was the 3rd ........ keep tabs on it ...... today's result was carved up before they ran. In fact, the 3rd was not meant to get placed and was heavily layed in both the win & place markets ....... Costello not in their good books after that.
Here endeth the first lesson ....

nobody in their right mind could have backed this on previous hurdle form
However If one knew the horse had been re-schooled, was now jumping a lot better, and the trainer had him about right, and taking into account his reasonable flat form, then it was a different story
First time in hcap as well, so a carefully planned coup.
It is possible some shrewdies could have guessed this may happen, not me, otherwise one needed to be in the know
Looks very bad for racing when a horse improves quite this much from previous form. The ordinary punter has little chance. But J Best will probably get away with it.

The BHA are spineless. They will just wait for something big to come out in public again where they are forced to act such as with Al Zarooni...
They moan so much about the image of racing yet they don't have the balls, or actually WANT to do anything to change it.

An 85 horse from the Flat has a few "jogs",runs off the same Mark over Hurdles,is backed off the Boards in the morning and, finally the Champion Jockey is a late "switch". Do you plebs need a a written pre race quote to avoid Laying it?

Be interesting to know how much was bet on this beast Were huge bets placed??? or did the bookies run from this, and it was actually shortened up for little money? the bookies may have sensed a pattern here, and of course its flat form meant it was a potential improver in a hcap for time
If big bets really were wagered I would think there should be a case for a ban here Whatever the horses potential, it hardly warranted started 5/6f on any previous hurdle form
It is the horses 6 "jogs" last year I would not be happy about

How much more positive do you need? The horse was an extremely well layed out plot. The jockey change was the finishing touch. Good luck to them.Anybody who Layed it should be in "Care".

Franky, By all means, stand up to one if you feel it is right to do so. However, this horse was running off the same 85 as its Flat Mark (possible 40 lbs wrong). Do not bleat when you get "caned".

racingstar 05 Jun 13 22:52 It was a "well planned plot", Gery. Have you never heard of one?
even the most well planned plots have some indication of form over similar conditions, usually horses are taken away from these conditions for a good spell to get really competitive and then returned with the accompanying market signal.
this one, the horse couldn't even jump and was always out the back, never remotely put in a race.
well done to them they got their prize today but don't be all condescending about it or act as though these plots never fail, everything has a price, i layed it at evens and was wrong this time, doesn't mean i should back all these plots at near bottom price does it?

I would not blame you edge .. it was a totally ludicrous price on all known hurdles form

yes i dont mind getting it wrong it was obvious it was going to put up a much better performance, i just couldn't have it on the way i'd seen it jump.
i'm wondering whether it was actually schooled much before its 6 hurdles runs to qualify for a mark.
i think its cases like this when a mark shouldn't be given, the horse has just done nothing to be rated on.
i'll know better next time with best that's for sure.
i actually look for my bets mostly on the basis in the low grade hcps that i know they have not been placed recently to do the horse justice but also know that its possible the conditions this day are likely to make it a punt, this is usually because the horse has indicated this, even if it were a year ago.
everything has a price, saying you should be in care for laying at evens is a bit strong, that's all i'm saying to racingstar

If they booked a 10lb claiming lady rider and didnt replace her it would probably have still hacked up and they would've got at least 10 times the odds in the morning.

BTW I said at the start of this thread that I would not be getting involved because of who it was,and because of who it was the race stunk, but it wouldnt have been the first time that one of his that has been heavily backed got beat.

perhaps best should school his horses a bit better in future before they hit the race course
for something to show no aptitude over jumps whatsoever and looking a likely faller in every race to be given a mark at all is utterly wrong.

Below is a rule from the Hong Kong book of regulation stridingedge, maybe the BHA might think of introducing something similar?. "(25) To order that future entries or declarations be not accepted for any horse the performances of which in their opinion have been unduly inconsistent. (26) To penalise any person who, in their opinion, has been responsible for or has been a party to the unduly inconsistent running of any horse"

class 5's and 6's at least would be a thing of the past
don't mind inconsistent horses, can get good prices on these on the lower class stuff.
i just think a horse that has been tailed off every race should not be given a mark, if the trainer has sorted it out from being a complete no hoper he should have to show something on the racecourse before it runs in a hcp.

Silver at least people were aware of Barney - its the sneaky models of society types who annoy me. Some of what goes on is very subtle and I reckon plenty of the big priced winners in races like low quality handicap hurdles are not totally unfancied. Every 50 pound note wins a thousand or more.

The BHA have got rules to cover any scenario, the problem is they have got no guts, they should be able to withdraw a trainers licence when in their opinion the trainer is bringing the game into disrepute.
It wasnt that long ago that a certain horse(forgot the name of it.)ridden by M Goldstein was blatant ridden to get its handicap mark down,Jim Best and Goldstein were called in by the stewards who noted their explanation. The horse was detached for most of the trip ,but then ran on past several backmarkers to finish full of running, the next time it ran Goldstein went off like a scalded cat until tiring badly in the final 1/4 mile, the ride was clearly a pi 44 take at the stewards.
Another race at Brighton,Best had 2 runners, one had been heavily backed in the morning on the exchanges, the other ons drifting,I saw someone I knew had contacts in the yard,he told me they didnt fancy the one that had been heavily backed, but the one that had drifted, the latter bolted with the well backed stable mate well beaten with(guess who on?) yes youve guessed P Doe.

in the lower class races, the horses are mostly very moderate, sorry to state the obvious there. the point is you have trainers trying to win races for owners with poor stock and poor prize money. so they obviously need to place their horses to get weight off when they become unfeasibly treated, you'll see so many each day in hcps that just aren't given their conditions and any sort of poor tactics can enhance their downfall under these conditions.
am constantly looking for these types in hcps

Usually the threat of legal action.

They found the worst race imaginable to try with a stopped horse , not often they dont get given a mark after 5 or 6 runs over timber.
I find it hilarious how clever they think they are really, its completely sickening , apparently they went into a hills shop and tried to have 16k at 5-2, GLWTP.
You cant really have a touch in these bad heats , not from a marked yard like his.
By the time tuppence hapennys gone on at the so called best prices they end up taking evens.

If you trusted them with your money yesterday ....... look up a horse they trained called Saute when it ran at Hereford in 2011 ...... looks a similar pattern .... made no show when 33/1, 100/1, 100/1 & 14/1 on soft/heavy going ....... then 2nd time in a h/cap, going= G-F, including a late change of jockey to AP ........ 2nd time in a h/cap off 93 backed off the boards to 4/6f .... and loses (3rd) !! ......... later that year went on to win 3 h/cap hurdles when rated up to 120........ so had at least a stone in hand when beat (deliberately ?). .....
