One question Bruce ought to be asking himself is whether he is damaging Pricewise by going to the well too often.
It used to be Sir Tom tipped on Saturdays and only at major festivals during the week. Now it is almost every day with Pricewise Extra, Eyecatchers, the Weekender column, and antepost.
Now, one suspects Bruce is partly motivated by the need to justify Sir Tom's epic salary but maybe selections are suffering because Sir Tom no longer has time to mull over the form for three full days after the five day decs before writing Saturday's column on Friday.

I keep stats on a number of tipsters, recording both the early price (available at the time the selection was known to me), and the starting price.
Pricewise Extra tips are broken down to the individual, and 3 of them Tom Segal (1st), Andrew Barr (2nd), and Eddie Fremantle (7th), appear in my top 10 out of seventy 76.
These figures have been put together over quite a long period e.g. 1128 from Segal, 971 Barr, and 240 Eddie Fremmantle. Quite a comprehensive record.
This proves these tipsters are pretty successful at early prices if you can get them. At starting price, forget it.
I'd be happy to include any suggested tipsters to compare, but the facts here prove their success, so lets put a stop to this continuous drivel about these tipsters, which are usually unsubstantiated.

Eddie Fremantle for price wise extra is break even at best the other two are winners but you have to use the years 2009/2010 to get all of those profits. The last 30 months for pwe have been only a very small profit. Why would anyone EVER use SP for any bet.

According to that Pricewise book that the Rancid Post produced earlier in the year, Tom does his selections in about half an hour. There's a section where he details how he operates during the Cheltenham festival. He gets the declarations through about three hours before his publishing deadline, and will the spend about two hours on the phone to the bookmakers. Leaving just an hour to go through the six or seven races for that day. Seriously; I'm not making it up. Claims he tipped Alfie Sherrin just because he though Jonjo's horses were in form & because they usually run well at Cheltenham having probably been targeted there.
So you can forget all this 'mulling over the form for three full days' suggestion. The guy is a guesser, albeit a bloody good one!

Pricewise is well known for being a long term investment tipster.
Figures for this year are as below -
Jan -14 Feb +9.5 March +37 April +54 May -22
Total +64.5
Average of 13 points profit per month which ties in with the last 10 years. He normally makes approx 180 points profit per year but I accept that u can only get about 120 points due to the problems getting on. U need a big bank and big balls. He has had losing runs of 16, 16, 19 and 21 so far this year.

Forgot to mention he has had 145 bets so far which makes a roi of almost 50%. If there is anyone better than that out there, and I am not saying there isn't then please let me know!!!

Leo - I think "instinct tipster" would be a more suitable description than "guesser".
Not a bad approach in my opinion, as the longer you study a race - the more likely you are to come up with the favourite!

@Leo Bovary -- I understand what you are saying, and have read the book. By mulling over, I do not mean he is glued to the formbook but that he has races whirring away in his subconscious. Most of us are familiar with the phenomenon where we get stuck on a problem only to find the result comes to us in the middle of the night or in the shower, after we have stopped thinking about it.
What I think may be happening is that all the new demands on his time stop TS just watching races with a clear head and letting his subconscious do the work.

siralex tells the truth and makes a good profit - it can be done if one has initiative and intelligence.
Others are happier writing uninformed nonsense.

Agreed, I think that is a more suitable description. There is another story in the book where he tells how he tipped a certain horse in a race because he noticed the owner of the horse was also the race sponsor. The horse won.
What I was trying to point out was that people shouldn't be under the illusion (as Ramruna clearly is) that Tom spends hours, and hours studying form to come up with these winners. 'Instinct' sums him up perfectly. Sometimes he gets it wrong (did he not say today that he thought the English 1000 Guineas was a bad race?) but his overall record shows he mostly gets it right.

What is Tom's profit then from the 1128 bets, at advised, and SP?
Each bet is a £10 stake, £5 each way if double figures, the profit is £2,666.81.
I didn't fully answer your question. At starting price you would have lost £229.00.

generally you only have to read the column to know he puts the work in (one way or another).
...although the case he made on p.10 for Hanky Panky today was almost identical to the one made by the bookie rep on p.11 (almost as if they'd had a phone conversation about it!)
that was a woefully weak tip as was Beauty Parlour last week.
I am an admirer but you do get the impression (especially on Sundays) that he's obliged to tip in races he'd prefer to leave alone.
It'll turn for him...probably in time for Royal Ascot.

i think that shows that you have to do everything you can to get the price advised
Absolutely.
Of the 76 tipsters that I keep records on, 36 show profit on early prices. At Starting price, this goes down to only 5.

Who is this fraudy ? I see this name come up frequently, and is usually followed by a series of juvenile comments made by BOTH sides of the argument. It all seems a bit pointless.

wtf, fair play to those five, how many tips have they given to be showing a profit at sp
Actually the five, should be four. I was the fifth one.
The best of the 4 is..........
Andrew Barr 971 tips, profit £514.81
The other 3 are not in the public arena, and may object to their names being used. I can say two are from the OLBG site

thats pretty impressive at sp,does he tip in the racingpost ?
Andrew Barr does the Racing Post Pricewise Extra usually on a Monday or Tuesday, although he seems to have gone awol today, and has been substituted with the lamentable Graeme Rodway, who has tipped a 9/4 shot that was 4/1 last night.

Otherwise, its 971 tips, and 52 points profit. Which is still profit, but far from remarkable.
Yes, it's based on £10 stakes, and I agree it's far from remarkable. Indeed, the point I was eluding to, was that you shouldn't be following tips at starting prices, which are manufactured by the bookmaking industry to their benefit.
We hear of account closures just about every day on here. I'm yet to hear from someone restricted who only bets at starting price. Bookmakers love them.
