when she relaxes and enjoys herself, like doing the swimming at the Olympics, she is bearable
but when she does the ever-so-inclusive-determined-to-be-politically-correct-and-concerned act she makes me wanna vomit
unfortunately the latter accounts for about 99% of her time on TV
ffs she even pulled that act on QI for gawds sake, it was excrutiating

She lives for those moments, imo - she thinks she's so much smarter than the rest of us that it's somehow her duty to educate us all, however condescending it all ends up becoming.
That the 'National Treasure' brigade are still prepared to cheer from the side lines while they are being patronised to within an inch of their lives only goes to show how easily people will jump on any available bandwagon, imo...

@differentdrum -- it is now generally accepted by the muppetts who run broadcasting that the Great British public will only watch documentaries fronted by celebrities (various Dimblebys, Joanna Lumley and so on) rather than actual professors who know wtf they are talking about.
Probably this "stunt casting" has more to do with the way telly works these days. Most programmes are made by small production companies who pitch ideas to the various channels, and it is doubtless easier to get your idea commissioned (or at least considered) if it has an "established name" attached.
The Balding name will also catch the attention of the various television reviewers and previewers for newspapers, magazines and web sites.
So for all these reasons, the answer is yes (sort of).

I still think she should never have been brought on Ch4 racing team.. even though she is not always on...she has destroyed the atmosphere for me

Ebulgery - I was wondering if one of the regulars on here would link the fact than Balding is gay, with the issues raised in a documentary about women's suffrage. I am surprised it is you, and even more surprised that you could be that stupid.

It is her feminism, I object to: She claims to be advancing the cause of women, she wants to stand up for woman's rights.. Well against who exactly?.... well there is only one answer to that men. as a man I find offensive
Being Gay.. homosexual to be exact Well she has sold this across the media.... and unfortunately AD keeps us informed on here it is something I tolerate, but I do want it shoved in my face.. The ridiculous legislation pushed through parliament has not helped
and the atmosphere of Ch4 has changed, for the worse in my opinion
It is not men who oppress women, it is nature, women have babies, men do the hunting and gathering it is genetics, I think we are stupid if we tamper with that

Those thoughts must have been uppermost in the minds of parliament when they granted the vote to women over 30 who met the property ownership criteria.
You are demonstrating that you really are that "stupid".

If you haven't seen it just fast forward to the last 15 minutes. Rest of it is just filler with Balding looking aghast every few minutes as if she had just rediscovered the wheel. Hardly worth using Balding just for the few seconds of pointless chat round the breakfast table - yes Uncle Willie was about amusing as it got.

I have no problem with the bias on here, just the stupid ignorance of the historical importance of this issue and time.
Hope you are well g2d.

you should not make personal attacks on me blackbard..it does not advance your argument
We are living in a society where the media feeds to us daily, women are oppressed by men I see that.. But you see what is happening, women are gradually making society in the way they want it if and when they succeed, society will be on intolerable for men, in fact men might as well castrate themselves now, it is the only way men will be able to tolerate it
40 years ago the world was a better place for men than now, 40 years on I hate to think what it will be like for men
As a man, men have to resist women, if they got any sense
just a personal opinion and surprising yes I have female friend, she is lovely... although she gets her way a lot more I do.

Ebulgery. My "personal attack" consists of stating that your 21.31 paragraph is stupid...
"It is not men who oppress women, it is nature, women have babies, men do the hunting and gathering it is genetics, I think we are stupid if we tamper with that"
For the avoidance of doubt, I regard your statement as irrational per se, and stupid in the context of the subject of this post. For further evidence, I rely entirely on the content of your latest post.

We all know about the history of the Suffragette's, why the need to have Clare Balding's name in the programme title? It's nothing more than self promoting bs.

it is too deep a subject to argue on here Blackbarn..
but really just calling my post stupid, is I think stupid......
you need to have been about 40 years ago to appreciate the difference
As I am older, it really don't affect me know...
but I genuinely feel sorry for young blokes now, although if they are happy I suppose it is ok

The RP did an article on this earlir in the week. They gave a potted history of the achievements of women in UK politics; first woman to take her seat in the House of Commons, first woman cabinet minister, first woman PM etc.
They had no mention of the first woman MP. Did Ms Balding mention Constance Markievicz, the first woman MP?

Ebulgery. Thanks for the reply, I do not use the term "stupid" lightly, and I did explain my rationale. You have said nothing since that dispels my view, and I am not sure that being "old" is a simple defence for your view - I am hardly young at 61.

I actually think it was sensible women did not have the vote myself

Next week : "Clare Balding's Masada" - Clare investigates the Jewish Diaspora and what it means for today's lesbians caught in the crossfire of the ongoing Middle East conflict. Meanwhile, over a mixed grill and cooking sherry, Uncle Willie Huntingdon offers a possible solution to the problems posed by the Arab Spring, much to the dismay of Ian Balding, Andrew Balding, and a Toby Balding lookalike.

Thanks Ebulgery - silly to think you cant have a "lot of argument" on here!. Any basis for this view? Hasn't seemed to have stopped you on other threads.
Your masterpiece "I can say nothing more to you blackbarn, because you are in the wrong" is a great closing line. If I lose an argument in the future, I will definitely use this.

My argument against giving to much power to women: They are seeking to make our world TOO SAFE, this will harm us long term there must always be risk....this is also affecting our politics, adversely
Why are they doing it..now. Because they see men's life as easy (because of technology) they can do it themselves... the pill has freed them from their own job of child bearing In the past where being a men meant fighting in wars using things like sword and axe hacking one another to pieces and when men's work generally involved very long hours of arduous physical labour. The did not really want the job.
There is no right or wrong here. It is simply a power struggle. As a man I am going to stick to men's side
As for Balding...she is a feminist...the worst kind of women in my opinion.. so definitely an enemy.
As for criticism of Balding's private life..well she has sold it across the media for personal publicity and profit.. so it is now in the public domain..so I have the right to criticise it. Had she kept it private I would not have

Absolutely on the money, though in Clare's mind, no one would know anything about the Suffragettes until she was good enough to 'educate' them...

If you are going to get Clare to do it the why not add her name. It wouldn't put me off and may encourage others. It wasn't a scam or hype and I genuinely found it interesting. I was put off by the gasps of surprise though. She obviously knew what was coming and that did come over as being rather stage managed.

I don`t doubt for one minute brigust, that by adding her name to the title drew in many extra viewers.
The Mighty Mac, I would suggest it would also put off a lot of people who don't enjoy being patronised, lectured and condescended to by some jumped up, silver spooned, Home Counties elitist with not even one foot in the real world...

I was a fan of Claire Balding when she got Don't Cry into 4th place in a 17 runner handicap at Newcastle on 2/11/93. I backed it EW at 66/1. The horse carried 7-3!!! She does a lot of TV presenting, apparently.

The programme was interesting and thought-provoking, especially the enhanced footage from the camera angles.
However, the language was a bit clunky in places (the Derby was not, "stopped in its tracks," and it would be more natural to say Davison "ducked" or "slipped herself" rather than "climbed" under the rail, to take two examples from the introduction. Balding is an English graduate and a professional journalist, so it is hardly unreasonable to expect more care to be taken with her words.
More irritating was the hackneyed device of presenter on a journey of discovery from initial ignorance to final revelation, but the telly professionals think that is what we need.
The experts Clare interviewed were informative but some non-experts were a waste of footage. The woman who suggested the return ticket might have been the only ticket on sale, for instance: find out; research; don't guess.
The programme seemed slightly padded but also, paradoxically, rushed. The final conclusions -- that Davison was carefully positioned to pick out the King's horse, Anmer, to which she intended to attach a "Votes for Women" scarf, at a point on the course in full view of the newsreel cameras, but was crushed when the horse tried to jump her and fell -- were packed into the last few minutes because so much time had been wasted earlier.

Not a terrible programme by any stretch, slickly produced and mildly informative. But it was also another example of how acutely the celebrity virus has infected modern television production, where the topic under investigation often becomes subsumed by the ego of the person presenting it. In the old days presenters tried their best to meld into the background, they'd have made a show like this without having to show Clare Balding on screen at all, although that in fairness would have left about 20 minutes of screen time.
NOt sure whether i'd blame the programme makers entirely for that though, if you're going to tv executives with plans for expensive shows, unless you have a celebrity on board to drive it, i doubt they'd show any interest. That, for better or worse, is the world we live in nowadays.
Seemed to me that Balding spent at least half the show presenting her own credentials and informing us of the incredible revelations about to unfold and, inevitably, it felt a bit short-changing and anti-climactic in the end

I don't necessarily agree with Gent. I think Clare gave the whole programme some credibility. Similarly had they used any other top racing professional it would have been the same. However top female racing professionals are a bit thin on the ground. Plus being of a prominent horse racing background closely related to both the gentry and the Derby mean't it wasn't just some bland presenter handing out facts. It could have been done better but that side of it I completely agree with.

Just read on digi text today. Shops who sell magazines showing naked and semi naked images of women could face legal action, as requiring staff to handle them could amount to sexual discrimination or discrimination, so no more girly magazines.
One day men will sincerely regret they ever gave women the vote.
Balding, a feminist, definitely the enemy here.
and she looks like an 'old boot' I cant see the attraction myself
men are being far too 'fair and noble for their own good'
just a personal opinion

Fortunately i was unaware this programme was being aired on the television.
Therefore my ignorance regarding this debate as to whether Miss Balding enhanced, enlightened, assisted or butchered the essence of the programme is one of a non viewer. However due to the forceful, large scoping patronising manner of Miss Balding`s technique in front of the camera, perhaps my perception of what i would have observed as a viewer still holds much in common with an actual viewer.

Co-incidentally, her brother trains for the Queen, her uncle is a Lord, and her mother has 'the honourable' prefix at the beginning of her name...
