A PEST pensioner who has harassed his neighbours for over a decade has vowed his campaign of hate is over.
John Bushell was given a restraining order in 1998 banning him from contacting his next-door neighbours Kenneth and Marjorie Mills after he was convicted of pestering them.
The 87-year-old, of Mill Crescent, Hebburn, has breached the order nine times – resulting in four convictions – and earlier this year was given a suspended prison sentence after admitting to making false claims that Mr and Mrs Mills had damaged his home.
Yesterday the former bookmaker was at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court to be sentenced for his latest breach of the restraining order, which saw him hurl abuse at the couple and call them “scumbags”.
He was found guilty of committing the crime after a trial at the court in December last year but his sentence was deferred to see if he could keep the peace.
In the meantime, he was given the suspended sentence at Newcastle Crown Court where he admitted wasting police time by claiming Mr and Mrs Mills had broken the guttering on his home.
Taking that into account, magistrates gave him a nine-month community order and ordered him to pay £250 costs.
After the case, Bushell, known as Jackie to friends, said he wouldn’t be bothering his neighbours any more.
The pensioner, who was jailed in 2001 for breaching the restraining order, said: “I’ve had enough. I still say I’ve not done anything to them, but I’m certainly not going to do anything now.
“I’m 87 and I’ve had a terrible life through all of this – enough is enough.”
His neighbours said they hoped that this time, his promise would be kept.
Mrs Mills said: “This has been so stressful that I hope this is the end of it.
“I’ve got to have a heart by-pass later this year, I’m sure it is because of the strain I’ve been under.
“But now I’m getting on with my life. We still see him but unless he does something really bad I’ll just let him get on with it.
“The summer is coming up and I just pray that we can go into the garden without getting any abuse.”
John McGlone, prosecuting, told the court that the latest breach of the restraining order happened on May 7 last year.
He said: “Bushell was sweeping the street outside their homes and shouted at the couple, calling them scumbags and saying their home was a midden.
“Mrs Mills was filming the exchange and called police.”
Christopher Brown, defending, said: “It has been almost a year to the day since this incident happened and he has adhered to the order and the terms of the deferred sentence since then.”
