Much as I would like to blame Thatcher and her successors wildman football hooliganism was certainly prevalent in the late 60s. I remember going to see Sheffield Wed play Manure in 67 I think and there was considerable trouble then. The Man U fans in those days had as bad a reputation as anybody. It wasn't known in most places before that but I suspect it may have been endemic in odd places such as Millwall, and possibly Glasgow ?

Football violence is a phenomenon of the seventies and coincided with your entry into Europe,I would love to blame Europe too but accept that's stretching it.

It started to my knowledge before we entered Europe. As I said the Man U fans had a terrible reputation in the late 60s. I agree the 70s was probably the peak but I can't see the link between entry into Europe and football violence.

The scenes over the weekend were terrible but the hooliganism of 60's and 70's was much worse.  I can remember myself and some friends being pelted with rocks after Liverpool's game at Manchester City in 1969.  We were lucky to get back to our coach in one piece.

They should all be dropped into iraq on a one way ticket. Some serious wrong uns about, win or lose you should conduct yourselves in the correct way.

wildmanfromborneo i would be more inclined to agree with you except for one thing , the vast majority of the everyday common or garden football thug is usually around the 40's to 50's age , shaved head ( going bald ) and in all likelihood has a job , mortgage paid for or nearly paid for and has got grandkids which when he takes them out with the wife  look the perfect Granny/Grandad couple.

In all probability he also lives in a nice street and keeps his garden tidy and gets on with his neighbours.

Come Saturday and the leash is untied from his waist and he is 'One of the Lads' again , gets the booze down him and pretends it's 1972 all over again.
