Changes in technology have made betting a 'public good'.

By this I mean a service like a utility e.g. water or clean air. A public good is something from which it is impossible to exclude people--as it is from the prices on an exchange, will naturally find their efficient level.

In twenty years we will effectively have a Chinese govt. monopoly, plus bookies that take their prices from the monopoly exchange and add a bit, just like the High St. shops now.

Betfair Press Release.

Press speculation and announcement by CVC Capital Partners15/04/2013
The Board of Betfair Group plc (“Betfair”) notes the press comment over the weekend and the announcement this morning by CVC Capital Partners that they are considering making an offer for Betfair.

There can be no certainty that an offer will be made or as to the terms on which any offer might be made. In the meantime, shareholders are strongly advised to take no action.

Gerald Corbett, Chairman of Betfair, said:
“With our new team now in place and the announcement of a more focused strategy in December, I believe Betfair is currently going through one of the most exciting phases in its development.

Our management team is actively implementing the new business plan for the company and we remain fully committed to delivering on the new strategy and providing improved returns for our shareholders.”

A further announcement will be made as and when appropriate.

That sounds like very bad news for Betfair's already shafted customers.

800+ million GBP is a snip for a company that has a huge world market lead and also on-line betting

and server technological pole position for betting at its newest and most popular form and given that a few

recent obstacles in international regulations and acceptance of such a new form of betting have caused

a few raised eyebrows, the future potential of this betting medium globally are huge as the Internet has

not yet matured either in global business traffic volumes or cultural and political integration.

Would be great if someone would buy this shower and go back to the principles that made it what it was a few years ago. A proper betting exchange with the owners taking between 2-5 % from each transaction. Not worried about satisfying shareholders in the short term and turning into another Pa d d y P o w e r and shafting its customers along the way. What this shower forget is that without those that are now being royally shafted on a weekly basis Bet unfair would not have got where it is today .

We can only dream and for what it's worth i think someone can turn it around and go back to being different, exciting and flourishing as a unique product which really p iss es off the traditional bookies.
Report Johnny The Guesser April 16, 2013 8:07 AM BST
"not worried about satisfying shareholders" Laugh

Why should a company with a monopoly give its product away?

- that would be business suicide.

This is the real world not some betting fantasy land.
Report DOUBLED April 16, 2013 9:43 AM BST
JTG - they are well on the road to business suicide as the product is stagnant

It took Betfair a few years to work it out, but growing the business is about maximising profits not just increasing matched bets.

"Oh the profits have not grown - it must be down to the premium charge!!" - Not even school boy economists would reach that conclusion.

A business charging premium prices to the customers that need their products the most is hardly earth shattering stuff. Just common sense.

IMO without the premium charge Purple would have given up the ghost a while back.  Only time will tell whether it made good business sense to keep your only rival in the game.

imo Purple's strategy was justified when Laddies bought them
