Kieren Fallon received a barrage of criticism on Monday from the owner of Little Mike, the American horse set to line-up in the Dubai Duty Free at the Dubai course on Saturday.

The Irish rider partnered Little Mike to finish eighth to Hunter’s Light in the concluding round of the Al Maktoum Challenge two week’s ago, for which he was sent off at 9-2.

Fallon has been replaced for ride in the nine-furlong Group One contest by Gary Stevens, the Hall Of Fame jockey, who recently returned to the saddle after a seven-year spell in retirement.

“Fallon is a great friend of mine but his style of riding did not suit Little Mike,” Carlo Vaccarezza said at Meydan. “The way he was bouncing on Little Mike in that race, he got him confused.

“Little Mike is not a horse that likes to be rushed, pulled, and rushed again. You’ve got to let him go, and that’s it.

“I don’t think Kieren was well informed or well prepared to ride him that day.”

If Fallon’s services are not required by Vaccarezza, Fawzi Nass, trainer of Krypton Factor, values the jockey’s skills highly.

Krypton Factor warmed up for a defence of his Dubai Golden Shaheen crown on Monday morning by breaking from the gate with a lead horse to work over seven furlongs on the Tapeta surface under the guidance of Fallon.

Krypton Factor put in a lacklustre effort on the same Super Saturday card as Little Mike when four lengths second to Reynaldothewizard in the Mahab Al Shimaal over the same six-furlong trip as Saturday’s race.

It was the fourteenth race in succession that Fallon had ridden the horse, who was purchased out of Sir Mark Prescott’s yard for 100,000gns in 2010.

The five-year-old gelding was found to have sustained a bruised foot during the race, however, and missed work for five days.

“I was disappointed immediately after the race but was relieved to find an explanation for why he ran so flat,” Nass said.

“For a sprinter he’s so laid back, and he doesn’t use himself much without jumping from the stalls.”

Krypton Factor denied Rocket Man back-to-back victories in the $US 2 million contest last season following a heroic effort by the defending champion, who posted a record sectional time over 800 metres before going down by two and a quarter lengths.

It capped a season in which he had run four times at Meydan, whereas this year the Golden Shaheen will be only his third start.

“He’s a straightforward horse, but it’s important to have someone riding who knows him, and there is nobody better than Kieren,” Nass added.

“It’s a tougher race than last year, when there was only one serious rival, Rocket Man, so I’m hopeful rather than confident.”
